In 1962, the world had JFK to look to to.
In 2017, the world has Donald Trump to look to. I just hope the advice of Fox and Friends is wise and sound. Any suggestions on Twitter could be helpful too.
Wallace Fred
Lol the early 2000s called. They want the Iraq rhetoric back.
kazetsukai
The scenario is entirely different from Cuba.
The environment, situation and circumstances are totally different and misleading.
Trump is being "forced" and "hemmed" in by both international powers such as China and Russia using K Korea as "distraction" for their covert activities, while the US government both official and non-official are trying to undermine Trump. For all we know US "covert" groups are working with China and even Russia to discredit and force replacement of Trump as they are doing in the Middle East, Africa and Mediterranean with the Muslim crisis in EU.
For all we know it is a "distraction" funded by China and the Muslim countries and to "force" a limited war which will distract from covert actions elsewhere. And.., as a result "discredit" Trump and the US, making US the enemy of the world, because Trump dared to make US great again.
The problem is "conspiracy" is "real" and happening all the time. The key is for US to be "united" and not "divided" as it is being "designed" by both internal and external powers.
One is social-economic, and the other is social-religious group trying to undermine what has kept USA the world leader.
Lizz
Trump has "basically drawn a red line" by saying Pyongyang can't ever have a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the U.S., he said.
They likely already have that and may have tested it so I think Trump is saying that shouldn't make any more serious threats.
CrazyJoe
Is there someone, anyone...Kelly, Mattis, Congress, the Supreme Court, his wife...that can tell this idiot to shut the **** up!!
bass4funk
Boy, I could jump all over that one. LOL
Anyway, different world, different times and JFK was no Saint.
Where do you get this crap Fox and Friends, if he watches it, so what? Hillary had CNN and Obama had msnbc, let these presidents watch what they want, doesn't bother me, doesn't hurt my pocket book.
I think the left needs to seriously do that. The presidents top military advisers are studying the situation if great detail and in the meantime, Trump should keep the NoKos on their toes and off balance, brilliant.
ChinhDao
Kim Jong-un is unpredictable and a true war criminal, in the strictest sense. Nevertheless, there are some missing links in this war scare. A majority of silent Americans have paid more attention to Special Counselor Mueller's investigation into the Russian probe.
Jimizo
I didn't say he was a saint. I just think someone like him would be preferable in this situation to a petulant, ignorant, man-child with bad approval ratings.
Give me a womanizer every time over this fart-lighting act.
bass4funk
As if the approval ratings are the fundamental building blocks for making a good president. Trump shouldn't care either way what the MSM thinks, they never liked him, so why worry, I wouldn't.
Kennedy or Clinton, perhaps?
takeda.shingen.1991@gmail.com
Sounds like a great way to piss off party rank and file, meaning good luck passing legislation. Also, a real good way to get impeached. Yeah,,, Trump's cowboy style ain't doing much.
Jimizo
Trump could see a dramatic military act as a way of improving his terrible approval ratings. It wouldn't be the first time a leader has tried to pull a stunt like this.
Oh, yes. Particularly Clinton. A highly intelligent man who also happened to be the most gifted politician of our times. He's the kind of person you need in situations like this. His womanizing is irrelevant, as is Trump's less than saintly record with women.
What's needed here is knowledge, know how and a calm mind. To say Trump has these qualities would be enough to make a child ROFL.
bass4funk
Oh, poo! The obstrutionist Democrats had Trump in their crosshairs since the day he was inaugurated, so why should he care now, makes no sense.
Except keeping the NK on notice. Being stern and unpredictable helps. Kudos!
gelendestrasse
I would rather think that if NK fires missiles over Japan and towards Guam I would expect that, if the anti-missile systems work well they are going to be used. BBC seems to agree that China won't have much interest in helping wind down the situation. Which is a problem because that makes it more likely that the situation will escalate. Glad my niece didn't get that job on Guam!
noriyosan73
Ask Ms. Non-slim Kim who is bereft of reasoning. There have been many cultures that have sacrificed every family in hopes of dominating the known world. Jones' Town is a good example. Non-slim Kim is just another in the dynasty philosophy of life. The world was "one minute to destruction in the 60s and 70s. It is now "30 seconds to destruction."
theeastisred
Trump descends to Kim's level.
takeda.shingen.1991@gmail.com
Don't blame this on the minority party now. Lol
Cuz as his approval ratings continue to plummit, and they will, congress will be less willing to work with him. So, he's going to have a hard time getting bills passed.
