America is finished as a democracy. Thanks to the new right, starting with Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Roger Ailes, and running through all the current bad faith GOP actors pushing the nihilism of the Maga cult for nothing but self interest.

Sad.

This is not surprising. It all comes down to one man. Trump! His insistance on loyalty to him over party, country and truth is the wedge being driven into a political climate that was fractured since the election of Obama. Right wing leaning voters bristled at a half black president and have blocked the smooth running and deal making that was bipartisan politics in the USA for centuries. Now Trump has driven his wedge into the cracks and opened them right up so that almost nothing is accomplished through deal making and the best and almost only way to get anything done is through majority numbers in senate and house.

As long as Trump remains relevant in the Republican party and they dont have the balls to confront his lies, the US form of democracy remains in danger.

Well, that is depressing to read.

American democracy is noisy, messy, and violent. Americans tend to forget their violent history and how much American democracy over time has prevailed in far worse events in comparison with current events. American democracy will prevail and continue to be noisy, messy, and violent.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

It is in danger. Many Americans, even those who post on this very website, have supported usurping democracy to have their favourite autocrat rule.

It's a shame. As a socialist, I believe that democracy, the rule of the people, not the rule of the few, should be paramount. Something like the insurrection of January 6 2021 would have been, just a decade ago, unthinkable. Now there are those on the right who believe that they have the right to govern. The right to rule.

And the right to serve a King.

That's not what we should be working towards. At all.

4 ( +16 / -12 )

In order to avoid a "civil war" the Republican party must purge itself of the Trump loyalists who continue to follow his lies. Otherwise the Republican Party will go down in history as the Party that attempted to overthrow the U.S. Government. ie; Terrorists.

Trump himself absolutely must be charged and prosecuted. Along with the misguided unpatriotic Republicans who are still keeping this man's insanity alive.

Americans cannot comment without mention the left or the right.

Hate for the other blinds them from seeing themselves as they truely are.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

well it looks like when reality kicks in.

USA continues in its agressive policy towards other weaker states however no wars won,any conflict started by USA ended with defeat.there are less countries around the world under their control.US economy in deep crisis as many products produced by US companies and foreign made ones/oursourcing od production abroad in favour of greed and fat profits of US corporations/.production of less competitive products on market/say guns or cars as good example/.

no war in sight easy to win overnight.no country in sight to rob of natural resources.

all resulting in loosing of position of world police, losing own credit internationally.inflation inside of USA very high, living costs growing higher than wages.

yes all in all it is not nice outlook for USA for next decade or so...while China and Russia grows, dont need to mention Southeast Asia nations,India,ROK,or even TW...

so yes democracy as we knew is thing of past USA no different.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Zichi....

It was a world leader in democracy.

Not true for any period in history. The US has a much better record of undermining or even overthrowing democracies than supporting them.

Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Iran, Korea, the Philippines, Lebanon, Indonesia, Syria, Egypt, Guatemala, Iraq, Chile, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Angola, Argentina, Grenada, Libya ... I could go on.....

Even Japan's post war "democracy" was stifled by the US.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Takeda, a bit of news for you. NO American president is voted in by the people.

lmao As an American I am well aware how my own government works, thank you, but that does nothing to change the fact Republicans tried to hand the election results to the loser (Trump). That's not normal. That hasn't ever happened in the US. Let's stop pretending this is all normal- it's not. And by pretending it wasn't a big deal, you're inviting this to happen yet again.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

As a proud American, what you are all witnessing is the beginning of a much stronger Democracy and much stronger America that is and always will be in the forefront of global leadership. The power of America is the people. Sit back and relax while watching America grow bigger and better. Trump will go down in history as the one who tried to create an America that resembles Russia, China, and North Korea but failed due to his lack of understanding of how American Democracy works for the people. America has been in bigger messes than what you see these days and always comes out of it like the Bald Eagle that represents the heart and soul of it's citizens.

“American Enterprise Institute reported that previous studies about political compositions and campus climate found that liberal and moderate professors on college campuses have always outnumbered their conservative counterparts. This is also the case for Quinnipiac, as public political contribution information suggests.

The only election fraud in 2020 was the claim of it.

25% of Americans think the insurrectionists were protecting democracy. Whither Goest Thou, America?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Since when was America not divided along patty lines, race and ideology, anyway?

And democracy (whatever that is) was only for the white and rich.

One year after the storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump, six out of 10 Americans believe the country's democracy is in danger of collapse, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Of course they do, because it is. We have one party, formerly called The GOP, that has transformed into the Party of Denial and Delusion - and has rejected the democratic principles laid down by our founding fathers 200 years ago.

Seventy-six percent of those surveyed in the poll by Quinnipiac University said they think political instability in the United States is a bigger danger than foreign threats.

Indeed - just look at the far-right militias that stormed through state offices last year, that planned to kidnap and execute the Michigan Governor, and obviously, the pro-Trump domestic terrorists (yes, Ted Cruz was right) that desecrated the Capitol last year.

A majority of those polled -- 58 percent -- said they think the nation's democracy is in danger of collapse. Thirty-seven percent disagreed.

The 37% that wear MAGA caps, carry Confederate flags, and say Hugo Chavez stole the election...

Fifty-three percent meanwhile said they expect political divisions in the country to worsen over their lifetime. As for the likelihood of another attack in the United States like the one on Congress, 53 percent of those polled said it was very or somewhat likely.

The Repubs and far-right are already planning another violent coup in 2022/24 when they lose. That's why the work of the Jan 6th commission is so important - to show that Trump WH associates colluded with these far-right groups, and with the help of cowardly Repub Congressmen, planned the violence that occurred...

