Everyone pays the lockdown risk.

Why?

It is seniors that are at risk, not the young...

Seems a bit harsh. Why they didn't bother testing everyone during the AIDS epidemic? Far more people were killed.

1.7 million locked down because of 1 case....

Wait a minute! Didn't NZ proclaim it was virus-free twice before? What happened?

Its not about a virus its about control of the masses, simple !!

How come the idiots let the asses control the masses ?

Agenda 21 ?

Or ?

Wake up !

1 sick person does not a pandemic make !

Who let the virus in to begin with ? Was it the person in charge ? Not mentioning any names here though agenda adern.................

Lockdowns don’t work in the long run, as this shows.

NZ approach has always been to track and trace and isolate any and all cases that emerge. To date it has been highly successful. It probably is worth stating that Auckland is not at it's highest alert level and the rest of the country will carry on pretty much as normal. NZ is taking affirmative action when there has been just one community case. It is this approach to Covid that has enabled NZ to continue as a normal functioning country. Yes, there may be more outbreaks in the future - although vaccinations will reduce the chances - but as long as NZ continues down this path the country will be fine.

It seems to me that there are some people and posters who want to see NZ fail. To date, only a little more than 2,200 have been infected by Covid and just 26 have died, 16 of those in a home for elderly people with dementia. How is it going where you live?

Pretty good here. The government hasn't locked down 1.7 million people because of 1 case.

Human rights haven't taken a nosedive, and the mental health of our kids hasn't either.

Hows it going where you live?

@bob

What happened?

Most likely coronavirus was circulating among sheeps and a human caught it.

All mammals can catch COVID, including dogs, cats, lions, gorillas, tigers, sheeps, minks, etc.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/animal-news/here-s-why-denmark-culled-17-million-minks-now-plans-n1249610

Denmark culled 17 million minks in November in response to Covid-19 outbreaks at more than 200 mink farms. Now the country plans to dig up the dead animals after they started to rise out of their shallow graves.

Everyone pays the lockdown risk.

Why?

Social responsibility of course. Which is why NZ people are willing to do what needs to be done, and have been able to live a normal life while the rest of us live in a pandemic. A bit of short-term pain for a few, for the long-term benefit of both.

This is a concept that could never work in nations with people who are selfish and aren't willing to be socially responsible, like the US. The population is just way too selfish for it to ever work there. The feral individualness that results from unbridled capitalism by nature prevents actions that require social togetherness.

New Zealand: 0.52 deaths / 10,000 people

America: 15.94 deaths / 10,000 people

We can quantify the difference between social togetherness and Americanism as being 300x the number of deaths per capita.

Neither in New Zealand.

One stupid person, one arrogant individual has caused this.

I live in Auckland, in the danger zone.

My guess is Level 4 by this time next week.

The saddest thing to me is the photo heading the article. My very first thought was that it was of a strip mall in the southeastern US, maybe a hilly part of North Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington or Tennessee. That the mall is in New Zealand but could be anywhere in New Zealand, Australia, US, Canada and maybe elsewhere ought to have people scratching their chins and wondering how the world became so homogenized. I still shake my head recalling when I rode into the outskirts of Adelaide on my motorcycle and saw signs for a Toys-R-Us, a Denny's restaurant and signs for Century 21 Real Estate. Other than driving on the left I could have been driving down a street in Orange County California. I came 10,000 miles for that?

In the latest case the person visited a doctor on Friday and then went to the gym

This could have been contained much earlier. Almost all of the community spread so far as been because of people not following the directives to isolate if they were classified as a close contact or person of concern.

In this latest 'community case' the individual is from a household already with an infected member (although it is unlikely thy caught it from them) and part of a community with isolated cases. They developed symptoms on Tues. Waited until Friday to take a test, and then against doctors orders, went directy to the gym afterwards.

To add to that, on Saturday night there was a boxing match in Auckland with 12,000 people. Likewise, there was a concert in Hamilton (the next city from Auckland) attended by 25,000. Both events would have had a high proportion of the patronage from South Auckland.

This is going to end badly, as they new cases all involve the highly contagious Kent variant of the virus.

Actually 9000 less than in 2019 according to government statistics released about 3 days ago.

Human rights haven't taken a nosedive, and the mental health of our kids hasn't either.

Neither in New Zealand.

1.7 million locked down because of a single case is the definition of human rights abuses.

Unless you're one of those who set the bar incredibly low.

If you're referring to Arden, I agree.

The "Danger Zone"!

Imagine living in a city that big with a single case and calling it "The Danger Zone".

The biggest story we will study when this is all said and done is not the virus, but rather the realization that there are so many fellow humans amongst us who have no ability for critical thinking or coping skills.
