Sad news. I hope Japan can send some experts.

There are conflicting reports about the depth, but it sounds like a very shallow one. Magnitude 7.9 near the surface will be Shindo 6+ or 7 on the Japanese scale, easily enough to bring down masonry buildings. Fingers crossed for everyone affected.

Interesting. Scientists have recently discovered that the center/core of the Earth has stopped spinning. I wonder if its going to have an impact on seismic activity. Turkey hasn't had a quake like that since 1939. Of course, they won't be able to prove anything, but they say the core stops and changes direction every 75 years or so. That was in the 1940s-60s. Some big quakes happened during that time period. In fact, 8 of the top 10 the strongest quakes of the 20th century occurred between 1946 and 1965.

Building with bricks, stones, and concrete is surly not a good idea in these areas, I hope they will start using wood or a combination of the two.

Hearts out to all in Turkey-Syria. Footage is just coming in of 30 floor apartment blocks simply crumbling to the ground - as if they were demolished purposely. Tragically many are trapped.

The death toll is in the thousands and will rise much, much more.

Turkey-Syria is calling for foreign help. I hope Japan can send some hyper-rescue teams and dogs.

@Eastman But the world calls it what it is Turkey!!

Turkiye changed the English spelling and pronunciation of their name last year to more closely match the Turkish pronunciation. The UN has adopted it. J-T and even some of the Middle Eastern press has not yet changed.

California, Japan and Chile need to send some of their experienced earthquake disaster rescue experts and fast.

I can't find the article right now, it was in AL-Monitor or Middle East Eye, but Turkey has a problem with a lot of unpermitted buildings. Istanbul has whole city blocks of unpermitted buildings thrown up by greedy developers while city and national governments all looked the other way. They also have weak building codes on the occasions their codes are enforced. We see the tragic results.

I'm worried about Tokyo area since the last big earthquake was in 1923. It seems to happens every 100 years or so, folks who live in Tokyo please be ready.

Don't worry, Tokyo is the most prepared city in the world to deal with earthquakes.

This makes me so sad. Prayers to Türkiye and Syria. As for the name, Türkiye is the new name since 2022 in every language. It should be respected.
