Hundreds of civilians reported dead within the first 24 hours. The Russian steamroller of death in action. Right now I am so disgusted with Russia and absolutley if you put Putin in front of me he would not make it home for dinner! Criminal!

Get out of Ukraine and pay full compensation for your crimes of murder and destruction.

Why would Russia seize the Chernobyl nuclear plant (not far inside Ukraine border) that has been dysfunctional since the mid-1980's while continuously giving problems?

Or Moscow is intending to threaten Kiev if it were to blow up the plant one more time..

Quite unimaginable..

-13 ( +3 / -16 )

seizes Chernobyl nuclear power plant

The reason why Russia took Chernobyl has been revealed: Because Ukraine had already shelled a waste repository and increased the background radiation by 50X. It is still possible to be there, but barely. Ukraine obviously blamed Russia, but smart money says NO.

http://chornobyl.in.ua/en/radiation-background-ukraine.html

the Russian public is not going to be happy seeing dead Ukranian people and families on tv. this is going to be an unpopular war in Russia, and will be the undoing of Putin -he has overplayed his hand

9 ( +19 / -10 )

Why we did not see this large news coverage when Poroshenko did "atiterrorsit" operation against people of Lugansk and Donetsk?

That time all you were quiet and "nothing serious" have happened.

Why this DOUBLE standard guys?

One is Ukraine fighting domestic terrorists, and the other is an international invasion of a sovereign nation. The difference is huge and obvious.

6 ( +21 / -15 )

Our resident alternative media types telling us that Putin wasn’t going to make any incursions into Ukraine and all of this was MSM alarmism and warmongering have proven themselves to be wildly off the mark here.

As a service to us all, could they post their sources so we can take a look at them ourselves?

5 ( +19 / -14 )

Russia is much more that just a nuclear superpower also a biological and cyber superpower and who knows what else putin might unleash on those countries or regions that oppose his unification of Ukraine.

Putin may not call it unification at this time , but that's another deceit.

Meanwhile the USA is cowering in the white house too petrified to cut the Russian SWIFT !

Ukraine says it won't give up it's freedom but however it appears that Ukraine freedom is already lost.

Putin isn't playing the sanctions game and neither is China or North Korea.

A cyber war is imminent.

Treading on eggshells would be an appropriate headline.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

James Clapper, the former general and CIA officer, said that there were other functioning nuclear reactors scattered throughout Ukraine, and just one reactor would make a real mess for everybody if hit with explosives.

Joke is on them, its broken.

Where's pics of Luhansk/Donetsk refugees?

It is absolutely insane that conservatives have shifted from “it’s not going to happen, msm is lying, US should ignore it” to “it happened, told you so, why didn’t Biden do anything?”

Shameless.

4 ( +21 / -17 )

After months of being warned of a invasion, Europe still got caught with their pants down. What a waste of their so called diplomacy and all those meetings. Russia must be laughing their ass off inside during all those peace talks the held with them.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

“Nobody ever said that Putin would not invade Ukraine”.

You still appear to be terribly confused.

11 ( +22 / -11 )

Shameless

Wasn’t that you who just yesterday who said no need for an evacuation plan for US citizens they could just go “buy a ticket”?

-5 ( +9 / -14 )

Wasn’t that you who just yesterday who said no need for an evacuation plan for US citizens they could just go “buy a ticket”?

That’s right. You want to send troops in now do you? Quelle surprise.

-1 ( +9 / -10 )

James Clapper, the former general and CIA officer, said that there were other functioning nuclear reactors scattered throughout Ukraine, and just one reactor would make a real mess for everybody if hit with explosives.

The Russians do we have a pretty good smart missile guidance system in place, that does not mean it’s always accurate but within the margin of error it’s pretty good, so I don’t think that will happen, but when you have a full scale water breaks out, you only need to make one mistake.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Honestly a strange move, the only justification I can see for this is they don't want it to be inadvertently hit, causing further nuclear disaster. That doesn't make sense either though, because there are no nearby military targets I am aware of that could warrant that. I definitely want to see more on this story as it develops as to what the rationale was.

@Peter14

One is Ukraine fighting domestic terrorists, and the other is an international invasion of a sovereign nation. The difference is huge and obvious.

