The U.S. military wrote to Iraq on Monday saying it would pull out of the country and would be repositioning forces over the next few days and weeks

If true, it seems strange. Are the US military at odds with their government?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Soleimini was due to meet the Iraqi Prime Minister the following day.

This guy wasn’t some holed in a cave terrorist. He was a Statesmen with diplomatic honors.

And he was killed in cold blood while he was hugging his friend by a bunch of cowards.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

I can see why donny has done what he did, but I think he's kicked over a hornets nest this time, and they are going to sting him, but unfortunately its the troops in the country that will have to take all of the flack from his act.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

LOL, instead of appeasing the terrorists this administration is showing them who’s boss. What a refreshing change from the Obama administration.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Iran's irascible reputation untanished, but I'm not sure being predictable is going to work for them, especially against un-predictable Trump.

Why are the anti-war people not celebrating the very, very significant de-escalation (formal withdraw of troops)? Too busy trying to be negative towards Trump by the look of it. LOL.

I am less restless now that we have a president willing to ignore the swamp (big corporates doing business with Iran that has for decades been dictating foreign policies, and the war machines are always ready to milk tax payers money.

Very straight forward clear message. USA will defence itself - succinctly, whether from state actors OR proxies.

...and withdraw of troops...

USA won't help those who don't want to help themselves.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

The withdraw 'should go ahead', because it will force 'other' foreign forces out too, or at least that should be the condition for withdrawal, ie per the Iraqi government vote 'all foreign' troops, which include Iranians and its proxies.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Let’s not forget that this was ordered by an impeached president.

Trump starts a war as a scheme to stay in office. Think about that. He would rather Americans die than face his own crimes.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Britain still has 400 troops in Iraq.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"I don't know what that letter is... We're trying to find out where that's coming from, what that is."

Send in....the clowns.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

This guy wasn’t some holed in a cave terrorist. He was a Statesmen with diplomatic honors.

And he was killed in cold blood while he was hugging his friend by a bunch of cowards.

Wow - the political Left loves those terrorist state officials. Soleimani was hugging his Iraqi buddy a guy who also gets his jollies by killing people with different political and religious beliefs. The only way to stop a serial killer is with force.

The US should move lock, stock, and barrel to the Kurdish region and let the Iraqi’s hand the rest over to the Iranians. Declare the state of Kurdistan and let the Kurds have a democratically led homeland providing bases for the US to keep Iran in check.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Britain still has 400 troops in Iraq.

The Iraqi vote was for all foreign troops, implying the coalition fighting ISIS, so that will include UK and Australian as well.

CNN, reported just minutes ago that 'reposition' of troops is confirmed, and instructions were issued. I'm guessing someone has decided the term 'withdraw' is a backdown, whereas what tgey're actually doing, moving troops out of Iraq (reposition) sounds more strategic.

Another day in the white house.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Crazy: Trump starts a war as a scheme to stay in office. Think about that. He would rather Americans die than face his own crimes.

What crimes - calling out Biden for undermining the law of the land by withholding legally appropriated funds to protest his criminal son?

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

The most interesting thing about this move is that Trump predicted Obama would do this just before the his second election so that he could be reelected for a second term. Obama didn't do it. However, Trump suspiciously attacks during his lowest moments most likely in hopes of starting a war to keep his post and get reelected.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Why are the anti-war people not celebrating the very, very significant de-escalation (formal withdraw of troops)? Too busy trying to be negative towards Trump by the look of it. LOL.

For the life of me I’m equally baffled by that one.

Bingo.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

The Iraqi MP vote is none binding. Trump wanted to bring the troops home but not from Iraq until he says, they pay for building the main military base. Sounds like Trump claiming the Mexicans will pay for his wall.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The Russians had their Afghanistan, forced into a humiliating retreat, Donny has given us an Iraq, another humiliating retreat!!