And if his ratings get low enough the GOP will absolutely eat their own. Great way to get impeached, GOP won't stick their necks out for unpopular, inept leadership.
Kaerimashita
Indeed. NK should launch missiles against Guam to teach DT a lesson. Makes perfect sense.
dcog9065
For a madman, Kim Jong Un does have a point when he says Trump is a moron full of s**t who only responds to force.
Now the media is reporting that NK will launch future missile tests into waters off Guam. Trump's incompetence and astonishing stupidity has just directly put America as a prime target and endangered the national security of the country. There is no way back for him now
bass4funk
Not with his supporters, it's been pretty consistent
Don't be too sure, you guys are bad at predicting things historically, that's why it's important to have a witch hunt in order to someway, somehow dislodge the president. Again, more tissue, bad for the environment.
Let's just see where this goes, Trump should get right in Kim's face, if he doesn't back down if it is perceived that he's going to launch an attack, that's the end of the nation.
FizzBit
if they work, exactly. We might find out if Kim, or whoever is calling the shots over there, decides to strike first.
The below is the direct translation from NK's website, the same NK official information used here but left out of this and other news releases, but not all.
lucabrasi
About a hundred years ago, at the start of the Great War, both sides were saying "It'll be over by Christmas."
And when more cautious voices pointed out that human conflict was unpredictable, and fate played tricks , they were attacked as unpatriotic and lacking understanding regarding the sophistication of modern warfare.
What's changed?
stormcrow
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's a shame that it's gone this far. The U.S. didn't allow the Cubans to have nukes on their island in order to maintain peace in its hemisphere. China has done the opposite by allowing the N. Koreans to do this. Just as JFK did with the Cubans, China should have been sealed up N. Korea tighter than a drum years ago with nothing permitted to go in or out of that country. Now it's too late and that's a shame.
I certainly don't want to see a war and Trump doesn't come to mind when I think of the phrase let cooler heads prevail. He is a loud-mouth and should tone it down. Trump, although he's made a problem worse by his words and actions, is not the cause of this problem. He doesn't sound all that different from Kim Jung Un or Saddam Hussein. I'm waiting to hear the Trump say this will be the mother of all battles. Not good, not good. At the same time, and this is the really scary part, as the president of the U.S., Trump is also the Commander in Chief. This is where his true power lies. Hopefully, Mattis and the other sounder heads in his cabinet will be able to keep him reined in.
We all desire and hope for peace, but how will future generations benefit from such an agreement? Nuclear proliferation becomes far more problematic. The question of Will nuclear terror ever occur? changes more increasingly to When and where will nuclear terror occur? In a crazy way, it almost makes sense for the U.S. to just give the North Koreans the technology so that they can at least fire their missiles accurately to prevent a future accident.
It's a mess either way. One thing's for sure, China's failed in its duty to take care of its neighborhood.
my 2 cents
lucabrasi
@stormcrow
Well said. But don't forget the missiles were Soviet, not Cuban.
If now, they were Chinese, and not North Korean, we wouldn't be in this mess....
SuperLib
Trump should just keep moving military hardware into the area, thus forcing China's hand.
bass4funk
Trump can't do that unilaterally. Mattis and the other generals will decide that.
stormcrow
@lucabrasi
That's true. Nothing is ever black and white, is it?
Still, China now has a next door neighbor armed with nukes whereas the U.S. doesn't.
Luddite
Even a deranged meglomaniac like Fatboy knows Trump is an idiot.
Blacklabel
And still the best solution here is to call Trump some more names and blame him for responding that it is unacceptable for Kim to launch missiles at us and he will pay a price if he does.
All you snarky people, what would you have Trump do about a country that keeps firing missiles all over the place? Just ignore him and hope someone else deals with it when you know they wont, ala Obama for 8 years?
North Korea will do nothing but talk and at some point we can all see that direct, forceful language toward them is all that is left once diplomacy has failed. If they attempt any future launch, it will have to be dealt with militarily as there is nothing else left to do. Red lines in the sand have to mean something.
bass4funk
Yeah, but with attitude and backbone! Kudos!