I don't support Russia here, I am never gonna support any imperialistic action from any source, but come on Peter. Let's not try to whitewash neo-nazi violence on ethnic minority groups. It wasn't "Ukraine fighting domestic terrorists", over 14,000 people died.

Does it justify Russia's invasion? No, of course not, that would be ethno-nationalism, but we should not be whitewashing actual nazis either. And yes, an extremist force with wolfsengels (which was used by nazis) on their uniform are nazis. The Aryan Nation uses the same thing for crying out loud. If we want to understand why things are happening, we need to frame things as accurately as possible.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

“The Russians do have a pretty good smart guided missile system . . . “

What if the Ukrainians deliberately blow one or more of them up? Mother Russia is so close that it’ll suffer from the consequences.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Putin was very clear when he defined the goals of the Russian Army operation: Root out fascist authority from Kiev, allow Ukrainians free presidential & parliament elections without having guns held to their heads, disarm Ukraine & prevent it from developing nuclear weapons (as threatened by Zelensky 2 days before Russian operation).

The Kiev regime came to power by a bloody coup in February 2014, ousting the legally elected president, Yanukovych, with the help of the West & now this same West is bragging & crying about democracy.

Putin is achieving that & sure he means what he says.

-9 ( +10 / -19 )

Zelinsky kamikaze have been warned by Putin...

-12 ( +4 / -16 )

Russia presses invasion to outskirts of Ukrainian capital; seizes Chernobyl nuclear power plant

That’s the Headline. The wind at the time dictates who gets the radiation. Could backfire on a given day. And invasion of a sovereign state well the wind won’t change that. Georgia, Chechnya’s 2 wars, Afghanistan if you want to go further back. Russian military don’t have a history of success. Destroying everything in their path yes. Success not so much.

it’s only been two days, let’s see what happens, once boots on the ground they might find a sudden lack of body bags. Russians don’t support this at all. It’s an old mans delusional grasp at a dream.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

It is absolutely insane that conservatives have shifted from “it’s not going to happen, msm is lying, US should ignore it” to “it happened, told you so, why didn’t Biden do anything?”

Instead of the daily anti-U.S. conservative, right, Republican snide comments, even on articles that have nothing to do with the U.S., how about telling us YOUR solution to this ordeal?

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Hundreds of civilians reported dead within the first 24 hours.

Did you read this on Fake News Network?

I saw this reported on a number outlets.

I’m probably banging my head against a wall by asking this, but could you tell us what we should be reading or watching which refutes this and helps us all to get a true picture?

Links would be absolutely lovely.

By the way, my first request about links to sources telling us that a possible Russian incursion into Ukraine was just cooked up by the MSM to spread alarm and fear is still there.

My first post got a few dislikes but no links. Very predictable.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Putin has gone mad....living in his antiseptic bubble in Moscow, at his many palaces, and on his multi-million dollar yacht, he dreams he is invincible....

He has captured Chernobyl because he knows what fear it strikes in Europeans who remember the threat of massive radiation contamination when it exploded in 1986.

So what are Putin's plans now? Threaten again to blow it up sending radiation plumes toward Europe?

These are the schemes of a madman...untethered from reality....

That someone would call him a "genius" and the pro-Russian comments here just shows how far his brainwashing has infected the far-right in the US...

4 ( +10 / -6 )

NOMINATION

how about telling us YOUR solution to this ordeal?

It is a very simple solution that doesn't require rocket science:

1- Stop trying to contain Russia (& China) & let the nations develop & progress by their own ways.

2- Give up sanction wars against everybody who doesn't wish to live by your rules.

3- Stop believing in being the only superpower & stop trying to be the world's policeman.

4- Stop arming corrupt regimes such as the Kiev gang & its fascist paramilitary supporters such as Right Sector, Aidar & Azov Battalions.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Putin was very clear when he defined the goals of the Russian Army operation: Root out fascist authority from Kiev,

There are none in kiev, they are in the separatist region of Donbas.

allow Ukrainians free presidential & parliament elections without having guns held to their heads,

All elections held after 2014 have been free and fair. If Russia runs any election it will be rigged for pro Russian candidate and others will be refused permission to run, or jailed or framed or assassinated as per Russian election standards.

disarm Ukraine & prevent it from developing nuclear weapons (as threatened by Zelensky 2 days before Russian operation).

