Good for Taiwan! And Good for Hong Kong! We all need to help each other from the Matrix!

YEs, agreed! At least Taiwan has the B@lls to do something!

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Taiwan has a bucketload of recent US expensive weapons. HK has umbrellas. HK used to account for over 20% of Chinas Financial trade. Now less than 6%. They should not be used as a puppet in US aggression to China. The 2 systems worked very well. I used to live there and have visited there many times.

they should compromise with China and slowly wait for China to evolve. Civil war kills civilians, not one of the worlds biggest armies.

Goodlucktoyou:

They should not be used as a puppet in US aggression to China.

But it is not the US that is snipping away at HKs independence, it is the CCP. Barking up the wrong tree very much?

15 ( +19 / -4 )

The world needs to support both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

15 ( +18 / -3 )

Props to the leader of Taiwan. A lady with balls of steel.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Taiwan and Hongkong have to stay together against the biggest Bully in the world: China

And the rest of the world should support them!

I hope the Riots and the Resistance against the Bully China will continue!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

The Communist China-supporting government of Hong Kong, public servants, police and pro-China citizens are ALL traitors to democracy, and fair game for Hong Kongers fighting for their freedoms. If anything does happen to them, they've brought it all upon themselves for selling out to Communist bully China.

Hit these freedom-hating terrorist cowards hard with whatever means you have, freedom fighters!

Along with Taiwan, I stand with Hong Kong!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The world needs to support both Hong Kong and Taiwan

They should, but they won’t ans that’s the sad reality.

I'm afraid that Hong Kong and Taiwan will lose if they continue to stand up to China, but I hope they never stop fighting, and I hope the world is watching.

I agree, now if everyone one the planet would boycott buying anything Chinese or Chinese made that would severely damage their economy and they would have no choice but to backdown.

@ Good luck to you comments: They should not be used as a puppet in US aggression to China."

In what way is HK a puppet of the US? Please elaborate. I notice one response you received was pretty much correct as it has been the CCP just wiping what cash cow HK was for them. Also Britain does have a get of jail clause in the agreement that China made which allowed them the "one country, two systems" and not to remove, manipulate nor change or end the promise which is in writing or else lose HK and it would revert back to British rule once again. The agreement would be null and void. Read it. It's in the fine print.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Let's help out our brothers and sister in Taiwan and HK, love, compassion, kindness and understanding is the way forwards, not tyranny!!!

12 ( +12 / -0 )

It's an internal matter? No it's an international matter. Nobody wants to see internment/education camps, concentration camps again. Nobody wants social recognition used as a weapon against people. If the ruling Communist chinesese Party are so worried about their flock then take a look at yourself. The forces that be might be the problem not the people.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

@RGCIVILIAN1

A very good point you have brought up.

I’m sure not many people knew about that clause.

the question is, would Britain (& the world) have the balls to enforce it ?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Also Britain does have a get of jail clause in the agreement that China made which allowed them the "one country, two systems" and not to remove, manipulate nor change or end the promise which is in writing or else lose HK and it would revert back to British rule once again.

I wasn't aware of this clause, but it is hardly likely to be enforced. HK would not passively revert to British rule and China will never give it up.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

they should compromise with China and slowly wait for China to evolve.

Communist regimes are incapable of evolution. They persist intact or disintegrate.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

China had agreed to the "one nation-two systems" until 2047. If they can't hold to their promise, the handover agreement should be considered null and void, Hong Kong revert to British control and the territory guarded by UN Peacekeepers, until Hong Kong establishes it's own government.

China clearly feels that they are going to lose Taiwan, because as soon as Taiwan declares sovereignty it will be welcomed by the entire world. So now they are digging their authoritarian claws deeper into Hong Kong which is far less defensible militarily from China.

There is nothing "wrong" with China or it's people. It's the dictatorship in power that is "wrong", for everyone.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Good on Taiwan for speaking up for Hong Kong and asserting that it is already a sovereign nation. The other democratic nations of the world need to speak up too.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Also Britain does have a get of jail clause in the agreement that China made which allowed them the "one country, two systems" and not to remove, manipulate nor change or end the promise which is in writing or else lose HK and it would revert back to British rule once again.

Sorry but no such clause exists anywhere in the Sino-British Joint Declaration. If you can provide specific details of where we can find this I'd be very interested.