There are very few options for the US forces, Donny has put a target on their backs and the only way to avoid casualties is retreat, however humiliating it might be!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I seem to remember Reagan stating that US troops would remain in Lebanon after the misfortune at the marine base....

within two weeks they were gone.... tails tucked between legs.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

LOL, instead of appeasing the terrorists this administration is showing them who’s boss.

This administration is committing illegal acts of war and threatening the people of Iran and Iraq.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Brian Wheway The hornet's nest has been kick over for decades only now has the hornets bothered to fight back!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tehran crowds mourn commander

What they don't show are all the Iranians happy that this monster is dead.

The Russians had their Afghanistan, forced into a humiliating retreat, Donny has given us an Iraq, another humiliating retreat!!

LOLOLOL Trump didn't give us Iraq, Bush did. After that Obama gave us ISIS. After that Trump wiped out their caliphate.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

USA will defence itself - succinctly, whether from state actors OR proxies.

Assassinating the General and threatening Iran is not defence. The US have been meddling with Iran for decades and here we are, on the brink of possible global conflict.

Both these evil regimes need to drop the rhetoric and engage in mature dialogue.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

There are very few options for the US forces, Donny has put a target on their backs and the only way to avoid casualties is retreat, however humiliating it might be!

Well, actually the US military has a lot of options at the disposal, nothing that they can handle and if the Democrats want to support Soleimani and defend him and his killing it’s going to blowback right in their faces. But if Iran does strike back there is nothing that we can’t do in retaliation, nothing.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

But if Iran does strike back there is nothing that we can’t do in retaliation, nothing.

Generating confused and poorly sourced comment on the internet is effective retaliation?

Will Trumpists, who claim they are ready to retaliate, be signing up?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The US has been going after oil in the middle east since the 1940's and we need to give it up. Since the Anglo-American agreement that divided the oil fields between England and America. That agreement was ridiculous and was rejected by the countries in the middle east. America still thinks it has the rights to the oil there and continues to go after it.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

if the Democrats want to support Soleimani and defend him and his killing it’s going to blowback right in their face

Hate to break it to you, but Soleimani is dead, and the Democrats are not supporting his killing , they are looking at the reasons that lead to the killing.

its easy to sit at a keyboard and talk war, same as the commander in chief who has no problems asking others to fight, but bone spurred himself out of any danger!

Those who really care for the country don’t want soldiers to die, just to fulfill the political ambitions of a delusional maniac.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

ISIS pre-dated Obama. It's been around for over 20 years and was part of the Iraqi insurgency after the illegal invasion of that country. It grew because of a power vacuum in the region.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasdelbeccaro/2017/02/16/are-the-democrats-helping-isis-recruit/#51943bee26ff

Makes Sense....

Generating confused and poorly sourced comment on the internet is effective retaliation?

No, just stating the fact or will Germany or Portugal...or maybe the Dutch stop us.

Will Trumpists, who claim they are ready to retaliate, be signing up?

I’m sure there will be.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Hate to break it to you, but Soleimani is dead

Thank God!

, and the Democrats are not supporting his killing , they are looking at the reasons that lead to the killing.

Like he was maybe a good terrorist?

its easy to sit at a keyboard and talk war, same as the commander in chief who has no problems asking others to fight, but bone spurred himself out of any danger!

Yup.

Those who really care for the country don’t want soldiers to die, just to fulfill the political ambitions of a delusional maniac.

I don’t want soldiers to die, especially ours, but I don’t want the terrorists to live either.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Look at the Trumpers here - doing their daily pretzel twisting dance trying to defend the indefensible.

Fact: the 1991 Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War and now the War with Iran were all started by Republican Presidents - and all were NEOCONs.

Fact: Trump campaigned that he was the anti-NEOCON and that he would "bring the troops home", and "stop endless wars."...

Fact: Trump has deployed over 14K MORE US troops to the Middle East and is sending an additional 4K now.

Fact: NEOCONs are closely enmeshed with the US defense industry and profit greatly financially during periods of war.

