Another normal day in the USA...

16 ( +19 / -3 )

It seems that in the US a lottery is being played every day to see who will be the victim in the next daily shooting..

Again, the more I read US news, the more I love my clean, safe, civilized and gun free JAPAN!!..

Thank God I don't live in that country..

Terrible news, but what about in inner city Chicago, where three "people of color" shot by other "people of color," yesterday, the day before, and the day before that.

Perhaps such statistics don't quite fit the narrative.

People shoot each other in London too,

Guns are bad. We know that.

A gun accidentally discharged inside a Texas elementary school cafeteria on Thursday after a child allegedly brought the firearm to school, according to the Dallas Independent School District."

Mosaic, statistics show that those who keep guns in their house are vastly more likely to shoot themselves, whether accidently or purposefully, or commit mass murders when they go temporarily berserk.

My father had inherited a pistol from his father-in-law and had kept it on a table in a closet fully accesibly by my elementary-age schoolchildren. He'd simply forgot about it. I chastised him, and he moved it to a safer place.

People shoot each other in London too,

No they don’t. Not anymore. Since the UK enacted and started enforcing strict gun laws, gun crime has fallen off a cliff. Knife crime? Yes. Gun crime? Nope.

Hmm. What is it about the US that makes gun violence so common place?

That loudmouth panic-inducer who steals money and heads the NRA, that's how. For over 50 years he has stolen money by spreading lies and falsehoods that so-and-so was 'going to send agents into your home and take ALL your guns away!!!!!!!!'. And so many Americans fell for this cult mindset crap. not to mention how Americans got so desensitized to violence. War became entertainment on TV starting in 1991 and so many ugly developments happened, cresting and mushrooming into the dictatorship of the antichrist Caligula Don.

It didn't happen overnight, but it's been festering for a long time.

When I see the headlines, I wonder wasn't that yesterday's story? Yes, it was. And the day before. And the day before that. And the day before that.

And will continue to be the daily headline until.....

Unfortunately, just another day in the US. We have to do better. Condolences to those involved.

Here is a decent analysis of gun violence in the US from this year that may or may not have been posted here before. An easy read and pretty informative, I thought. I learned some things.

What has been festering?

Unfortunate as this incident is, it’s still a small price to pay for the great ideals of freedom that the founding fathers of America envisioned.

Folks might be outraged at certain isolated incidents like these but taking away guns and taking away the right to bear arms will result in a far worse situation where justice will be at the mercy of brigands and outlaws.

"Hmm. What is it about the US that makes gun violence so common place?"

I think it must be the climate.

Thoughts and prayers.

The homicidal death of more than one million Americans since the killing of John Lennon is “ a small price to pay” for freedom.

Really?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Perhaps such statistics don't quite fit the narrative.

But mentioning Chicago and shooting does fit the far right's narrative.

The homicidal death of more than one million Americans since the killing of John Lennon is “ a small price to pay” for freedom.

Really?

When you defund the police and allow the border to be unchecked and unwilling to prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law, yes, the killing will get out of control.

But mentioning Chicago and shooting does fit the far right's narrative.

Not the rights, but the people. Funny, Lightfoot will spend a fortune on her own personal security, but will not do anything to curb the crime that involves her very own constituents.

The homicidal death of more than one million Americans

So homicides don’t take place in countries where guns are banned right?

And humanity never encountered murders and mass killings before Samuel Colt came along if I may add.

Only folks who have faced oppression and persecution from their own governments in the form of strict and unreasonable gun laws can truly comprehend how valuable the right to bear arms is.

How come American 'patriots' always believe their government is out to get them ?

strange a Buddha supports guns. The US has the highest numbers of gun homicides in the G7 and G20 nations.

How come American 'patriots' always believe their government is out to get them ?

I’m not convinced they do.

I remember a very clever US man I worked with who spoke intelligently about a tyrannical government, the right to self-defence, only way to stop a bad guy etc. but finally boiled it down to 4 words:

”They just love guns”.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The million gun homicides is an old figure more up to date.

"Over 1.5 million people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980."

Freedom is expensive. Gun homicides cost the country $600 billion every year.

When your so-called 'law enforcement' officers look like regular combat troops, you might want to question where your society has gone wrong.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

strange a Buddha supports guns.

I have always maintained that guns are instruments of peace. In Buddhism we say that it’s the hearts and minds of people where violence is harboured. Therefore Buddhism rightly focuses on reforming and transforming the hearts of people.

Guns are merely instruments which can be used either ways by people. In the hands of law abiding citizens or even in the hands of a Buddhist, a gun can be an instrument of peace.

The US has the highest numbers of gun homicides in the G20 nations.

Most gun deaths in the US are suicides. The US has about the same number of gun homicides as my country, and my country has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.

What narrative is that? Sorry they chose a story to make you realize that there are bad people in every group. I guess you should enlighten us as to how the things in your post have anything to do with this incident. Also, when others shoot members of their same group, is there a label for that or is it an exclusive thing for 'people of color?'

4 ( +4 / -0 )

How come American 'patriots' always believe their government is out to get them ?

Maybe the origin of the term”patriot” as it relates to the forming of our own county.

and the fact that absent any individual gun ownership we would be mounting the passing of our queen?

and that our individual gun ownership basically ensures we will never be invaded, or at least not occupied by others?

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

RiskyMosaic, stats abound. Just Google "risk of owning a gun." For example:

Gun owners and those contemplating buying guns should learn about the risks associated with guns, including that the presence of a gun in the home significantly increases the risk of suicide, homicide, death during domestic violence disputes, and unintentional deaths to children and household members.

EvilBuddha

The US gun homicides in 2022 were 20,000. The highest gun homicide rate of all G20 countries.

In India, the world’s second most populous nation, getting a gun license involves thorough assessment and background checks. The country of 1.4 billion people had about 3.3 million gun licenses in 2018.

Where in the teaching of Buddha does it support guns or violence?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

There are more than 400 millions guns in the US.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

@wallace

India has 70 million guns in the hands of civilians out of which an estimated 62 million are illegally manufactured and procured.

This is the second highest number after the US in absolute terms so India is the last country one should quote for proving the success of strict gun laws.

Moreover my point is that it’s people who can use guns either for war or for peace. So the hearts and minds of people need to change. This is exactly what Buddhism teaches.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

That so many Democrats defunded our police and stripped them of their basic duties gun sales have been exploding and as long as the people don’t feel safe and crime continues to spiral out of control gun sales will continue to go through the roof.

I completely agree.
