Incredible this small island nation cannot come up with a plan that stops COVID

Name ANY nation small or big that has "stopped" Covid. Exactly, you cant.

NZ has gone closer than anywhere else, and the odds are good they will continue to minimise deaths more than anwhere else. 26 deaths so far among 5 Million people is spectacular.

I'm not here to judge or criticize anybody, I'm just very interested with New Zealand being basically closed off to all, and tourism being one of its biggest economic factors, how are they doing economically? We hear about how lockdowns destroy economies and companies, but we haven't heard anything like that from New Zealand.

Most countries have some entry restrictions for tourists (e.g., Japan). But to answer your question (even though you are not criticising anyone), the NZ economy seems to be doing ok and it is growing. In relation to tourism, about 9 % of the GDP is generated through tourism of which less than half that percentage is incoming international tourism. Moreover, domestic tourism has filled some of the void left by the fall in international tourists. So the effect of closing the borders has not been that bad on the economy as a whole (but yes, some tourism operators are struggling)...

Regarding all the commenters piling on the New Zealand government and their prime minister. NZ has managed the pandemic much better than most other countries. For example, the NZ government has spent more on supporting businesses and with greater results during lockdowns than any other OECD economy. Moreover, the amount of time that the country has spent in total lockdown has been minimal and the lockdowns have been effective because of the high rates of popular support for these measures. People who are calling Ardern (you know who you are) seem to have some sort of gripe with center left leaning moderate parties and female leaders. Grow up.

New Zealand and Australia will be case studies in how not to manage a pandemic. Their leaders seem utterly clueless.

Almost no deaths, their people lived freely, and their economies did well.

Ouch, sounds like hell on earth!

See you guys in 10 years when your lockdowns end!

Why would they be doing lockdowns after they get vaccinated, and as new medicine is discovered to negate the virus? That would be silly.

Ardern triggers the hysterical right like nobody’s business.

Gives them a hiding in elections too.

What a combination.

Not a statistic you will see banded about in the MSM

I saw it in the MSM.

New Zealand takes this pandemic seriously.

Australia and New Zealand clueless??? definitely not but cautious yes and that's why they have had minimal deaths compared to every other country on the planet.

This will be the kick up the backside the Ardern government needed. They were woefully slow and negligent in rolling out the vaccine. It has come back to bite them. Every sign is though that the vaccine program is going to ramped up from here on.

This current cluster has hopefully been mostly contained, so it will be back to normal in the next week or two.

Keeping it pinned down as well as they have is commendable, and I would be surprised if they don't nip this in the bud as well as can be hoped. They are one of VERY few countries that had near normal operations in recent months, and the only major one that has. The others are basically all extremely small pacific islands.

I do not understand the veritable glee some people are exhibiting over this. Do you WANT everywhere to fail? Or only countries leadership that disagrees with your politics? I legitimately can't wrap my mind around being excited to see an increase in viral cases anywhere.

Most countries still restrict travel and those who open up too fast without taking into account of Delta are already suffering.

Tonga. Kiribati. Micronesia. Tuvalu. Nauru.

For your sake (and people who have to deal with you in day to day life) I hope you were joking.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Wait minute. Is this a joke?

Wasn't it just yesterday Ardern was doing victory lap number 5?

Oh well, 6th time a charm!

Nowhere will be safe.

But its vaccine rollout has been less stellar, with only around 20 percent of the population fully inoculated.

Not a statistic you will see banded about in the MSM, particularly in the U.S where Saint Jacinda can do no wrong.

Express sister

Take a look at NZs neighbors You might learn something,

Why would they be doing lockdowns after they get vaccinated, and as new medicine is discovered to negate the virus? That would be silly.

I think they might be right about the 10 years.

You see, NZ has purchased more then enough to vaccinate everyone 10 times over and soon I think they will be vaccinated. The dilemma for NZ now comes with the Delta strain. Paranoia of these proportions leads me to believe that NZ very likely will not be vaccinating children and given that the existing vaccines may not be as effective against infections combined with treatments that heavily depend on initial inoculation and hospitalization timing might mean the people NZ is trying to protect with the lock-downs will die if they open up.

That woman is barking mad

New Zealand is continuing to pursue an elimination strategy aimed at wiping out the virus entirely.

The virus will still be infiltrating NZ one way or another when they have an election and this strategy they have doesn’t seem to make sense long term.

how are they doing economically?

That is absolutely the key long term question. New Zealand clearly did well in terms of preventing deaths in the short term, but the virus isn’t the only thing going on in this world. The economy does matter.

I see there is one dissenting voice coming out of New Zealand about the situation, no doubt there must be more:

Containerships continue to load and unload goods in New Zealand. The local economy continues mostly as normal. The only big difference is air travel.

With or without Covid there is a reckoning coming for tourism and industries tied to mass international air travel. The increasing carbon emissions are completely unsustainable. Even with the limited amount of air travel happening in 2021, we've already exceeded 2006 passenger levels. As unpopular as this idea might be, Carbon Passports are probably coming. You'll only be allowed to fly x number of miles every 5 years.