By killing Sulemanei and starting ME War 3.0, Trump just proved he played all his supporters for suckers - he was a NEOCON hiding in plain sight. And if we could see his tax returns, we'd find out how much money he gets from the defense industry, just like Dick Cheney.

So how many Trumpers here voted for a NEOCON in 2016? Buyers remorse?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I don’t want soldiers to die, especially ours, but I don’t want the terrorists to live either.

One common trait among armchair warriors is that they want others to spill blood while being cowards in real life, just like their leader, cadet bonespurs.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Thank God!

Religion and war. Great combo there, fella.

No, just stating the fact or will Germany or Portugal...or maybe the Dutch stop us.

Maybe we will. Or maybe we'll support restraint and strengthen peaceful ties with the Iranian people.

Trying?? What?

Fact: the 1991 Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War and now the War with Iran were all started by Republican Presidents - and all were NEOCONs.

Fact: Democrats funded them.

Fact: Trump campaigned that he was the anti-NEOCON and that he would "bring the troops home", and "stop endless wars."...

Fact: That was until an American was killed and our embassy attacked. Until his predecessor, he enforced his red line and Iran crossed it.

Fact: Trump has deployed over 14K MORE US troops to the Middle East and is sending an additional 4K now.

Fact: Iran should get the message, attack us and get a whiff of our Tomahawks.

Fact: NEOCONs are closely enmeshed with the US defense industry and profit greatly financially during periods of war.

Fact: That Obama deal was especially lucrative to not only the US, but to our allies as well.

By killing Sulemanei and starting ME War 3.0, Trump just proved he played all his supporters for suckers - he was a NEOCON hiding in plain sight. And if we could see his tax returns, we'd find out how much money he gets from the defense industry, just like Dick Cheney.

Ok, liberals are basically saying when we kill OBL it’s ok because we Democrats and the President can kill the most wanted Terrorist on the planet, but you Trump and Republicans can not kill the second most wanted and powerful terrorist, that’s a war crime, you Republicans need to take it until we have a Democrat in the WH again, then we can kill the guy. Lol

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

"There's been no decision whatsoever to leave Iraq," Esper told Pentagon reporters ..."I don't know what that letter is... We're trying to find out where that's coming from, what that is. But there's been no decision made to leave Iraq. Period."

"...CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement. We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure," the letter said.

It was signed by U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General William Seely III, commanding general of the U.S.-led military coalition against Islamic State.

Clarity of purpose, unity of action. Nice to see the US knew exactly what it was doing when Trump ordered the assassination of Soleimani and had planned exactly how to handle the subsequent inevitable reaction. When the war kicks up, we can sleep soundly, knowing we're in safe hands.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Ok, liberals are basically saying when we kill OBL it’s ok

Who said this? Which liberals?

I never supported making a martyr of Bin Laden. I wanted him on trial.

But then, I'm not a liberal. In the meantime, your crazed supreme leader is putting the world in jeopardy. This transcends any partisanship or political leanings.

The world must unite to defeat and bring Trump and the war machine to justice.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Maybe we will. Or maybe we'll support restraint and strengthen peaceful ties with the Iranian people

I would hope so. I do have a deep respect and fondness for Iranians and their culture, grew with them in LA, we have a very large Persian community and they’re good people, but I do have contempt for their religious Mullahs.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

After that Obama gave us ISIS

...not just ISIS, Obama gave us all the Iranian proxies as well. The Iranian were broke, almost irrelevant until the Obama nuclear deal which released billions upon billions of frozen Iranian assets.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_frozen_assets

this ^ is just what can be discovered publicly. Courtesy of wikileaks we know $101 billions was unfrozen immediately. How much of that has gone directly to fund Iran's proxies (terrorists and illegal militias)?

The nuke deal was dumb. On par with the original Bush invasion. Obama was all ego, he wanted a lasting legacy, he wasn't interested in world peace.

Just like a good little NEOCON....

