When medical staff tested for the presence of any variants of concern they found that she was carrying both the Alpha strain, which originated in Britain, and the Beta variant first detected in South Africa.

That is delinquent journalism not worth the keyboard it vomited out of.

The Spanish Flu of 1918 actually came from the midwest US, not from Spain, but its still called the Spanish Flu.

It came from the battlefields of WW1, brought home by returning US soldiers to Kansas barracks, where it's first officially documented

Because WW1 soldiers from many parts of the world brought it home with them, that's how it was able to spread to so many parts of the world so quickly. Remember in 1910s, regular civilians would take weeks by boat to travel to distant places (Titanic anyone?) - people didn't travel by air yet, let alone from Kansas spreading to the rest of the world so quickly

It was erroneously attributed the Spanish Flu because it was widely reported on the Spanish media (and coverage only increased after the Spanish King Alfonso XIII came down with a nasty case). Spain was a neutral nation in WW1 and thus didn't censor their media, while warring nations censored their media from bad news (such as the Flu) that could lower morale
