Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell had called on Moore to drop out of the race, and other Senate leaders had suggested he should eventually be expelled from the Senate if elected.

Yeah, I give him two years before it goes back to Republican again. Either way, Jones is a very weak Democrat in a Republican State entering the Senate because the majority of Alabamians don't agree on any progressive issue, but with a candidate like Moore you had about 22% of voters stayed at home and over 56% of Moore supporters decided they couldn't go with Moore siting the allegations surrounding him, but there is a silver lining in all of this, Jones will have to fall more in line and if he wants to get reelected in the future and doesn't follow the ultra conservative State of Alabama, he's toast. So he would have to meet Trump halfway on many of the issues that are in the hearts of the people of that State.

In a tweet, Trump congratulated Jones, a former U.S. attorney. "The Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!" Trump tweeted.

The tweet was spelled correctly and correctly used commas to demark clause boundaries. We can be fairly certain it was his lawyer who wrote it, not Trump. Odds are good what Trump was actually doing when that tweet went out was throwing covfefe at his toveevee.

If Trump is even less popular in two years time, I sure as heck wouldn't put my money on his preferred candidates.

I think we're going to see a cascade of these over the next couple of years. No, it wasn’t, Trump is still mostly very popular with that State and won’t 72% of Evangelicals. I’ve been to Alabama 4 times and it’s as conservative as it gets, there is no way that State will change blue at least not in the forseeable future, maybe once all of us are long dead and gone there might be a chance.

I never supported Moore, i don’t live in Alabama, so it wasn’t up to me, i probably wouldn’t have voted for Moore, but I wouldn’t have voted for Jones either. I would have probably just do a write-in. His election will not effect the pending votes in Congress on a tax overhaul or government funding.

Not the latter certainly, but the former - that's probable, for two reasons.

First, the GOP's three-defection margin will be cut to two as soon as Jones is seated, and this puts heavy time pressure to get a bill to vote at a time when the GOP can't even agree on corporate or individual top-bracket rates - and that's not to mention the myriad carve-outs. So the "It'd be nice to get this done before Christmas" pace is now "We've gotta get this done before Christmas!"

Second, assuming Corker remains a 'no' (a solid assumption), the GOP can only afford to lose two more senators. Several, such as Collins and McCain, have been wavering, but the Trump/GOP "This must be done!" juggernaut has so far pulled them along. But the GOP is losing now, and why betray your values (McCain) and threaten your future (Collins) for a lost cause?

Work will resume on the tax bill in a few hours under a dramatically altered atmosphere. The existential imperative to get it done still exists - imagine the full first year of Trump's presidency with zero legislative accomplishments and zero teed up! - the question is whether the will has been broken.

Not trying, it is a positive result for in the sense, as problematic as Jones might be, but imagine if Moore would have won, the GOP would have filed to get him unseated before he even steps foot in the Senate which would have been hard to do, the fighting would have been fierce, the people of Alabama would be even more outraged, the GOP would have felt some possible repercussions at the polls for accepting an alleged sexual predator, the overall optics of it would have been bad, even though I get why they wanted Moore to have a more closer majority, but in the end, it might be better and it still may work out in Trump’s favor.

Doesn't matter when the point is that even THIS MORNING you guys were saying it is a referendum on Trump. Watch the very embarrassing interview of Moore's spokesperson this morning saying, "Moore's going to win it; Republicans know it. America knows it. The world knows it. Because he's moral," etc. etc. I want to ask him what he thinks now. As such, this is a devastating loss for Trump in particular, and the GOP in general. An addition to the wrench suddenly tossed into the GOP's tax "reform" plan is a whole lotta worse blood between McConnell - who counseled arms-length from Moore - and Trump, who is no doubt cursing McConnell even as I write this as being responsible for Moore's defeat. Trump throwing in his last-minute support behind Moore's doomed candidacy makes Trump look like a weak fool, and neither characterization pleases Trump at all.

It's simply an election, which is inconsequential apart from legislation. Just came back from walking my dog and was thinking about the psychological factors. Assuming Corker's out on tax "reform" and that one other senator defects, that would be a tie requiring Pence's vote. The worst legislation, the most unpopular in a generation, one which would radically alter the financial landscape of America and which has busted through every single legislative guardrail designed precisely to prevent exactly this - well, if it's 50-50, every single GOP senator who votes for it owns it in its entirety. During the next election, they will be reminded of it.

And sometimes people don't care to divulge character transgressions unless one is going to affect bigger things or a lot more people. (For ex: coworkers may not like someone but don't mind much just having him/her as a fellow coworker, but once he/she starts being considered for the boss position, then that's when they let the management know how he/she won't make for a good boss)

The original narrative, if you will, was correct for rural areas where Moore won by huge margins.

He also won among people identifying as white and deeply religious, and he won the age group over 65. He lost nearly all the other age groups with one group too close to call.

So yes, the narrative applies to rural areas where uneducated white people live and for people identifying as white and religious. They voted 80-90% in support of Moore.

The fact that he only won the over 65 year old demographic should scare Republicans to death, but they are too slow on the uptake and will not change their losing agenda. They would rather push through unpopular laws that will further kill them in future elections.

So, to say that Jones will lose in two years is a stretch.

Oh, please! Take a trip down to any city in Bama and there is nothing that’s progressive about it, adhering to it or even taking root. Basically, Trump is in good standing, now that the economy is becoming an unstoppable juggernaut the longer it goes, the more difficult it will be to dislodge the President. Don’t know much about Baseball, but in chess, it seems it’ll be a checkmate, good on the President.

As for Moore, what I am curious about it this: now that the election is over and his campaign failed, what will happen to his accusers? Will they fade away now that they aren't needed, or will he actually have to confront them in court? If the former, it is a despicable strategy by the Democrats. If the latter, we can at least hope for some form of justice. The accusers deserve their chance to prove their stories.

Most conservatives are hoping that the Democrats make more of this victory instead of seeing it as an outlier. GOP voters stayed home in record numbers rather than making an unpalatable choice. It would be foolish to expect the same thing to happen again.

Moore was a grotesquely unsuitable candidate, worse even than Trump himself, which is really saying something. So it would be wrong to read too much into the result, but still it shows what voters in so-called red states really think about the Trump/Bannon agenda. Administration should be very afraid.

Jones at best will the equivalent of Olympia Snow in Senate, if he honestly wants to try and keep the seat. Try to downplay the loss and blame the fact that a failure of a candidate was on the ticket, but most voters didn't like Moore to begin with.

This vote was partially a referendum on Bannon and Trump because Moore was a mirror of their platform.