Jimizo
His hyperbole may be quite fun for his supporters but an expression like 'fire and fury....like the world has never seen' is idiotic and dangerous. The world has already seen Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Dresden. What exactly does Trump have in mind?
It seems the North Koreans have got wind that Trump is an inarticulate, trash -talking, grandstanding loudmouth, but he's better to stay away from inflammatory rhetoric like this. Keep that kind of talk for rallies or preening tweets.
onedragon
Because the host countries Government wants them there. Please study a little about the history of the world.
8T
Maybe you should go to Washington and personally tell him.
goldorak
What a poor choice of words! Seriously, why the need to constantly flex their muscles, belittle others and tell/warn us they (the us) could destroy our countries if they really wanted to? How are we the others supposed to feel about that? Shut up and accept we will always be at the us' mercy?
That's a warning to the world, not NK. And some ppl still wonder why Trump's rhetoric makes the world an even more unstable place.
plasticmonkey
Wow. So you admit Trump is an idiot, but being an idiot as president is acceptable, so long as he has "attitude and backbone". Can you point to any historical precedent where this has worked out well?
gcbel
How'd that work out?
I think serial name-caller Donald and Trump supporters are poorly placed to whine about name calling. Also, liar, incompetent are more statements of fact about the guy's performance than name calling really.
What would we have him do? Act like he's the President of the United States for once. Not blurt out whatever nonsensical machismo phrase pops in his mind. Understand the issue and deal with it with a modicum of competence. Not allow the DPRK to bilateralize the issue. Articulate an intelligent alternative to "Strategic patience", or containment, if he has one. So far he's failed across the board.
No reason for us to be PC in the face of this gross incompetence.
Toasted Heretic
No progress in anything. In other words - he lied. Again.
A sensible voice, for a change.
Oh dear.
And stupid. Just like the DPRK; mixed messages are being sent out. The Jets and the Sharks are looking to rumble as the audience goes wild with anticipation.
Toasted Heretic
Battle of the Blackwater? Perhaps he has some wildfire handy...
bass4funk
For him and to get his attention, I sure hope so.
To protect the US.
You can't become a Billionaire by being inarticulate.
I disagree, I think he hasn't gone far enough actually.
Typical libs twisting words, that's why they constantly get things wrong, tissue prices are rising.
WWI, WWII, Iraq getting rid of Saddam, getting Noriega, Kosovo
Chop Chop
If the US closed it's base in South Korea and moved all it's equipment and troops back home this would all end.
And then, N. Korean will invade S. Korea within minutes.
plasticmonkey
Tissue prices are irrelevant to this discussion, whether or not you can substantiate that claim. But to address your accusation of "libs twisting words", why don't we break down the exchange line by line:
Which part of that discourse is "twisting"?
I have always put a premium on reasonable discourse, and I think this is even more important when we have a despotic and dangerous political system in North Korea that is unable to change, an American president who tunes out when confronted with information that is more than half a page in length, and his followers who are averse to considering the facts that are in front of us all.
Blacklabel
So the governor of Guam agrees with both Trump's strong words of fire and fury as well as his actions. Seeing as he is in charge of where is going to be shot at and agrees, Trump wins again.
takeda.shingen.1991@gmail.com
Ur so right. How does he keep doing it? 7 months in and already the best president in the history of the wold. Trump is so smart, best brains ever
Jimizo
A strange mix of the good, the bad and the ugly there.
Then again, as long as someone shows attitude and backbone, the end result is irrelevant. It seems even idiots can be excused as long as they display attitude and backbone on the right.
Trump certainly has a loyal base there.
SuperLib
It's Dear Leader East vs Dear Leader West.
It would actually be kind of funny to lock both of their supporters in a room and see what happens.
"Our dear leader has 10 holes-in-one!"
"Oh really, well our dear leader is always winning!"
bass4funk
You calling me a liberal, but don't worry, I understand the frustration of the left. Tissue sale on.
The left in their hatred and over exaggerations. Smh.
That depends on what you define as facts. There are facts and there are facts from the left loons and the MSM that carry a destroy Trump agenda, if that's the case, then of course none of us will see that as facts but more like indoctrination.
