Some comments here from people who have never visited the Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Samoa, Tonga etc. Just the hate of China made them comment like The Pacific Islands dodged a bullet !

But some like myself have lived in Africa and still have connections there and know VERY well how the Chinese do business there, so yeah they dodged the bullet.

And for the record, hatred of the CCP is not hatred of all of China. get it right.

I guess they’ll just continue to be satisfied with the coins that Australia, The US and Japan throw to them as donations !

Better than the alternative

It's only sensible to be cautious and look at the experiences of others who have accepted Chinese 'largesse'. Invisible strings attached? If you can't seen them, then...

If you are not careful you may lose control/sovereignty over land that you lease out, like China's fenced-off PLA space antenna in Argentina etc.

Exactly … people don’t know the hardship the Pacific Islanders are facing day and night struggling to put food on the table for their families. This was a real missed opportunity!

Being a regular visitor with many friends there ( meeting locals, staying in villages instead of hotels ) to many islands in the Pacific I for one can say that this was a missed by these nations. Until now these smaller islands have just relied on Australia financially to keep their economy moving. Every once in a while countries like Japan and the US give small donations to them as well but it’s like a penny in the bucket! I remember 3 years ago when a big cyclone hit the Fiji islands and there was massive destruction, Australia donated 2million Fj dollars , Japan a mere 100,00Fj dollars and the US 125,000Fj dollars ( pathetic ). China at that time contributed more than 10 million for infrastructure rebuilding! The lives of these Pacific Islanders has not improved much by keeping the current agreements with Australia and the US. Fiji was more developed than Singapore in the early 90’s and look at the difference now ( Singapore a million times more developed )! The way things are, The Pacific islands will remain poor, and locals will continue to suffer! They should have seriously considered the offer from China as it would have made the life of the locals so much better!

It takes time. They will wake to reality when they see the sinking western boat, and the prosperous world China has created. They have a saying in Fiji, “Fiji time”. It means if you are waiting for the 12:00 bus, even after 7 hours it will come. Always does, just not in western time, but Fiji time.

Nothing is fixed yet, and they probably aren’t not completely stupid there , knowing how that will turn out when seeing other samples from the Chinese activities or ‘generous’ loans on their Silk roads or in parts of Africa. I guess they all just want to poker up the price a little bit. Look, dear West, the Chinese will pay this sum, now also raise your offerings quickly… lol

Japan, rightly so, has not exploited the Pacific tuna stocks, because Japan cares about the unrepresented class of Pacific Islanders. China on the other hand is putting all the chess pieces in place for a plunder, just ask the Ecuadorians.

A foreign power is proposing law enforcement moves in a peaceful regions and no one asks why? Why did Malaitans rioted?

Sigh...and where is the French? This is right in the middle of New Caledonia, they were very quick yo throw a tantrum at Australia/US/UK.

OMG, national security policy based on trinkets thrown from balcony. The good is fleeting, the bad go on for ever, just look at Sri Lanka, same playbook, same chequebook, different crooks.
