So sad, and people cannot use judgment by staying home like they do for Corona.

There’s no doubt brutal regimes like China and Russia will stand behind the murderers.

What will the rest of the civilized world do???

As Myanmar’s military celebrated

The military celebrated the death of the bits of democracy Myanmar had had. As authoritarian states gain even greater power around the globe, expect more nastiness like what's happening in Myanmar.

I wonder if the unnamed sources are as reliable as the Syrian observatory for Human rights.

One has nothing to do with the other. The US is committing a war crime in Syria, yes. The junta in Myanmar are murderous criminals that are destroying a functioning and blooming democracy. Some people need to take off their anti-America, anti-Russia, anti-China glasses and see that the world is a complicated place, and each situation needs to be judged on its own.

Er...you are missing three other countries.

it is very sad. I was in Burma two years ago. Very friendly, hard working people.

the situation is not looking good there unfortunately. The armed rebel groups are making an alliance, so civil war is on the horizon. Although the side with biggest guns will win, like in Sri Lanka, it is the people who will suffer. Sad.

Any government that gives aid and succor to the fascist military regime should be severely sanctioned and their economies made to scream. China should already be in the crosshairs and Japan put on notice. With the very real threat of climate change, global warming and the looming destruction of our planet's bio-diversity, we humans must first clean out the stables of corruption, recover the many trillions in dirty money hidden away in secret bank accounts and put our political houses in democratic order, or else...

Nothing, sadly

Japan is particularly inconvenienced.

These protestors must get back to work.

Still don’t understand how young Burmese security forces can shoot their families, uncles aunties, cousins, brothers, sisters. It’s obvious the Military takeover is not welcome, but they are intent on power even if it involves killing those they want power over? At the end of the day a group of old men in uniform will claim success as they stand over a country splattered with dead.

Should we really believe reports are based almost entirely on information from local media funded by the US government through theNational Endowment for Democracy (NED) - outlets like The Irrawaddy, Mizzama, DVB (Democratic Voice of Burma), as well as "monitoring groups" like the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners ?

We shouldn't be taking the opposition sides reports at face value anymore than we should believe governments reports. The truth will probably lie somewhere in between.

Doesn’t the US President have the responsibility to do something about this to help these people?

Maybe if Trump hadn't kicked the Myanmar problem down to the next administration, this problem wouldn't be happening.

so the previous President was responsible for this “problem” but the the current one is not?

sounds like we agree the US President has some responsibility here. So what’s the plan?

It feels awful and painful to see the people suffer like this at the hands of thugs without conscience or care. It’s a strikingly simple case of corruption and self interest of the powerful in control of the powerless. I fully support the anti-coup movement. I fully denounce the military’s actions and abuse of power.

I think the best international response to this coup is to block all financial accounts of all military generals and their families and in laws, friends and allies. That will starve the country generals and military brass.

So far all that this administration has done is ignore crisis and get publicly humiliated by all the “scary” people and governments of the world.

any plan to “govern” outside of signing pieces of paper at a desk? Is there even a “Biden-Harris foreign policy” in existence that tells us what should be done for the people of Myanmar?

"Muh Trump" again. Don't you people ever take responsibility for anything?

The military has a shot-to-kill policy. Yesterday a five-year-old was killed.

Sad.

The military claims it seized power because November’s elections, won in a landslide by the party of Aung San Suu Kyi, were fraudulent. The country’s election commission has dismissed that claim."

Sounds like what Mike Flynn and Roger Stone had in mind for the States on January 6...

Absolutely - and they were just the minions of the head insurrectionist - the ex-President charged with protecting our democracy...

Just like with Putin, Xi, Kim, and MBS, Trump admires these autocrats and tyrants...

He's disappointed his supporters didn't bring more guns on Jan 6th...though they did bring a rope for Mike Pence...

Actually there is rather a lot Japan could do as it’s economic ties are deeper than is widely known.

It's horrendous that China and Russia support such a murderous regime. Anything which is pro-democracy must go in their eyes. Unarmed and peaceful protesters being massacred by heavily armed soldiers. It's so wrong. The rest of the civilized world must unite and take a stand together in condemning this.

Killing five years old and pregnant woman are so brutal, unnessary and inhumane. It has risen from the all levels of violence against unarmed civilians. It has broken all levels of atroctities commited from terrorists by Myanmar professional army.

Even in the real battle, soldiers have to refrain from killling pregnant women and childern.

No wonder Myanmar people have bitterness and deep hatred toward military who are blood thristy criminals.

During 16th century, Japanese Samurai can kill the peasant on the spot without any reason. Peasant could not dare to have eye contact with the proud warrior. Losing heads for offending Samurais were normal.

Myanmar is still same as medieval era of Japan which Samurais with guns are bullying, dominating and slaughtering innocent civilians. Injustices !

I mean, that was what you guys said about Trump and North Korea. I'm just playing by your rules.

So how do you justify Trump kicking this down the road to the next administration? Pretty pathetic innit.

Meet with the leaders of the junta in Singapore.

He could probably get some great photo ops done!

And maybe some love letters to follow. That would be glorioius. And satisfy the right of course, making it a bipartisan solution!

Even with ASSK they were a totalitarian dictatorship. She was their stooge muppet and went along with their genocide against the Rossignya, who have been under an apartheid since 1962. It's the same crap, newer butts.

Whatever has changed in ex-Burma / now Myanmar, it's the same old crap.

To say the least. Nothing is sacred to these jerks. Midnight Oil said it in 1990, 'We feed an economy with blood on its hands'. It's time for the UN to completely embargo this land and make it hurt for them!

sounds like we agree the US President has some responsibility here.

Wait, you guys blamed all the responsibility on North Korea on the president's before Trump.

So no, we clearly don't agree the US president has some responsibility. You've been very clear on your opinion that these problems are the exclusive responsibility of the president who came before.

The military saw the shining example set by Trump as to how you can refuse to accept the results of a fair election, but in their case the Tatmadaw are taking it to the logical bloody conclusion.

Their enemy is the Rohingya, the Karens, all the ordinary people of Myanmar, anyone who gets in the way of the self-centered military ruling elite.