Let's look at the actual facts here; When Hong Kong was transferred back to China in 1997 both Britain and China gave their blessing to Hong Kong's quasi-Constitution called the Basic Law. It formed the legal basis for what Hong Kong was going to become under 'one country two systems'.

Article 23 of the Basic Law requires that Hong Kong implement local legislation banning treason, secession, sedition, subversion, and foreign political interference and influence:

Article 23: The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall enact laws on its own to prohibit any act of treason, secession, sedition, subversion against the Central People's Government, or theft of state secrets, to prohibit foreign political organisations or bodies from conducting political activities in the Region, and to prohibit political organisations or bodies of the Region from establishing ties with foreign political organisations or bodies.

For better or worse, Hong Kong has never complied with this requirement of the Basic Law despite having nearly 23 years to pass something, anything. China has let this slide for decades but their patience seems to have run out. Whatever we may think of the content of Article 23 or how China may try to abuse it, China is not actually abolishing 'one country two systems' or violating the Sino-British Joint Declaration by simply insisting that Hong Kong fulfill its original obligations dating back to the 1997 handover.

Communist regimes are incapable of evolution. They persist intact or disintegrate.

While I’ve got no time for the CCP, you can’t argue it hasn’t evolved from Mao to Xi. This is part of the reason it has persisted.

The CCP is still an appalling regime but it isn’t a regime of idiots. If you listen to the CCP talk nowadays, the ideas of communism as espoused by Mao are hardly mentioned.

What is kind of interesting is that mainlanders probably can't see what the problem might be...after all, they have been guided all their life by their non-elected politburo. 99% of residents have seen no adverse results. In fact, they have only seen, their "great" leadership bring excellent social and economic benefits.

However, real freedom, once experienced is not likely to be sacrificed easily. The HK and Taiwanese Chinese having tasted the fruits, want and should demand long extending unalienable rights that all free-thinking humans see as a base case.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

In fact, they have only seen, their "great" leadership bring excellent social and economic benefits.

l wouldn’t go that far. The CCP has certainly overseen economic expansion but there are hundreds of millions still far behind. It has been argued that this, not lack of freedom or rights, will bring down the CCP if it is to be brought down.

I agree with your idea that China doesn’t have a history of democracy and those looking from the outside in often don’t get the full picture. One thing I got from Chinese people in general is that they prize economic growth and unity above democratic freedoms.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Chinese all over the world must learn to talk to each other. This step will stop any other race to interfer with all Chinese affairs. Causing misunderstanding is the works of a very old system. The system is called manupilation of human beings or in other words, playing one off the other. Pls be wise, all Chinese people.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Now here is one for Trump and the US...do you support the democratically elected Government of Taiwan, a COUNTRY the US has promised to defend over the years, and HongKong, another democratic and relatively free region, or do you take the "money" from China instead?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

A sad time.

I can't help but think that Xi is making a mistake. China would be a greater and stronger country by accepting differences, instead of trying to make everyone the same. This applies to the Muslims in China, the people of Tibet, and the people of Hong Kong. Crushing everyone who is different will make China a weaker country, in the long run, although it might make the dictator feel more secure in his palace.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

When an illegitimate government does all the contrary of what the citizen want, what else can you expect?

All this mess is triggered by and only by Beijing.

Hong Kong security, police chiefs warn of growing 'terrorism'

From China as the freedoms of Hong Kong are removed along with those who just want true freedom.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The CCP will disappear before 2030. Not reformed. Destroyed. All those that love Freedom and Democracy have a duty to help end the reign of that insidious regime. Sorry to the innocent citizens of China, but, I will no longer buy goods produced in China. Not while the CCP is in power. To me, China is gone. In its place is a huge body of water: The Bay of Tibet.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

"terrorism" in the view of the CCP is anything that stands in the way of its power.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

HK is in dire straits today because of two very important factors.

One is the fact that the UK returned the colony to the PROC instead of the ROC-Taiwan.

Second but not the least is the exploitative act by Washington to diplomatically junk their 'friend' and 'ally' Taipei in favor of a much larger market with so much cheap slave labor that can manufacture cheap goods for the Americans.

The HK death knell stated by Mike Pompeo started so long ago when both the USA and the UK kowtowed to China and pressed the switch to open the door for Beijing .

