Auckland back in lockdown

Good grief. How many jobs will be lost? Maybe this time some brave people will ignore the lockdown orders and keep their businesses open and the police won't arrest them.

@Alfie Noakes - I support Judith Collins (a woman) to be New Zealand's next PM. Pulling misogyny into it as you do, is a way to deflect from Ardern's shortcomings, and that is all. I don't support Ardern because she has performed poorly as PM, and is a Socialist.

Oh dear.

Firstly, I didn't mention misogyny, that was Luddite. Bit of a Freudian slip there, sport.

Secondly, on Monday there was a story about NZ on here which attracted many vehemently anti-Ardern comments from accounts that have expressed Trump-support and other far-right opinions in the past. When I asked why they hated her so much my post was deleted. It seems the other posts were deleted too, as parts of the thread make no sense now.

Thirdly, when I asked again today why the right-winger accounts here hate her so much the only reply was that she's a "socialist". In your posting history you called her a "far-left Marxist". The bizarre tautology "far-left Marxist" is an expression I've seen extremist Trump supporters use on here before.

This Judith Collins seems like an wannabe Thatcher/Trump style dirty politics operator. Very unappealing but that's your choice.

@Bobby Fizzicola Ardern was the president of the International Union of Socialist Youth! So I think it is safe to say she is a socialist.

Go Crusher!

You clearly have no understanding of what a socialist is, as no political party in NZ is socialist. Moreover, whilst it is your business who you support, supporting National sets you as soneone who likely thinks property investment is a great way to increase your wealth and is an aspirational millionaire. However, neoliberalism is yesterday's news, trickle down theory is a lie, and there is no empirical evidence that austerity (another favorite of conservative method to screw the poor) has any effect apart. National are going to be destroyed in the next election. Even National running scared and are trying to buy time by suggesting the election be moved to November. However, Judith Collins' reversion to dirty politics will backfire. This will be a catastrophe and although Collins probably did not want the leadership at this time (who would), she will have to carry the can for their destruction. Couldn't happen to a nicer person...

It's the second time this week the far-right nutters have piled on Jacinda Ardern. What's up with that? Is it because their leader Trump is being constantly exposed as a clueless, incoherent, criminal failure?

Some of them seem positively delighted at the virus outbreak, too.

It makes me wonder about their motivations.

@Alfie Noakes. The misogynists will deny it, but any woman who dares to go in the public eye will be targeted, a successful woman even more so.

@afie noakes

Seeing as I have no ties to the uk or us it would be presumptive to comment on politicians and national politics that only have a passing understanding of.

Whereas I do follow and am affected by nz politics.

Boris Johnson and the UK government response to covd-19 has been a shambolic catastrophe yet the crackpots don't attack him. Why could that be?

Wheres all the arden admiration now?

She’s awesome, has been a great leader, and still is.

Sorry, did I just destroy your narrative

If you think an egotistica, fearmonger of a politician who: spent the last few months exploiting the fear of corona, whilst doing nothing to improve the heath system.

Who was unable to run quarantine effectively, or humanly

Whose cabinet members broke the same draconian lockdown the general population lived under

If this is your idea of a great leader you clearly have low expectations.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

I respect this shut down, get on top of it quickly and so that it is kept short and sweet and people can move on with their lives.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

The lockdown is a perverse overreaction

I hope so, meaning the virus isn’t spreading again and people can get on with their lives, but who knows at this point...

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Either that, or the people will be calm, the virus will once again be contained, and the people can get back into normal life.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Four people and all from ONE family so the whole country pays for it? Why not just make the local area a level 2 and figure out quickly where those family members were and with whom they made contact with? An over reaction like this will quickly start panic and in time work against any efforts to control the spread of the virus if they keep screaming that the sky is falling.

The lockdown is a perverse overreaction however hopefully it gives them time to find the source of the infection and nip it in the bud. I don't think it is possible to keep doing this though whenever there is an outbreak. Russia has already registered a vaccine, so it is time to simply start living with the virus, vaccinate people and get on with life.

From news reports an effective track and trace system and procedure is in operation.

Assuming the four cases were within one family in South Auckland, have been successfully isolated, there is still a delay 72 hours requiring level 3 restriction protocols, defined as a “precautionary approach".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern states….