Russia is the threat. Not Ukraine. Disarm Russia and remove it's nukes. It can not be trusted.

1 ( +12 / -11 )

What will happen soon, I believe, is the following:

Russian Army attacking from three directions: Donbas & Kharkov from the East & northeast. Chernobyl from the north, Odessa & Kherson from the south. The eastern & southeastern front will secure Kharkov & prevent the Ukrainian army from moving East. The North & South fronts will close in to meet in the middle, just west of the Dnepr, surrounding both Kiev & the remainings of the Ukrainian army east of the Dnepr, forcing them to surrender. The Kiev gang & those wanted by the Russians for crimes against Donbass will escape to the West. They may organize a boring government in exile.

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

Let's not try to whitewash neo-nazi violence on ethnic minority groups. It wasn't "Ukraine fighting domestic terrorists", over 14,000 people died.

Show me the list of names of those confirmed killed by the few identified neo-nazis in one Ukraine battalion. Domestic terrorists have killed tens of thousands of Ukrainians and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes in Donabs. You have no thoughts for them? Only for those killed in the terrorist enclave. Shame on you.

0 ( +10 / -10 )

Zelinsky kamikaze have been warned by Putin...

And when Russia or China or someone else tells your country to do what it does not want to do or they will take over your country by force, you will get on your knees and comply meekly? Wow.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

@M. Jamil

Your solution is anarchy!

No rules or laws for International behavior and no penalties for those who break them.

The Bank robber does not like any laws prohibiting the robbing of banks either. They are there to protect people and property from anarchy.

Russia does not like choices its neighbor "might take" so invades and murders as its reply. You support such actions? Disgraceful.

Nations that want to create modern Empires like China and Russia should be allowed to do so? As Russia is doing even today. Thats no solution, that is recipe for slavery, disaster and world war.

Please try again.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Russians are condemning this invasion and holding rallies across the country. Prominent politicians, academics, TV hosts, actors….. have come out against putin.

On the other hand trump and faux continue genuflecting to putin and cannot stop gushing about what a great job he is doing!!!

Pathetic.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

There are more neo Nazis working for faux than there are in the whole of Ukraine!!!

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Addfwyn

Does it justify Russia's invasion? No, of course not.

Tell me, please, what would you do if your people were targeted by artillery, rockets, drones, etc... daily after having burned your people alive (Odessa Unions' Building, May 2, 2014)?

What would you do if no one cared about granting you 7 your country security guarantees & continue expanding to your borders filling the land & sea with military bases, surrounding you from all directions?

What would you do if the world's biggest military alliance kept arming your rivals & inciting them to wage wars against you (Georgia August 2008 & Ukraine 2014)?

What would you do if 2 prime minters of a neighboring country threatened to use nuclear weapons against you (Tymoshenko 2014, Zelensky 2022)?

Read the Washington Post, March 25, 2014 under the title:

In latest wiretapping leak, Yulia Tymoshenko appears to say ‘nuclear weapons’ should be used to kill Russians

The Bank robber does not like any laws prohibiting the robbing of banks either. They are there to protect people and property from anarchy.

But I sure don't want the bank (OIL, GAS & other) rubbers to secure the peace & impose their own laws upon the world.

Russia & soon China are there to but these rubbers &gangsters where they belong.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Tell me, please, what would you do if your people were targeted by artillery, rockets, drones, etc... daily

Both sides shoot at each other. You conveniently fail to mention that, and lay all blame on Ukraine.

after having burned your people alive (Odessa Unions' Building, May 2, 2014)?

Such a thing is a crime, like shooting down a passenger jet. Have investigations and Trial and hold those few responsible accountable. Not the entire country.

What would you do if no one cared about granting you 7 your country security guarantees & continue expanding to your borders filling the land & sea with military bases, surrounding you from all directions?

Like Russia surrounding Ukraine with its much larger better armed military? Russia gave a security guarantee to Ukraine for eliminating its stockpiles of Soviet era nuclear weapons. Now Russia breaks that security guarantee. so what are they worth in reality?

What would you do if the world's biggest military alliance kept arming your rivals & inciting them to wage wars against you (Georgia August 2008 & Ukraine 2014)?

Complete BS. As you know the up arming was due to Russian threats of war against their much weaker neighbors like Ukraine. And now Russia proves them all correct.

