It may be advanced by Chinese standards but compared to the ships that are coming out of American, British, German, Indian and Japanese yards, this is at best a previous generation ship. Even its new aircraft carrier is old tech and based on a 40 year old soviet design. While they may do well in terms of numbers the quality issues will remain.

Still, lets see where it goes first, maybe to one of those new "uninhabited" islands in the South China Sea perhaps?

It has come strange camouflage in this picture...

Are you sure? It isn't as revolutionary as Zumwalt, but it doesn't look bad compared to say the Japanese Asahi, its closest contemporary and competitor (though Type 55) is larger.

North Korea, take note.

I'm sure China will openly admit that this destroyer is 40 years behind US and Japanese versions.

Heck, Beijing will even say its missiles are inaccurate too!

Therefore when the Izumo or Blue Ridge is hit and sunk please understand it's not intentional and due to antiquated technology!

Kobe, looks like the Chinese misunderstood the principles behind dazzle paint (only 100 years out of date!) or is this a cunning stealth ploy!

As to its effectiveness without details of its specifications, equipment performance and crew performance it is hard to say how much this strengthens their naval capability.

Oh jeez. Can we just get armageddon over and done with already?

and their dispute over a group of tiny, uninhabited islands in the East China Sea has at times threatened to break out into open confrontation.

It's almost laughable, isn't it? Almost. Fighting over breadcrumbs and specks. This is how far mankind has progressed. Encouraging, right?

It's sure is pretty... But the real question is, how well can they defend themselves against a 30,000 ton container ship...

@John Brown

Simple unlike the US Navy, PLAAN will shoot and sink the ship before it hits.

Guys, where did you see camouflage or dazzle paint? The usual grey color, standard for navies around the world. Plus colorful streamers, also usual for ship launching ceremonies in many countries.

China says it needs a powerful navy to defend its 14,500 kilometers (9,010 miles) of coastline, as well as its crucial maritime shipping routes.

Well yea...if you keep expanding your "coastline" you'll need to keep expanding your navy.

"If you keep expanding your "coastline" you'll need to keep expanding your navy"

Western countries call China is a threat as a covenience excuse to wage intimidation at China, even Chinese has a few 'Sampan' at  sea like those days in 1950!    So you backoff!

Elephant, I hate to say it but the only aggressive and intimidating power in the region, who is actively expanding territory and rattling sabres is China!

The acquisition and creation of new islands and then militarising them is hardly encouraging or helpful to peace now is it? Ignoring international agreements and rulings over international waters is not the showings of a power who is prepared to compromise!

@ Joyridingonthetitanic, don't be sorry for stating the obvious.    If the CCP were acting differently and had proceeded differently instead of trying to claim the whole region for themselves, this news would have been seen in a different light.  But yes, they are aggressively attempting to expand (aka true imperialistic actions) territorial "claims" to gather more resources for themselves.   It's how wars always start.

China is not the only country reclaiming islands in the SCS.

In fact it's not the country with the most numerous islands occupied and militarized there.

Zeroing solely on Beijing on this issue is unfair and dangerous.

The PRC should be more vocal on this issue and show the world the pictures of the rocks reclaimed and expanded by other claimants.

Otherwise the world will only see one picture out of the whole island album.