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Governments should reflect the wishes of the people. Hong Kongers want to be left alone, regardless of what the Beijing appointed leaders claim.

They don't want to leave China, but if that's the only option to retaining their freedoms, then there will be violence.

Then China will setup "re-education camps", kill some people, kill some relatives, and the violence will either escalate or end as the people become afraid of the CCP-stormtroopers. It will come to that.

China is causing the violence by not listening. Lam and this police chief need to go.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

This is smart timing by Taiwan (and HK). The world is ANGRY at China right now, and if the world was ever going to back HK and Taiwan, even with China's retaliation, it will be now.

The whole world is already hurting. It makes it easier to take on a bit more pain, to support the people of Taiwan and HK, than it would if things were rolling along smoothly like a few months ago.

Just as a seemingly small thing like Chernobyl sunk the Soviet regime in the USSR, we can hope that if anything good comes out of this virus, it will be that the world supports HK and Taiwan, and lessens its dependence upon China.

And America.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@ Hiro - the US and UK took a gamble on Communist China over the friendly, democratic ROC. They gambled that Communist China would "open up" to democracy, and become free and fair like the West. They backed the wrong horse, sadly.

It is not too late to untangle this mess, switch to ROC in terms of diplomatic relations, and ban ALL trade with Communist China. It may take 3-5 years for stubborn companies like Apple, Boeing, Nike and GM to be encouraged to leave China (ie taxed out of existance If they refuse) - but where there's a will, there's a way.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I'm afraid that Hong Kong and Taiwan will lose if they continue to stand up to China, but I hope they never stop fighting, and I hope the world is watching.

I too think that at least in the case of Hong Kong, they will surely lose this battle. But often times a lost battle can be a prelude to ultimate victory. As for Taiwan, the sooner the US fully recognizes Taiwan as a fully sovereign nation again the better. Sadly China is now dominant in the Western Pacific - the US Navy is now too small and too thinly stretched. No nation or alliance of nations have been able to prevent China’s military expansion into several strategic sea access points. The world has been complicit in fueling the economic gains that have made this possible.

I can only hope that the Chinese Communist governments actions and behavior during this pandemic will wake the world to the folly of standing by and watching another authoritarian Socialist nation stand at the pinnacle of world power and influence. It’s a bit disturbing to see so much effort put into undermining the US’s position in the world over Trumps relatively short period of time as president. He will only be president for another half or four and a half years. Let’s not undermine ourselves over transitory political differences. Trump is adamantly opposed to the Chinese and there is another election in six months.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The CCP is a fascist bureaucracy, not a communist state. China's military takes an oath to protect the CCP, not China or the Chinese people. Fascism (noun) "a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism." Small companies are not controlled much by the CCP. Middle to big companies are. Remember, President Xi is not a president. "President for life" is a euphemism for a "dictator" or even "Emperor."

3 ( +4 / -1 )

If you support Democracy, it seems you are now a Terrorist.

HK Has Protests - some are violent, but none exhibit Terrorism.

China is twisting things again to their own viewpoint, however now, they've done so to the extent that anyone who supports a Democratic process, is a Terrorist. so you, me, and pretty much the rest of the World are considered as Terrorists according to China's playbook.

I think, the real Terrorists here, are the CCP.

"The CCP were they to take an interest in the thoughts I have raised here would be after me, but not just me, but those related to me back in the mainland China. They'd use those relations imprisonment/torture cries in order to try and persuade me, and others like me, to return to be silenced."

This is how it is, for anyone who is a Chinese National living outside of China, and who makes a comment that the CCP dislikes. There's little wonder why everyone shouts praises of the CCP in Public. Wouldn't you under such cirucmstances ?

Now, have a thought towards those in HK - the Millions who protested previously... all of whom are now considered as having a Criminal record - HK may as well become the Penal Colony of China - just as Australia was, when used by the Brits Centuries ago.

I've read in the press that the UK is prepared to evacuate HK citizens to the UK... I hope for once, that this is true and they followup with real action - more so, than they did with Covid19. HK could becmoe the UK's "Dunkirk hour" of the future, perhaps even to put back the Boris Government into the good books with its own people's .. so long as it's done properly.... Boris you listening ?

I am just one but I support HK and real freedom.