Hey, you guys had an idiot for 8 long tortuous years that was weak and afraid of making people feel bad, but allowing people like this little kid to get away with murder, close your eyes and count to ten, the bogeyman will go away when you open your eyes. Give me a break.
chisineko
To retreat and apologize to a bully, even a North Korean bully, only serves to encourage and invites intensified aggression. But of course people always get the treatment they really want.
bass4funk
You implied I was a liberal...whatever, doesn't matter. But take this down and for future references, "I'm not a liberal and will never be one."
gcbel
If that's so the governor of Guam is easily impressed. Presumably as he is "in charge of where is going to be shot at" he knows he'd better not contradict the thinnest-skinned president in US history.
Wins what, exactly? The right to brag that the governor of Guam doesn't appear to think Trump is loose canon?
I wonder if Trump has figured out what the nuclear triad is yet. He was clueless about it 18 months ago and now he's taking credit for modernizing our nuclear arsenal. Another lie.
bass4funk
It's not, unless you call someone that and they are not, the word in itself isn't mean, but the overall intent behind it is.
Thinnest skinned? When he's bombarded with personal attacks, sure, anyone would. I think the governor sees real strength in this president, so he doesn't need to feel fear.
bass4funk
I was talking about Trump and governors response to Trump and Kim. He knows Trump's got his back. Go Trump!
Blacklabel
No, the governor sees just like everyone else that the days of not dealing with this are no longer possible. so deal with it is what Trump is doing.
bass4funk
The last president was thin-skinned as well, so it's nothing new here.
Naw, I leave that for the left and they sure have enough of it to go around.
Blacklabel
Susan Rice just said we have to learn to tolerate a nuclear armed North Korea. Really? Probably need to tolerate unmasking too huh?
Once again this is proving the Trump is doing the right thing. I know this because of the names and certain groups of people who hate everything he does. By them hating him gives me all the more reason to support him.
bass4funk
That was exactly the problem with the last admin. and that's why people didn't want the Dems anymore, capitulation and weakness is the epicenter of the liberal heart.
I wholeheartedly agree!
Bingo!
OssanAmerica
"North Korea’s launch of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4, U.S. Independence Day, is a direct affront to the U.S. that was likely supported by Chinese technology and expertise. Indications of Chinese involvement include Chinese transport trucks used for multiple North Korean missiles, the biconic warhead design of the Hwasong-14, and other Chinese missile components. U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson are now publicly pointing the finger at China, and it’s about time."
https://www.forbes.com/sites/anderscorr/2017/07/05/chinese-involvement-in-north-koreas-nuclear-missile-program-from-warheads-to-trucks/#723fdffe6f2f
bass4funk
If we know they are going to start an attack, yes. If they launched a missile and it hit the US mainland or one of its territories. yes.
MeanRingo
If war does break out I hope that the legions of Trump supporters line up in droves at military offices across the US, or better yet, that military conscription is set along party lines. Nobody but the morons who voted for Trump should be put on the front lines of this one.
bass4funk
Some of us are already in the military, some of us served in the past and some might want to serve and what is your point? A bit illogical, even if someone went tomorrow and went to a recruiter office and enlisted doesn't that person would immediately be sent to the frontline in just a few weeks. You guys are a crack up! LOL
Blacklabel
Yet people who didn't care at all for Obama or his policies fought and died for their country. In fact his policies might have been directly responsible for their deaths. But they went and did it for their country and their loved ones without hesitation.
The military respects the position of Commander in Chief regardless of the person in it. I'm sure Trump supporter or not, people will do their jobs.
bass4funk
Actually, the majority of the military does support Trump. So in actuality, you are not wrong.
Himajin
Blacklabel, good post.
Ike-in-Tokyo-from-89
Before a US pullout arm the ROK forces with tactical nuclear weapons. Let Koreans decide their future.
mmwkdw
Assuming these Missiles land 35 Km away from Guam (+- 5Km), if they're carrying and detonate a Nuclear test payload - does that then count as attack upon US Soil ?
Matthew Harding
Being both American and living in Japan, I very much hope things calm down here between the North Korea and the U.S.
Truly there is no benefit for either side and it is very dangerous when protecting one's ego mixes with the availability of weapons.
Both of these leaders should consider all of the innocent who will be caught up in their childish dispute.
