How they got this number? This is probably just Libya.

For example, when more than 800 people died in an April 2015 shipwreck off the coast of Italy, Europe's deadliest migrant sea disaster, Italian investigators pledged to identify them and find their families. More than three years later, under a new populist government, funding for this work has been cut off.

And this is what humanity has fallen to.

Nobody cares, not really and those who do something about it; speaking out, contacting their parliamentary representatives, raising awareness, activism, are sneered at.

Described as infestations, cockroaches, human scum, invasions, hordes, plagues, swamps... we cannot begin to understand how bad things are for people to risk everything to flee their countries only to come up against such fear, hatred, ignorance and lies.

We here can count ourselves lucky in our comfortable and coocconed lives, but it could happen to any people, any country, at any time. All it takes is a change of circumstances.

Most people that hate on immigrants and refugees have lived such a sheltered life that they can't possibly understand that it's human nature to extricate yourself and our loved ones from bad situations.

To make matters worse, they live in complete, willful ignorance of what their own nations have done to create and/or exacerbate the problems in these regions, saving only small man's hatred for those born in other countries.

Humans are going through a period of devolution, the governments and institutions have dumbed people down enough so that - yes - we are actually going backwards as a species. To turn a blind eye to the problems that some migrants are facing (or to profit from it) is proof of that.

Stay home, or go to a neighboring country.

I don’t see that. I think we are better than we have ever been in terms of helping those outside of our own tribes - not perfect but better.

This is a tragic situation which requires practical and viable solutions. The answer can’t be to take in everyone escaping from trouble zones and call anyone who disagrees with this a racist or a bigot.

The long term goal must be to stop screwing up these places in the first place, although many of the problems come from within too, and look to help these countries build countries worth living in.

If our systems worked then we wouldn’t have these problems.....

"No matter where you stand on the whole migration management debate ... these are still human beings on the move," .... "Whether it's refugees or people moving for jobs, they are human beings."

Indeed, whatever your stance on the issue we can do better. That doesn’t mean open borders [a pernicious mischaracterisation of any stance that isn’t dumbly “let ‘ em croak], it means thinking smarter about this, investing resources and stemming the tides from the sources and putting pressure where needed.

Stay home, or go to a neighboring country.

Tell that to the victims of genocide, civil war, famine, religious persecution and all those horrors that cause people to flee.

The globalists who have been encouraging these migrations in order to have access to cheaper labor have blood on their hands.

Stay home, or go to a neighboring country.

Like Mexicans

This is obviously very sad, been happening for a long time, getting worse, will get MUCH worse, this isn't going away any time soon.

As climate change starts affecting more this WILL start affecting western countries as well, humanity is well on its way on the Highway to Hell! Toss in more war, strife the future is going to be nasty for many millions...….already is, but it will start coming closer to home to roost, mark my words!

The globalists who have been encouraging these migrations in order to have access to cheaper labor have blood on their hands.

This is yet another example of conspiracy theorist/anti-Semitic rhetoric which has no basis in reality.

Exactly the kind of nonsense that gets people like the Democrats, Soros and 11 people targeted and in the case of the latter group - massacred.

The hatred for people who have suffered far beyond what we will experience is stunning.

Don't let the fake narrative purveyors win.

cla68, Exactly right. And the irony is the bleeding heart liberals who support and enable it.

And the irony is the bleeding heart liberals who support and enable it.

So edgy.

There's nothing bleeding heart about wanting to save your family from death squads, religious pesecution, rape and genocide.

Toasted Heretic, Yeah, all those hundreds of thousands of military age men with their iphones and sense of entitlement flooding europe and rejecting assylum in other european countries in favor of Germany. So desperate - NOT.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

Merkel showed compassion and allowed them to seek asylum after thousands of innocents died in passage in the Mediterranean.

There were some rotten apples. Same as some Americans who came into my country and others.

Doesn't mean all migrants from any country are criminals. As for military age - that's irrelevant. Migrants are old and young and in between - all ages. All of them are targeted in their home countries for belonging to the wrong political or cultural grouping.

And yes, some of them carry mobiles - wouldn't you bring a piece of tech that could save your life?

There's nothing bleeding heart about wanting to save your family from death squads, religious pesecution, rape and genocide.

So maybe the headline should be "56,800 saved"

BigYen,

All virtue (signalling), no wisdom.