*Fact: Trump has deployed over 14K MORE US troops to the Middle East and is sending an additional 4K now.*

Lol

You can always tell when this poster is completely flustered when he posts one sentence four lines long of word salad... Welcome to Middle East War #3 - courtesy of the Great Orange NEOCON, and his NEOCON partners Cheney, Bolton, Pompeo, and Graham...

Was that what you voted for in 2016?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So how many Trumpers here voted for a NEOCON in 2016?

None.

You claimed that Obama "gave us" ISIS and Trump wiped them out.

Both blatantly false statements.

Lol, all right, I'll rephrase: ISIS grew exponentially during Obama's glorious reign. But I'll stand by "Trump wiped them out," being as how their caliphate is gone. They control not one major city now. Look it up.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

As an Arab, who is against Irani dominion over Iraqi army, government and economy, I thank the US for removing Qassam Sulaymani, but I was hoping in more humane civilized way by arresting him and having international transparent trial, so the world would understand his crimes and justify his execution.

and I hope they carry on by removing all the militia leaders in Iraq who are responsible for crimes against humanity in all sorts.

and I really hope the remove the government elite who are have legal immunity and lead the country into corruption and chaos.

(of course I understand that political chaos works in favor of America's interests, like buying oil from black markets)

American troops dont care about Iraqi innocent civilians, they dont have compassion and they lack morals. they are merely serving orders favoring US interests.

After they clear the chaos and remove the criminal militia leaders and groups, they should leave Iraq by all means. and buy Oil from the legal market (which will never happen)

the fact that America let drone bombing of the car that Sulaymani was riding leaving Baghdad's Airport is a proof of how much control and intelligence forces America already have in Iraq.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If Iran had not attacked our Embassy and killed an American in a rocket attack none of this rotor have happened.

its simply a measured response and doesn’t make anyone a warmonger or a “neocon” or even change our overall policy.

just more liberal politics. Say he’s weak when he doesn’t respond then complain when he does.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I'll rephrase: ISIS grew exponentially during Obama's glorious reign. But I'll stand by "Trump wiped them out," being as how their caliphate is gone. They control not one major city now. Look it up.

If you could be bothered looking it up, I think you'll find that the Russians had a lot to do with the destruction of the caliphate. As did the Assad government, working with them, and the Kurds, now abandoned by Trump's glorious reign.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

When did one country attacking another country’s embassy in a third country become ok with liberals? Let me guess, January 2017.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The Iranian were broke,

Who is we and how did you break Iran????

The nuke deal was dumb.

Only to the dumb, it was fine deal which would have brought stability to the region, reduced US troop presence and resulted in less Americans dying.

But the right wing nutters don't care much about that, they are fine with fighting as long as they are personally not in danger, just like their cowardly leader, cadet bone spurs.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

We respect what you have decided, no, we didn't send that letter, yes we did, no we didn't, ....

White man speak with forked tongue, redux?

Yep, not who you voted for, but that's what you got! Humiliating getting scammed, isn't it? Now you know how all those Trump Univ grads felt...

its simply a measured response and doesn’t make anyone a warmonger or a “neocon” or even change our overall policy.

This morning's best laugh - kill Iran's top General and that's a measured response...

Watching Trumpers spin themselves into the ground is really entertaining. Their "bring the troops home" hero has just started another endless Middle East War - the dream of every Repub NEOCON holding some Boeing, Halliburton, or Northrop stock.

The Great Orange NEOCON is firmly in charge at the White House - and planning to attack 52 location in Iran to include cultural sites, which would be a war crime.

Well, Donnie is consistent - peacetime or war, he's all about the crime...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

You can type words in capital letters a thousand times doesn’t make it true. You mock the troops leaving and you mock the troops staying. Which one is it?

yes that was a measured response. Wait and see what’s next if Iran doesn’t “knock it off”.

We must not forget that the one-sided Iraq resolution was passed only by the majority Shia members. By abstaining, the Sunni and Kurd members showed that they foresaw the result, but disagreed with it and refused to take part.

If you dont like the response from Trump what should he have done instead when we our Embassy was attacked?

if you dont think the troops should stay, then do you support them going home?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that Trump is in cahoots with the Mullahs, just like he is with Putin.

