What happened then was far from the "political disturbance". There were mass killings and oppression. Yet the CCP officials have tried to ignore or whitewash its wrongdoing, just like a statement above.
Hokkaidoboy
Funny how they use the COVID pandemic to oppress HK people. It's important for the U.S., UK and other countries to maintain support for the HK activists, from Joshua Wong, to the whole Demosisto party, and to the CHRF organisation and its leader, Jimmy Sham, who was brutally attacked last year. Also, never forget professor Benny Tai and his Occupy movement. So many to mention, all worth of respect.
Toasted Heretic
This isn't going away.
Support the protesters who want freedom from a brutal regime.
Zaphod
Michael Machida
Vote for politicians who stand up against China and work on reversing our dependency on the CCP in key industries.
ulysses
May the CCP fall and people of China, Hong Kong and Macau liberated!!!
Michael Machida
Im on the side of the Hong Kong people. What can we do to help them?
Strangerland
Hong Kong belongs to the people of Hong Kong.
Though China is exercising their might to make right.
Artemis Rogers
Why does Hong Kong belong to people who are not from Hong Kong?? Why when the people of Hong Kong clearly do not want to belong to the PRC??
If your wife wanted a divorce would you slap her around and tell her she isn't going anywhere? Should someone come along and make YOU their wife without your consent or approval to teach the lesson of how very wrong you are?
Michael Machida
I really think China is going down. They are stealing Hong Kong away from the people, they create fake islands for military use, they spread bat disease around the world, they as a government lie as much as Trump. Wow! What are we to do?
lincolnman
Best of luck to our democracy loving friends in HK but you have two powerful enemies; the CCP and their business partner Donald J. Trump...
We already know Trump gives the CCP and its organs millions of dollars a year to make his clothing line...
Now, Trump's comments on the Tienanmen Square massacre from 1990 have been found;
When asked by Playboy writer Glenn Plaskin if he meant a "firm hand as in China", Mr Trump said the Chinese government almost blew it when students poured into Tiananmen Square.*
"Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," he said.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/resurfaced-trump-interview-tiananmen-square-205856881.html
Democracy activists were "vicious and horrible"....and the Communists were to be applauded for showing "strength"....
Its clear Trump dislikes democracy and is a proponent of tyranny and despotism - just like Xi and the other leader who helped get him elected....
JCosplay
@lincolnman well how do you explain the fact that he’s been doing this trade war with China? I mean seriously, about $100 billion a year in tariffs, and yet he’s a business partner because of millions of dollars that he gets from his clothing line? Seriously, that doesn’t add up.
WilliB
Kwatt:
But the CCP promised to respect HK's independent system until 2047. Did you forget that?
lincolnman
Deny reality all you want - won't make it go away or disappear...that only works in MAGA-world...
Thirty years ago, Donald Trump said that China had shown the "power of strength" when its troops massacred pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square the year before. "When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," Trump replied. "That shows you the power of strength.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/trump-calls-tiananmen-square-protests-riot-defends-calling-crackdown-strong-n536761
You denied this occurred - so, when may we get your apology for posting false information (fake news)?
lincolnman
Now that's a Trumpian level of spin - but you may want to re-read the information at both links....
"They" former were the democracy protesters. "They" latter was the CCP....
But explain to us why he sided with the Communist government in showing "strength" when it massacred the democracy movement?
Why did he side with the communists, not the democratic protesters?
lincolnman
Hmmmmm....I guess our Trump supporters can't answer a couple of simple questions...
Why did he side with the CCP in their show of "strength", i.e., murder of the democracy protesters in 1989?
Why does he even today continue to give millions to the CCP?
Not so hard - why continue to dodge them?
lincolnman

https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/donald-trump-may-want-to-increase-china-tariffs-yet-these-trump-products-are-made-in-china-2139111.html
Easy, see above...
So, try again...
lincolnman
It certainly adds up - who is paying for those tariffs? China? Nope....just ask the President's own Economic Adviser;
*But that is not how tariffs work. China's government and companies in China do not pay tariffs directly. Tariffs are a tax on imports. They are paid by U.S.-registered firms to U.S. customs for the goods they import into the United States. Importers often pass the costs of tariffs on to customers - manufacturers and consumers in the United States - by raising their prices. U.S. business executives and economists say U.S. consumers foot much of the bill through rising prices. * White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow has acknowledged that "both sides will suffer on this," contradicting the president.
https://jp.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-china-tariffs-explainer/who-pays-trumps-tariffs-china-or-u-s-customers-and-companies-idUSKCN1SR1UI
But the more important point that no Trump supporter has ever answered; why does he continue to give millions to Chinese companies to make his clothing line cheap, supporting the communists and cheating US workers out of jobs?
And why did he support the CCP in 1989 and call the democracy protesters "horrible and vicious"?
Strangerland
Deflect deflect deflect.
Because that furthers the argument.
As does feigning outrage.
lincolnman
Trump supporters here praise Trump for being tough on China - yet they deny the reality that today, at the Trumpstore.com website, you can purchase any number of products clearly marked as being made in China.
When you ask them to explain how Trump can be tough on China, when he is in business with them and gives them millions on clothing contracts, instead of US workers, they go silent...
Then they try to revise and re-interpret Trump's clear admiration for Communist China's violent crackdown on the pro-democracy protesters in 1989 - who he called "horrible and vicious".
Sorry fellas - won't work. It's in the record in black and white....but we understand you don't want to see it...
lincolnman
So I have to explain it again? Just read up - you'll get it....
Biden condemned the Tienanmen murders - Trump congratulated the Communists for their strength...
One more example that they try to revise and re-interpret Trump's clear admiration for Communist China's violent crackdown on the pro-democracy protesters in 1989 - who he called "horrible and vicious".
But the record won't allow them...
lincolnman
Ditto...
2.5 million more jobs? Where, in China? Must be expanding his Trump Collection clothing line....
Well, more millions for the CCP from their business partner....
Comrade Donald...who loves to crush those pesky democracy protesters...
Yrral
They ignore Trump
Pukey2
That's all very well, but do you think many Brits would be happy about this. They didn't vote for Brexit just to have more foreigners. I'm old enough to remember the last time there was a potential influx just after 1989, and one of the wacky ideas flouted was to put the HKers on some island in the UK. Talk about Dejima. With the recent anti-Chinese sentiments shown everywhere because of the pandemic, especially in the UK, things will get worse. They can fly the Union Jack or colonial flag all they like, but some HKers aren't aware of the level of racism in UK.

