After reading this news article, I am still wondering if the victims were men or women and I also wonder if the Mexican woman was also raped.

... seven Spanish men and a Mexican woman...

Either way, I hope the masked gunmen get 'exactly' what they deserve...

Peace

The Mexican woman wasn't raped. The Spaniards who were were all women. Pretty clear. Horrific way to have a holiday ruined.

The Mexican woman (maybe she was the owner, much older) and several men presents in the guesthouse were threatened and tied, while they raped the 6 women, all Spanish. Usually they don't report the rapes of Mexicans in the international news. But they happen all the time in this part of Mexico. along with the kidnappings, blackmailings, shootings...

I don’t think this was organized crime,” “This happens everywhere in the world, not just in Acapulco or in Mexico.”

Only you believes that. I'm sorry for all the honest people in Acapulco area, but the region has become a nest of gangsters and you can no longer receive tourists, nor even live your life, in decent security conditions. I hope Mexican authorities can do some large scale campaign and clean out the country of the gangs, but don't hold your breath as in hundred of years, they have not got any results with the little terrors in the mountains, and these mafiosi now are way more dangerous, equipped with modern weapons.

Thanks Wakarimasen,

The story has been edited so it is much easier to understand now (thanks Mods).

@Cos

Thanks a lot for the information, sad and scary though it may be. It is a different Mexico from the one I remember from my youth.

Not too sure, could have have been a drug deal gone bad, and these guys just want to "show tourists" who is in charge kind of thing plus these Spanish tourists were NOT in the tourist area of Acapulco, they chose to go on the cheap and rent some rooms etc..far away from the clean, safe hotels in in protected touristy area of that port city, do hope they find out who did this and arrest them!

Mexico has turned into a lawless cesspool.

Acapulco is not as bad as the South Side of Chicago, West Detroit etc...and has way better weather too so come on down but STAY in the hotels, not in off the wall places that do not have PROPER security.

This is what happens to a country full of Drug Gangs and you DIS-Arm it's people, so they can't SHOOT BACK. It WAS Legal to own a firearm by the " Common Folk " of Mexico until it's government decided the PEOPLE no longer "NEEDED " to own firearms.

Yet another reason why I wouldn't bother with Mexico.

Osaka looks pretty good now doesn't El?

Being a tourist in Mexico is not the best of ideas. Mexico is one of the richest countries there is (oil, minerals, gold/silver, food, culture) but the general populace is poor and you have a criminal government. The people in power do not want the wealth of Mexico to spread to its citizens = you have the gangs that install the fear/terrorism that the people of Mexico are used to but the rest of the World find shocking.

-I am actually surprised that the tourists were not killed.

Other countries (and cities) are the same however. If you get away from the designated tourist areas it gets rough real fast and these people make their living targeting tourists.

Chicago gangs are no-where near as bold as the open gangs that run in Mexico. Local populaces have their own gangs to keep the gov-sanctioned drug gangs out. You can honestly say Mexico is "gang" run from the top down. The only similarity I see is that most Mexicans are unarmed like most people in Chicago.

Sounds like a terrible place... the citizens unarmed and unable to defend themselves from the armed criminal element.

Oh, for Pete's sake. Seriously?

These tourists should have read their travel brochure more thoroughly if they didn't want to be attacked. I'm sure this quaint local custom is mentioned in there somewhere. You can bet it's in their tour contracts too, just below the big blocked lettering that says: "NO REFUNDS".

Mexico has become a war zone, not a tourist destintion. Anyone who would want to go there on a vacation should be nominated for a Darwin Award

Was on a cruise ship that visited there several years ago. A gunfight broke out between drug dealers and Mexican military in a nearby resort hotel with "PROPER security" and still more than 20 people died. Out of concern for its customers, travel agencies around the world should follow the majority of all cruise lines' decision and pull out of that market. Leave Mexican tourism to Mexicans.

I like Mexico, very warm, a ton of coast line, Catholic, very family orientated, fresh produce is bountiful and cheap, but as a tourist you really need to be careful and know what you are doing. If you do plan to go to Mexico, travel and stay as/with locals outside of the gangland areas.

Worst case scenario. Travel from the US into Mexico by car and get out of the tourist protected area (if they have one) and into the drug zones protected by the Gov and the gangs.

staying in off the wall places is still a safe option in places like japan, korea, china, singapore, hong kong, thailand, etc. never once felt threatened or unsafe even while walking around at 3am in remote locations. asia is pretty much the only place in the world i feel safe doing this.

You don't even have to enter a drug zone. I was working in San Diego with some guys who live there and we all decided to do some scuba diving at Bahia de Los Angeles in Baja California. One guy drove his late model Ford Taurus with some of the guys loaded in it while the rest of us rode in a Rent-A-Wreck and followed him. Five minutes across the border and before we could get out of Tijuana traffic, the Taurus gets pulled over for "speeding" (we were still in downtown traffic, so speeding is pretty much impossible to do). But we were in LUCK because for a paltry $50 the cop would let him go without impounding the car. The corruption in Mexican law enforcement makes Russia look like a land of impeccable integrity.

that's what is being reported now elsewhere in the media, do not mess about with Mexican drug cartels, the execute their own snitches with decapitation by chainsaws, that's the level some of them are on, rape?, it's like going out for coffee. Sad story, but do not mess around with those people or get burned and suffer the repercussions.

Flammenwerfer, I think you are find the "real reason" for this crimes, if you are from Canada, the USA, Spain etc..and think you can go down into Mexico and try to "bargain" for drugs?? This is what happens to stingy folk, and yes they were lucky they were "only raped" as opposed to having been tortured, get the their heads cut off etc..as what is the traditional narco terrorist style of dealing with those that try to "mess" with drug gangs, etc...

Like Fadamore above mentioned, I got pulled over a few times for speeding going about 30 mph in a 40 limit zone. They always ganked between $20 - $50 from me and let me go instead of taking me to city jail like they always threatened to do. They even tried to give me a ticket for driving with sandals on.

As for the rapes in this story, big groups of people don't normally get gang raped "all over the world" as the official said. Yes, it happens but they're pretty big incidents.

Yes, because everyone who goes to mexico goes for the drugs, right? Yes, I'm sure those women who were "only rape" were all looking for drugs. Talk about blaming victims..

Like I said, Osaka is looking pretty good, no El??