Just look at the facts;

Trump pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Treaty, giving the hardliners and Mullahs exactly what they wanted. That deal was negotiated by the Moderates, who want to overthrow the Mullahs and bring Iran back into the league of nations. The Mullahs hated it...

After massive demonstrations over the past several months threatening the Mullahs, Trump gives them exactly what they want to deflect and bring the people together against the "Great Satan".

And just to hammer it home, the Mullahs tell Trump to add in "we'll attack cultural sites", just to further give credence to the Great Satan narrative and further inflame the Iranian people to support the Ayatollah...

Trump has given the Mullahs everything they hoped for - and helped solidify their hold on power. I wonder what the QPQ was? Made-up Dirt on Biden or a Trump Casino and Resort Tehran....

2 ( +2 / -0 )

More Iranians attended the funeral of Qassem Soleimani than Americans who attended the inauguration of Trump. Those crowd photos must have displeased him. Trump has managed to unite the Iranians during a time of civil unrest.

I doubt he cares, I personally don’t know a single person that is weeping over this garbage.

Trump has managed to unite the Iranians during a time of civil unrest.

He definitely United the GOP and the Pentagon.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

it was fine deal which would have brought stability to the region

Sigh...only to the deaf, dumb and blind, because, Iran proxies were created or funded almost immediately that money was released to Iran.

Without the money, the following would have died out as a result of the Arab Spring, ir would not exist at all.

Syrian Civil War;

Bahraini Uprising;

Iraq Government protests;

Yemeni Civil War;

The deal slowed NOT stopped nuclear activities, enrichment was still legal, and it was only for a fixed period.

The gains were immaterial because there are no practical remedy fir non compliance. The deal was rushed in the dying days of the Obama adminstration so the oil contracts can be signed.

I'd say so. The Army times recently have released an article stating that despite Donnie Dirtbag's announcement that US forces were leaving Syria 'now', they have not moved an inch out of Syrian territory!

And IMHO, if Iran really is stirring up so much crap, wouldn't be easier to impose a 'No Fly Zone' or even a blockade instead of going into an all-out war that would only make things worse for everyone? After all, there's been some political protests in Iran over the past few years and a war with the US would only strengthen and 'justify' their government's BS stand about America being the 'Great Satan'.

But isn't it extremely risky for the Supreme Leader to rub with the Supreme 'Moron' (his words), AND to do it, sacrifice his right hand man? Why would his left hand man (Ghaani) trust him, he could be sacrificed too.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Only source of security?

The Quds only report to the Supreme leader himself directly. Conversely, the other government armed forces report to the government directly, Not the Supreme leader.

The existence of the Quds is the only reason why the politicians hasn't rolled the mullahs, despite the pain the country has to suffer because of the mullahs.

America and its people are not the Great Satan. Rather, it's successive administrations appear to be, and especially under the latest incumbent they seem intent on revisiting their 80s nostalgia trip.

And possibly, their WW2 behaviour by hassling other Americans

Several travellers of Iranian heritage told BBC News they faced inappropriate questions about their views. One group said they were stopped for hours at the Canadian-US border at the weekend. Democratic US lawmakers condemned the alleged incidents. Around 60 Iranians and Iranian-Americans said they were stopped for up to seven-and-a-half hours on Sunday while trying to cross into the US at the Peace Arch Border Crossing near Blaine, Washington.

The only good thing this attack has done is exposed the bankruptcy of Trumpers - they have no values or core beliefs - its all "Whatever Trump says"....

Trump has screamed "No More Wars" for four years - "Bring the troops home!", "No More Blood!"....and they all cheer...

And then he sends 14K MORE troops to the desert, then he starts Middle East War #3, and then orders 4K MORE troops to deploy...and they all cheer...

I'd put money that if Trump;

Said he was for gun confiscation....they'd all say he was brilliant.....

Said he supports Rowe vs Wade....they'd all say he was s stable genius....

