In fairness, we should keep in mind that not everybody in mainland China has internalized the CCP brainwashing. Remember Tiennanmen Square? The anniversary is on June 3. Lets see if the HK government allows commemoration events this year.

The laws in the US against disrespecting the national flag also strike me as absurd. 

There are no laws in the US against disrespecting the American flag. Attempts to do so were blocked by the Supreme Court. Many cultural elites extoll the virtues of disrespecting the flag and other symbols of national pride. Disrespecting the Koran or Allah on the other hand will lead to an avalanche of opprobrium.

I never understood the point of national anthems. They're either total dirges, like Japan's or the UK's, or ridiculously jaunty, like most of Latin America's. If there was a law in the UK about disrespecting the national anthem I would have been in jail a long time ago, along with many others. The laws in the US against disrespecting the national flag also strike me as absurd. If you've got to legislate against people disrespecting your flag, then you've lost the battle already. Countries like China never seem to understand that.
