I am an Elizabethan, she was the only monarch I have known.

racist attitudes of the British media toward the biracial American actress.

Utter codswallop, no one gives a toss for her being biracial, it is her personal behaviour and entitled attitude that has got right up peoples nose.

Yet another second rate hatchet job dressed up as reportage. Bad show all round.

No doubt Charles will do his best to fulfil a difficult role, though he has a hard act to follow.

What's the Charles era called?

A tough one. Even calling him "The King" will be problematic, as people will automatically assume the reference is Elvis Presley.

The previous British monarchs named Charles, had their reigns named Carolean (sometimes called the Caroline) eras.

I disagree that the football and other sports events have been canceled today. They could have gone ahead with a one-minute silence.

As the second Elizabethan Age came to a close,

The first, Elizabeth I was not a Windsor.

House of Windsor started in 1917. There have been five British monarchs of the House of Windsor since then: George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II, and Charles III.

The current head of the house is the monarch of fifteen sovereign states. These are the United Kingdom (where they are based), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. As well as these separate monarchies, there are also three Crown dependencies, fourteen British Overseas Territories, and two small associated states of New Zealand: the Cook Islands and Niue.

Charles stated he will reduce the size of the active members of the royal family themselves and William and Kate. Princess Anne. Prince Edward and his wife.

Honestly confounded by the adoration of a monarch. A long bygone relic of another age. Particularly for those that are not English.

She was someone's mom, grandmother, etc., for those people, my condolences, for everyone else I am truly scratching my head as to why anyone cares.

He's just completed the world's longest apprenticeship.

Yep, it's the death of all institutions, one by one, until all that will remain is a kind of bladerunner-like dystopian metaverse where everyone will be happy and own nothing.

The majority of Brits have respect for the Institution of the Monarch and will support Charles in his role as king. The popularity rate was going down but the death of the queen will give it a big boost.

Service to whom? is the question and thanks @ wallace for originally posting the link.

The people of the Commonwealth have undoubtedly performed exemplary lucrative service to the Crown.

King Charles, in first address, vows 'lifelong service'

Seems, British people hope that Charles will abdicate sooner and alive to let his son succeed the throne. The reign doesn't have to be a lifetime as we know about the case of King Edward VIII.

In the Queen’s Christmas address to the British people and Commonwealth in 2000, she sought to “reflect more directly and more personally” on the source of the Millennium celebrations that year.

“Christmas is the traditional, if not the actual, birthday of a man who was destined to change the course of our history. And today we are celebrating the fact that Jesus Christ was born two thousand years ago; this is the true Millennium anniversary,” she reminded millions of viewers and listeners, adding that “the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life.”

Queen Elizabeth II said her sense of “personal accountability before God” underpinned her entire life.

“On 21 April 1947, on her 21st birthday, Princess Elizabeth said, ‘I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service. ’”

Charles has some mighty large shoes to fill!

Mr Kipling

I am no supporter of a monarch but is it the institution you are against or the fact that the House of Windsor had foreigners?

Prince William does not want to become king while his children are young.

Those great benefactors of humanity, the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Where would Western Civilization be without them?

That'll be lifelong service to promoting arms sales to brutally repressive Middle Eastern absolute monarchies then.

Not that his mother was ever wont to refuse gifts from autocratic rulers of oil-rich countries either.

King Charles will no longer require his passport or driving license.

I’ve only seen personally him three times, but if you believe in auras, it wasn’t good.

he is double faced in the opinion of his critics, interfering in politics, exploiting poor people via real estate and excepting suitcases with millions of dollars in cash from dodgy people.

but he is King, so he is my boss. Luckily I’m not a fox, he enjoys fox hunting.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

I wonder if the Brits public opinion of the monarchy could take a sudden unfavourable shift under his reign

He isn’t as well regarded as his mother. More than a few were talking about how William as king would be better for the image of the family. He’s done a pretty good job getting closer to the plebs by appearing on footy podcasts and stuff like that.

To be honest, I don’t think it will be enough to threaten the continuation of this institution but it’s certainly lost its best player.

King Charles, in first address, vows 'lifelong service':

Lifelong service? Laudable. Hope so.

If the rule applicable to King Edward VIII (who abdicated within a year) applies to King Charles III, he may not last more than a year.

Of course, rule can always be changed..

What kind of service is to be expected?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Humble opinion, King Charles III speech to the nation is empathetic/compassionate to public/peoples genuine feelings loss of Queen Elizabeth II, seventy year reign.

Most off all the King displayed dignity.

It is perfectly reasonable to suggest whether King Charles III could replace Queen Elizabeth II, after such duty and service. However I believe King Charles III has shown he is more than capable and disserves the nation trust and support.

Bah people used to like the Queen mother more than the Queen. Public affection will grow for Charles I imagine.

Good luck to him he seems a decent, principled and hard-working man, extremely well prepared for the role.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Charles’ speech was very good, hit the rights notes. I don’t think this is the end of the monarchy, Charles has indicated previously he wants to change it and reduce the number of members, which will be popular. He will not abdicate, there is no tradition of abdication in the country (Nazi EdwardVIII and his dodgy missus were gratefully shown the door) and the royals loathe the idea.

God Save The King!

@BigYen: Excellent and pithy summary. I'm afraid people are clueless about history and don't realise how lucky we are to have a royal family of such conscientiousness and dutifulness, despite all the scandals. Things are WAY better than during most of our history. The monarchy almost collapsed after Prince Albert died, and it was only really thanks to the genius Disraeli that it survived.

Onwards and Upwards! God Save The King!

What's really struck me as a British expat is the sincere condolences from non Brits to me personally for the Queen's death. Whilst it is almost cute I don't personally feel anything other than a huge page in history being turnedin my relatively short life thus far. Hopefully a new king can lift morale in the UK it's in a pretty dire place right now. All positive thoughts to all :)

I'd just come of age when the Queen's mother dies but everyone seemed to love her although I was already living abroad. My point was that with time people came to like the Queen at lot more. I'm guessing it will be the same with Charles.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Since the announcement of the queen's death, many tens of thousands of people have gone to Buckingham Palace, and all the other castles throughout the land to bring flowers and express condolences.

The popularity rate is decreasing but this will give it an enormous boost over the next year.

After more than seven decades of my life, I can understand a thing or two. I don't support the monarch but the majority of Brits do. I don't need to make a survey.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The majority of brits have respect for the institution of the monarch

That's incorrect because there's so many British that couldn't care less about the royals to even be part of the survey evaluation

I don’t know how you know this. The polls are not perfect but are the best we have to go on regarding issues like this, and they show a majority in favour of keeping the monarchy - I don’t know if this perfectly equates to respect.

I’m in the minority by the way.

One thing that can skew your view is which part of the UK you are from. I’m from Liverpool where anti-monarchy feelings are quite high.

Which part of the UK are you from mate?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

the kings of rock n roll in the UK are the Beatles

Elvis is perhaps most popular of all in the UK, where he is known as "The King." This could cause a lot of confusion.