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

@blastcaptain

Dems love to divide. That's why they focus on race, gender, LGBT, rich, etc.

Interesting there are so many Trump comments, because he has been censored by the media and Big Tech for over a year. It's too bad, because he made America strong and prosperous for all- not just a select few.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

The Repubs and far-right are already planning another violent coup in 2022/24 when they lose.

And you heard this from…..CNN? NYT or the View?

That's why the work of the Jan 6th commission is so important - to show that Trump WH associates colluded with these far-right groups, and with the help of cowardly Repub Congressmen, planned the violence that occurred...

No, The only thing it’s going to show it is how biased the Democrats and three Republicans are, because if they were really serious both Kinzinger and especially Liz Cheney would not be on the committee just for the fact what Liz Cheney did and doctored Mark Meadows statements and was caught doing it, and that alone should get her kicked off the committee, but it hasn’t and it shows you that this is completely political and nothing else. It’s not going to help the Democrats, it’s not going to hurt Trump or keep him from running and it’s not going to keep them in power this winter

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

58% of Americans have no idea what the rest of the world looks like, have no historical context for their worldview, nor know the projections for the next few decades. America will be just fine. Democracy is messy, the alternative hell.

Don’t believe the hype, especially the emotional self-loathing ones.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Term limits are a great idea! Two terms in the House, one in the Senate, one in the Big Chair. Age limit would be nice too- max of 70 years old to begin your term. Politics was meant to be a sacrifice, a service to the country, not a career.

Also laws preventing politicians from joining the lobbyist class once they leave office (much like 'amakudari' here).

What's needed is another peer-reviewed paper.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Not sure what they're referring to when they say " democracy" because America never was and never will be a democracy. Perhaps they are referring to faith and confidence in our electoral institutions, which the left has worked hard dimish?

Biden compared people who don’t support his federal power grab on elections to supporters of “Jefferson Davis” not Abe Lincoln.

with the insinuation that Davis was a racist and a traitor and who could support such a person?

2022 Biden needs to speak with 1977 Biden. Democrats restored the citizenship of the leader of the Confederacy.

But in 1977, Biden was part of the Senate Judiciary Committee when it unanimously voted to have Davis’ citizenship restored, according to the Washington Examiner.

The bill was later signed into law by then-President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat.

Takeda, a bit of news for you. NO American president is voted in by the people. They are chosen by state electors, who are chosen by voters. Many countries have forms of non-direct elections, any parliamentary democracy for example. In Canada PM Trudeau won re-election despite getting fewer votes than the Conservatives and only getting 33% of the popular vote!

Zichi- gay and black people might disagree with you there...

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

also telling that I have 9 downvotes just for posting the poll results on the article about the poll.

Yeah I would be upset if my guy had a 33% approval rating too, and only 75% in his own party.

-8 ( +8 / -16 )

Ouch

Among adults, Americans give negative scores on the following three issues when asked about Biden's handling of...

the economy: 34 percent approve, while 57 percent disapprove;

foreign policy: 35 percent approve, while 54 percent disapprove;

the response to the coronavirus: 39 percent approve, while 55 percent disapprove.

Chuck Schumer said nearly all of his caucus is contacting Joe Manchin and telling him if he doesnt vote to remove the filibuster so that they can make federal voting laws, something bad will happen.

What do they say bad will happen? they say if voting laws are not changed, "all of us will lose our elections this year". All of them? even ones states Democrats won last year?

So to win, Dems need to change the rules (again) like they did for COVID.

thats interesting to hear.

In order to avoid a "civil war" the Republican party must purge itself of the Trump loyalists

That’s not going to happen, the left needs to get that out of their head, the republican party in its current form as establishment party of Washington DC is pretty much finished none of these people could ever get elected to anything anymore and they are mad about it and they can’t stop it, they lost some of the biggest supporters and they’re losing more and more independents up to 28% and that’s very bad for both parties. The Democrats can continue and focus on January 6 the rest of conservatives are focusing more on November of this year, the Democrats have their own Civil War that they have to deal with, the so-called moderates and the far left progressive wing of the party and this is another reason why Pelosi is going to get out as fast as she can later this year, because she’s speaker in name only and on the progressive side it’s AOC that’s really calling the shots, so they have their own inside Civil War that they have to deal with. Either way, the establishment is pretty much done on both sides.

Hate for the other blinds them from seeing themselves as they truely are.

I vehemently disagree with that, growing up in Europe I have seen political parties go at each other and it’s the same thing just with more parties bundled up and more of a selection. We have two parties and Everything else is consolidated within those two parties

Sad.

No, I would disagree, I think the downfall of what’s happening United States stems from the radical liberal policies from the left that are so hell-bent on destroying the checks and balances of our institutions and that these people continue to try and reshape and remake the United States into an authoritative European like socialist nation and at the same time drowning out all the sand from the left and using powerful liberals from social media platforms to silence anyone that has a descending or opposing viewpoint, the Democrats did not except the 2016 election for four years they have been trying to Indore a duly elected president and tried every conceivable way to oust the former president from office, it seems that these people have very weak memories and now the current administration with the policies are continuing the process of eroding all the secret norms and culture of this great nation with their politically correct and walk policies have done great damage to the nation and there are no signs of them leading up to spite the polls showing that these people are in serious trouble come the next election. The left values Democracy when it is applied to them and only them and not for anyone else and now they’re even talking about abolishing the filibuster. The freedom we have in the assault on all of our freedoms and our basic rights as Americans, they are after our first and second amendment rights and these people will not stop, but that will all come to an end very soon.
