So the ship just returned from a freedom of navigation torment to China then crashed into big big big ship in Singapore

What if the collision took place near one of them islands?

Usually after one mishap there is a big knee jerk reaction to be ULTRA SAFE, seems like they're just gonna keep bumping into things at this rate.

Reckless sense of indifference , an exaggerated feeling of self righteous importance, and excessive preoccupation with cell phones can have consequences. I have been given to believe that in the sailing ship days a ship had a job called LOOKOUT.

Is it me, or did both ships get hit in almost exactly the same spot?

You mean McCain and Fitzgerald? No, both ships got hit in rather different spots. Fitzgerald was rammed in the starboard (right side), under the bridge.
Something is very wrong with USN crew seafaring / navigational training these days. Two collisions in a row, and from the photos of the damage I got the impression that both destroyers did not take any avoiding actions, as if the watch on the bridge was asleep or got suddenly blind, and they did not see the incoming merchant ships till the last moment. And the grounding of Antietam off Yokosuka, the place what all 7th Fleet navigation officers should know as their backyard! Too much dependence on high-tech gadgets, or what?

It seems the USN brass didn't learn a thing or two from the Fitz ramming incident.
The Captain of the McCain should have ordered a search on the flooded compartments asap .
Lives could have been saved.
RIP brave seafarers.

The first time the Navy had a stand down with US Navy Ships was in November 1989. There were a lot more naval accidents then, versus now.

Both ships were said to be heading into Singapore, presumably in the same direction. To be hit there on the port side, assuming the tanker was heading in a straight line, the McCain must have crossed her path, pointed southwards towards Indonesia.
Just a breath of a rumour on another forum (but with no link attached) suggesting that there was something wrong with the McCain's steering system...

Accident happens. Only four accidents so far, this year, don’t worry there are many more US Navy ships to take turn. The Navy is trying to get on the Guinness World Records. This really reflected in the mediocre skills and experience of the US Navy. What if next one is nuclear explosion.
