I'll say it again - I think every American with a gun and an attitude should be put in a high-walled enclosure and allowed to express their 'right to defend themselves.'

Then, when the gunshots die and the smoke clears, will the last man standing still claim that 'guns make us safer!'?

Ridiculous, as are those who defend the right to own guns.

Footnote - During the Vietnam war, more Americans lost their lives due to guns at home than the total number of U.S. soldiers who died IN A WAR.

That's worth repeating - more Americans died outside the Vietnam war zone than died in the war zone.

Drive by shooting? Hey guys, your country needs you. Why not exchange that rundown junker for a brand new Humvee. And why not replace that rusty old automatic rifle with a 50 cal. That's right, the US army is currently recruiting wayward souls like you to help in the policing of Iraq. Sign up today and we will actually teach you how to put down your target, AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

Forget the victims, debate gun control instead.

SuperLib: "Forget the victims, debate gun control instead."

You're right, SuperLib; let's instead honour them by ignoring the tools that killed them.

You do realize it's possible to mourn the dead AND actually try and do something about it not being repeated. The biggest insult you can do to the dead is not learn from their lives and what ended them to try and help those still living. Shame you don't see that.

It just wouldn't be JT if they didn't.

I'm with ya, smith. I say we express no sympathy for the victims unlike what we'd do for any other country. The gun control debate is just too important to hold up and the bodies are still fresh and make for better projectiles. I'd even go as far to say that anyone expressing any sympathy at all for the victims is simply working against them.

Now that the blood's been splattered, let the pro vs anti-gun wrestling match begin. Good luck, gentlemen.

I advocate the issuing of bazookas to all American university students. Then when they are shot at by punks in cars with automatic weapons they can blow them and their cars to kingdom come.

Make my day, punk!

I was being sarcastic to point out how foolish you were to think that you cannot pay respect for the victims while also trying to stop it from happening again. Apparently, you think ignorance is the best method to deal with loss of life. Sadly, that's why we have this article day in and day out. I know you agree with gun control in theory. Seriously, it's to the point where gun-related deaths could be a whole section on its own.

I am curious, though, as to what you would do if a parent of the victims said there was a need to ban guns -- would you spit in their face and tell them to grieve, not to turn it into a gun debate? :)

" Seriously, it's to the point where gun-related deaths could be a whole section on its own."

By that I mean news section, of course. I mean, it's not a subject for debate or anything, right? Just something to read, say, "How many times am I going to be forced to read these headlines?" and move on, right? :)

Beezlebub,

You've been playing Grand Theft Auto too long ;)

Banning guns in the US would be like trying to stop the sunrise at dawn. There's simply too many of 'em.

@ sushisaki Regadless if guns were legal or illegal, the people who perpetrated the drive by (criminals) would still have been able to have access to guns (seeing they dont follow the law) i think you just used this as an excuse to spew your liberal attitudes.

Not necessarily. These guys could easily have picked them up at a 'legal' gun show, or some state with lax background checks, etc. In a country with much more stringent laws, true, criminals can get access to guns. But in the US ANYONE can get them and BECOME criminals. A person is not a criminal before they commit a crime, and non-criminals can't get guns in other countries with even a fraction of the ease they can in the US.

@ smithinjapan

im just saying, if guns were outlawed today in US this would still be the norm.

And you would be wrong - again. A group of people who want to guns for self-defense aren't the aggressors. That's something the hoplophobes can never wrap their minds around.

Oh yeah, look how well that's worked everywhere else. The suicide rates are higher in Japan. Guns are prohibited in Britain, so criminals use knives (when they don't have guns) while the victims still don't have anything. Say, how about finally enforcing the existing laws? Wouldn't that make more sense than a ridiculous - and impossible - outright ban?

Rap music and its culture that glofies such cowardly violence as drive-by shootings? Smith, you're finally onto something!

Name them.

In fact, it would be much worse. Just ask Chicago.

I've got a question for all the pro-gun-ban (because we already have gun control to varying degrees in all 50 states), anti-self-defense, hoplophobic JT regulars: Would you feel any better if the coward just ran people down with the car?

[Rap music and its culture that glofies such cowardly violence as drive-by shootings? Smith, you're finally onto something!]

Yes a ban on Rap music would be better at deterring drive by shootings. To many years of hearing violence condoned in this crap form of music where everyone and his Ho have a chip on their shoulder. Music that totally disrespects people and glorifies "gangsta" A-holes who would be nobody without their weapon. There should be a check to ask what kind of music you like before you buy a gun.
