Not all gloom: World leaders tout success at climate summit

On the summit's opening day Thursday, Biden pledged the U.S. will cut fossil fuel emissions as much as 52% by 2030. South Korea, Japan, Canada and South Africa also joined in specific new emissions efforts timed to the summit.

One shouldn't be obfuscated by the large percentages thrown around alone. 52% on face value may seem like a large number (and compared by what the last circus administration did - it is); however, it's not at all clear what this number actually means, and what's being used as the baseline to determine progress. The US is using estimates it made back in 2005 as the base year (meaning there's more pollution, so the effect is minimized), while other nations are using 1990 numbers (means the opposite - and is viewed as a more aggressive approach). The Devil is in the details, and it's those details is what's missing in determining how effective Biden's approach will or won't be. Also isn't discussed is how or if the US is going to start eliminating its fossil-fuel subsidies, which isn't all handouts to energy barons (a tiny percentage of it does go towards less fortunate for energy bill aid); however, the main issue is that a subsidy is simply corporate welfare/socialism from the US Government that gives fossil-fuel creators an unfair economic advantage over renewables.

If will have forced people to pay more in energy costs, increased poverty over what it otherwise would have been, increased deficits by trillions, cost tens of thousands of working class jobs, shifted trillions in American wealth to China making Communist China the largest global super power, and reduced overall living standards all for an essentially zero reduction in global average temperatures. He must be senile.

America's energy consumption is CO2 emissions at 79%. It will be a big blow to U.S. industries.

Whilst “correct” has a definitive objectivity in some contexts, using it to describe political decisions is totally subjective. Comedy is also entirely subjective so “clown show” could be applied to anything really.

It’s really everyone’s decision what they prefer, innit.

My opinion is that the last guy didn’t start any wars because he had a very competent group of handlers. Much like when you see a toddler grab a pair of scissors.

Early days to call whether Biden will start any wars. Pulling all the troops out of Afghanistan is a nice step in the right direction though, wouldn’t you agree?

Biden’s goal would represent a serious acceleration for his country, which so far has managed to cut carbon emissions about one percentage point per year since 2005.

It’s not all gloom because the climate region is hyping a purported problem that they don’t understand. When you look at the science it becomes clear that the problem isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. The predictions of gloom are based on models that haven’t improved at all despite decades of money being dumped into research.
