Xi very much models himself along the lines of Mao. He calls himself the "Helmsman" and has revived wearing the Zhongshan suit. He pushed through the elimination of term limits and age limits for members of the Standing Committee of the Central Politburo. Party members now have to attend monthly indoc sessions, which annoys the daylights out of most party members who for the most part are business owners who joined the CCP to advance their business interests and to network.

The Cultural Revolution pt II?

I wonder how long it will be before the same "officers" knock on the doors at South China Morning Post?

Xi is doing the same in the rest of China. Taking down Jack Ma has mostly stopped foreign investment in the Chinese tech sector. Other tech leaders in China are stepping down to do other things. I would bet a lot of their tech sector leaders would have a hard time leaving for a foreign "business trip" or "vacation" right now. Xi strongly favors state owned enterprises is telling business that they have to look to these SOEs for leadership in their respective sectors of the Chinese economy. Gee, what could go wrong there?

Aren't those the companies which send their non-white employees to work in the store rooms? I hope none of those A&F wearing-HKers are overweight either. I'd rather go for Uniqlo, Giordano or even Bossini. I just learnt something - Giordano was actually founded by Lai Chee-Ying. All these years and I never knew until today.

China has strangled the goose that laid the golden egg. It was the people who made Hong Kong, and the most productive are already gone. China will end up with a rock and an estuary peninsula where no one wants to live because there will be no jobs. It’s not like Shanghai, which manufacturing saved; HK is all trade. Take that away, and you've got a corpse.
Ego Sum Lux Mundi
The Chinese have the sense to keep a tight rein on the media, unlike the West whose media is largely owned and controlled by a certain group of people.

Stranger than fiction? This is exactly what happened in one of the "Ip Man" movies, except then it was the bad, selfish British Military police doing this!

Apple Daily editors arrested under Hong Kong security law and may be coming for you next. Not now, but in the future if we let China grow in your own backyard. We need to stop buying anything from China. If we continue to buy, we are part of their plan of total world domination.

If anyone has any doubt about what China intentions in it's future COLONIES in Africa, South America, South East Asia, and more, Hong Kong should be a good example and a sobering reminder of what is coming.

This is why Taiwan continues to fight!
Fighto!
Far, far too late. Their identity as a territory where freedom of thought, speech and movement is finished, gone forever. The smart Hong Kongers have already made plans to get out, either to the UK for those over 24 years old, or elsewhere. They likely have only a ~ 6 month window before they are banned from leaving by their Communist masters.
Fighto!
Disgusting, but no shock at all. My heart goes out to all at Apple Daily, and all those in HK who believe in democracy and freedom. Sadly, this is not everyone.
Hong Kong, I'm afraid, is now a Nazi-like police state, where anyone who speaks out against the corrupt HK govt, is subject to sudden arrest and "disappearance".
Boycott Hong Kong, Boycott Communist China, Boycott the Genocide Games 2022!

Capitalism is inherently anti-democracy. It's no wonder the state capitalism of the PRC is able to adopt anti-democratic measures so easily and so readily.

It's honestly so sad what's happening in Hong Kong. I really loved Hong Kong for what they were when I visited them before all this crackdown happened. I wish I could do something about it but feel quite helpless... Stay strong Hong Kong and never lose your identity!
Express sister
The cringe is real.

Never trust the CHICOMS.
snowymountainhell
Interesting. HK dissenters arrested by police dressed in Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, Polo, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, amongst other Occidental brands.
Apparently, continuing to take advantage of the conspicuous benefits of capitalism’s products and profit are not necessarily considered “collusion with foreign countries” nor “pro-democracy”.
Express sister
I'm pleased to see that you've realised how intensely cringe "ChiComs" is.
noriahojanen
So is the security law retroactively applied? Not only Hong Kong citizens, foreign residents can be targeted.
Boku Dayo
The CCP rears its ugly head again.
Never trust the communists.

Proof (as any more was needed) the the PRC and the CCP will not keep their word and have no respect for human rights.

By this point "concerns" is a too soft words, it is clear that there is no longer any press freedom in Hong Kong

Why do always countries like Russia and China come up with such things? That strikes me...
Numan
Harassment clear and simple. All those protesters were right all along!
Free Hong Kong!