"We have had 102 days and it was easy to feel New Zealand was out of the woods. No country has gone as far as we did without having a resurgence. And because we were the only ones, we had to plan. And we have planned,"

There is evidence this may not be the case.  A perpetual cycle of resurgence is evident, followed by a whack and mole, stop and start 3-day, level 3 restrictions, accompanied by a country wide level 2 alert.

On the surface, to err on the side of caution, better to be safe than sorry, approach seems logical, however this is neither practical or sustainable.

New Zealand's successful fight against COVID-19 was hailed globally and the Pacific island nation of 5 million was seen as one of the safest places, as the pandemic raged globally.

COVID-19 is engaged in a perverse game of hide and seek, even residing on Pacific island nation of 5 million, there seems to be little means of containment.

Wheres all the arden admiration now?

why NZ has one of the lowest deaths and infections per capita in the world, while it may not be perfect ist far far better than many other countries

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Follow the Sweden and Denmark models.

what Sweden has the 6th highest deaths per capita in the world.

Denmark while much better is still about 50 times higher per capita than NZ.

So you want them to follow models which will see ar higher deaths in NZ lol

I live in Auckland. We have a warning system on our mobile phones. I was alerted at 10pm last night.

Our Prime Minister reacted Early & Hard, like last time. Auckland is now @ level 3, the rest of New Zealand @ level 2. This is for a 3 day period only, @ this stage.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

This isnt practical at all. NZ cannot hope to remain covid19 free.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

@reckless

Good to see the sun hasn't affected your powers of sarcasm

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Wheres all the arden admiration now?

Worried for my parents who have to now go through another period of stupid hysteria.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Permanent lockdown until there is a proven vaccine. Do NOT leave your home!

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Its been mishandled from the beginning by the muppet and her puppet, should have stopped in bound travel form the infected area in january and as for the self isolation BS that proved to be a total joke.

This goose has no clue and is not capable of running a bath let alone a country especially in a crisis which she created and wanted, she is all about the crisis, this crisis , that crisis, any crisis that is what adern is about , if you have seen any of her propaganda from pre her PM days you will understand Comrades.

She rules by crisis and spoke many times about it , its part of her play book.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Oh look, closing borders and keeping out foreigners doesn’t not stop the virus. Japan take note. The world is well past that stage now, local lockdowns when clusters are identified by extensive testing is the way to go now.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

There has been a massive cover up, and Ardern has engineered a lot of it for her own political gain.

Sounds like unsubstantiated rubbish.

4 ( +12 / -8 )

why would people turn on Ardern for?...how exactly is it the PM's fault?

3 ( +10 / -7 )

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12355759

Covid 19 coronavirus: Auckland in lockdown, rest of country in level 2 - Four cases of community transmission

this report is about christchurch, which is in the south island. and now auckland in the north island going into lockdown ?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

This is good timing for the opposition National Party a few weeks out from the election. They have a viable coalition partner in Act, and it won't take many of the 'team of 5 million' to turn on Ardern for them to win the election

0 ( +8 / -8 )

I suspect that it will eventually be traced back to somebody working at a managed facility, or border control.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

So with all the retirement homes (and all homes for that matter) locked down in NZ, how? Mask mandates or arrest in NZ, so how? Seems these two strategies don't work. Follow the Sweden and Denmark models.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

yep, 4 new covid cases, all from a single family and none of them have travelled overseas recently. They currently don't know the route of the infection, which is unsurprising since it was only discovered today.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

PM having an emergency news conference now so perhaps some community transmission has occurred. Will find out in a few minutes I guess.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

There has been a massive cover up, and Ardern has engineered a lot of it for her own political gain.

This current thing is probably the seasonal flu, but watch the backlash against Jacinda Ardern if the virus has escaped into the community.

-5 ( +9 / -14 )

In other news today from NZ , piles of documents surfaced in regarding the govts handling of the pandemic and all her ministers are under a gag order, either there is some sort of cover up or her cover has been uncovered .

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

Strange isnt it , just suddenly out of nowhere funnily enough after the adern govt was telling everyone to get masks and mentioning another country wide lock down in august in the lead up to the election.

In other words putting the fear back into everyone so she can be seen as the peoples savour and also control the media and the social conversation.

A vote for the muppet is a fools vote.

-8 ( +10 / -18 )

Local reports suggest it's probably just seasonal flu, nonetheless everyone is being tested for covid.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

And then suddenly there appears to have occurred a cluster. Out of the blue.