Said he was ditching Pence and picking Joe Biden as his running mate....they'd say he was a 4D chess Master...

There's no critical thinking, just robot-like head nodding...

Its truly a cult...

He says he's the 'chosen one'. Where is the outrage over that?

Around 60 Iranians and Iranian-Americans said they were stopped for up to seven-and-a-half hours on Sunday while trying to cross into the US at the Peace Arch Border Crossing near Blaine, Washington.

I knew 3 Iranian-Americans when I was in college. They or their parents came to the US to escape Iran's totalitarian regime.

He's being lauded by many evangelicals, some of whom clearly have a different take on Christianity to the majority outside of those particular circles. By claiming that a deity is on his side etc, this takes the conflict into some very dubious areas. What you get is a strange and illogical alliance of theocracy, demagoguery and tyranny.

Iranian people, I have found over the years, are pretty much the same as any of us. I have worked alongside and befriended Iranians and some of them were also escaping the brutal regime of the Pahlavi family.

Without the money, the following would have died out as a result of the Arab Spring, ir would not exist at all.

Syrian Civil War;

Bahraini Uprising;

Iraq Government protests;

Yemeni Civil War;

Conveniently ignoring everything but Iran, if thats the world view of the right wing nutters no wonder they get humiliated everywhere.

Sigh...only to the deaf, dumb and blind, because, Iran proxies were created or funded almost immediately that money was released to Iran.

There are plenty of other proxies in the region, Saudi proxies, UAE proxies, Turkish proxies, any particular reason you ignore them, or is it just ignorance !!

The sanctions drove them broke (bankrupt).

No they didn't

But isn't it extremely risky for the Supreme Leader to rub with the Supreme 'Moron' (his words),

Trump and Pompeo??

It's interesting. Obama pulls the trigger and kills terrorist scumbag bin Laden- Republicans approve and give credit.

Trump pulls the trigger and kills terrorist scumbag Soleimani- Democrats and their syncophants in the media wring their hands and cry.

There wont be any significant repercussions. Iran will make noise, beat their chest, and take it. They have no interest in seeing their country turned into a parking lot.

It's interesting how so many are concerned about Soleimani and yet we're only hearing from them, now. Nothing about his solidarity with the Kurdish fighters and the Mansour leadership in taking back Mosul from ISIS.

No, trying to be on topic, and relevant, we are discussing the Iran deal, you're trying to justify your argument using a drugs dealer's defence (they're doing it too).

No they didn't

https://www.businessinsider.com/obama-misled-congress-secretly-broke-sanctions-for-iran-before-the-deal-2018-6/?r=AU&IR=T

So why was it necessary for Obama to misled congress just to give Iran some money?

https://m.dw.com/en/foreign-investments-spark-controversy-in-iran/a-19117475

And it's no coincidence that after the deal, Iran went forth and signed contracts all over Europe and courting foreign investments (read grant access to their oil).

Trump and Pompeo??

meh not even a segue...red herring.

I would hope so. I do have a deep respect and fondness for Iranians and their culture, grew with them in LA, we have a very large Persian community and they’re good people, but I do have contempt for their religious Mullahs.

Persians and Irans are not quite the same.  Persians are an Iranian ethnic group that make up over half the population of Iran. Iranians are not one group of people but several. Persians are not Arabs. There are Persians who are Christians and mostly left after the culture revolution.

Soleimani was responsible for countless deaths and repression around the entire region. Killed and tortured his fellow Iranians who had the audacity to protest their repressive government. Plotted terror attacks globally. Referring to him as a military commander is an insult to actual military commanders. He was a murderous thug and the world is a better place without him in it. His elimination will aid in the return of peace and stability.

Lets not bring Rudy into this, you'll get egg on your face!!

He didn't and you know it.

Is seeking foreign investment a crime now?? No logic at all.

Your links do not support any of your conspiracy theories and still you post them.

Reading problems????

It’s just mind boggling why he wasn’t taken out a long time ago.