Trump:
Trump showing envy of the Chinese show of power and strength.
Blacklabel
this issue has NOTHING to do with Donald Trump. This is the anniversary of Tiananmen and about the brave protesters in HK who are defying the CCP backed police to have their voices heard, maybe for the last time.
Not about any dumb neckties.
Can I make myself any more clear?
Peter Wright
Bravo brave Hong Kong people. Never give up. Communist despotic tyranny must be condemned by whole world (may be except North Korea)
kwatt
Do you really believe China promises what it said to promise? China NEVER. It always changes that.

It is very sad to see democracy and freedom disappear, anywhere in the world. I am hoping that we kick the Big Orange out of office before things get worse over here.
WilliB
lincoln
Yes, that is how tariffs work. You did not know that?? And what is the point of explaining something that is obvious?
Can you spare us this constant childish drone about Trumps supposed magnificient clothing line? It is really getting boring. Nobody forces you to buy a Trump necktie, so don´t do it.
WilliB
lincolnman:
He said "They" (i.e. the Chinese government were "vicious and horrible" and "put the uprising down with strength".
Good grief, read your own quotes!
Blacklabel
(1) He didnt. (2) He doesnt.
Easy. You dont get to ask why until you prove what you asked is actually true, or relevant.
Blacklabel
He said it was a show of strength, which is was. I see no praise for it. Just a discussion of fact.
The Ivanka products dont care. The shirts and ties, those were Macys collection made prior to 2015. and are irrelevant to the anniversary of Tiananmen and the relationship between China and Hong Kong. Thats not Trump related.
Blacklabel
Yes, strength is a great attribute to have. He didnt praise what they did, simply noted they reacted with strength to put it down.
Seems you would be able to see "vicious" and "horrible" right before that and realize he isnt praising it.
Blacklabel
what "failed" action has Trump made that relates to Hong Kong marking the anniversary by defying a police ban? Your only intention is to try to figure some way, any way, to make a negative comment about Trump in every single topic. Even when he isnt relevant at all.
Sorry if people dont want to talk about your buddy's necktie narrative from the early 2010s. That should be deflected from because its not relevant to this topic.
Zaphod
lincolnman:
What do Trumps stupid neckties have to do with anything? And where do you get the idea from that some campaign souvenirs amount to "millions"?
In real world, Trump signed off on selling fighter jets to Taiwan. Tell us that dogdy Joe Biden would have the guts to do that.
Read your source again. The "horrible and vicious" refers to the actions of the Chinese government. Good grief, does one really have to explain that.
Zaphod
kwatt:
I do not believe that, but at the time a lot of people believed that, including the British and US governments and the WTO, which admitted China under the same false belief. We are talking 1994 now, a very different time and long before Winnie Puh.
Blacklabel
It’s not unusual to have to have a conversation here to explain every detail.
Tomorrow is gonna be explaining why Trump creating 2.5 million jobs in the USA for May (when an 8 million loss was projected by “experts”) is a great thing not another Trump “failure”.
kwatt
Didn't you forget UK officially returned Hong Kong to PRC in 1997. That's why Hong Kong belongs to PRC. Those who don't agree to PRC better go out of there.
Blacklabel
cant even talk about China or Hong Kong without a constant barrage of Trump, Trump and talking about neckties that have not been made in China since at least 5 years ago.
Can there be any conversation by liberals about any topic in the entire world that doesnt integrate Trump into it?
kwatt
Hong Kong belongs to PRC whatever, and 100% in 2047. Those who don't agree to PRC better immigrate to Britain or other countries that welcome them very soon. Hong Kong will never be a freedom city state.
WilliB
He did not. Stop posting fake news.

Lots of White people are the last people, the people of Hong Kong, should look for support, with their anti Chinese racism based on the Coronavirus