What would you do if 2 prime minters of a neighboring country threatened to use nuclear weapons against you (Tymoshenko 2014, Zelensky 2022)?

Just like Russia threatens anyone who attacks it with nukes? I would call that even, if they had the weapons to use but they do not, Russia does.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

Russia & soon China are there to but these rubbers &gangsters where they belong.

Your on the wrong page friend. Russia and China ARE the gangsters. They will do as all gangsters eventually do, they will go too far. Then they will face the collective punishment of the world.

You may not have all that long to wait, to see that happen.

Hitler and Stalin started WWII in Europe. Putin starting WWIII in Europe. Seems Russia has a hard time learning.

Peter14Today  12:13 pm JST

One is Ukraine fighting domestic terrorists, and the other is an international invasion of a sovereign nation. The difference is huge and obvious.

You claim to have no stake in this but you are very quick to dismiss the original concerns and reasons the ethnic Russian broke away.

I come from a country clearly decided along ethnic lines.

Had my ethnic group been threatened and broke away then the central government passed law after law removing more of our rights do you think we would want to return?

No my country when the trouble started did what was right it took steps to reassure the minority of its linguistic and cultural diversity and security.

Ukraine did the opposite, giving a maniac like Putin the excuse he needed.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Hitler and Stalin started WWII in Europe. Putin starting WWIII in Europe. Seems Russia has a hard time learning.

The only one I see that wants ww3 seems to be you.

In all the threads all you seem to be interested in is going to war.

I know you used to be military but do you like war that much?

4 ( +8 / -4 )

I saw many conservative posts stating that an invasion by Russia into the Ukraine was imminent; especially given the background of Biden being in the White House also when Russia first invaded the Ukraine.

The question is, going back to 2012 when Mitt Romney was making the point of Russia being the number one geopolitical threat, why didn't any Democrat administration since then enact any policies to try and prevent this.

Instead, we have a scrambling of incomplete sanctions being thrown together, while Russian forces trample into the Ukraine.

Europe deserves a harsh scolding too, for its actions and inactions that emboldened Putin and led up to this event.

Now Sweden, Norway and other countries are re-thinking admission into NATO.

If only these countries and leaders were as brave as those Ukrainian soldiers who recently said, 'Russian warship, go f-yourself,' before being hit by artillery.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

I wish them luck. If the Ukraine government stops being so stubborn, recognizes Donbass and verifies Ukraine is an independent non NATO state, the world could live in peace. Russia will leave and the EU can have cheap gas.

already I have trouble with rising petrol prices.

It is crazy for people to die.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

You claim to have no stake in this but you are very quick to dismiss the original concerns and reasons the ethnic Russian broke away.

I dislike bullies. But if your not happy where you live because laws change or rates and taxes go up or public safety becomes a concern, you move. You do not try to overthrow the majority. These unhappy Ukrainian citizens that consider themselves Russian, should have moved to Russia. That is the civilized thing to do. They started a conflict and tens of thousands have died on both sides because of their choices. Now more die and it will not stop.

Say what you like about how the Ukraine treats it's people. Under the Pro Russian governments for decades the boot was on the other foot. Now that it changed your unhappy with the results.

The Donbas pro Russian chose a war with Ukraine and they expected Ukraine to just give up its territory to a minority? Russia would never do such a thing, nor would China or the US but you expect Ukraine to roll over? Sorry but I do not agree.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

The only one I see that wants ww3 seems to be you.

In all the threads all you seem to be interested in is going to war.

I know you used to be military but do you like war that much?

I hate bullies that much. I have studied history and WWII has many lessons. He who excuses war and appeases the warmonger is doomed to slavery or death or submission. Putin will not stop at Ukraine.

I would much rather he take his forces home and leave everyone in peace. He wont. So yes I call for people to rise up against this madman and put a stop to him now before it spreads all over Europe and beyond.

Some seem to live in fantasy land where Putin is a happy, smiling, generous leader who's wisdom and peaceful nature are there for all to see. He is a despicable, hateful racist little man with a Napoleon complex. He may yet end his life with the death of millions on his hands. He is off to a good start.

What on earth does Putin want with Chernobyl? He isn't half as bright as he thinks he is. Neither side can attack it to use it as a weapon since both sides are at risk according to which way the wind blows. Just leave it alone and bypass it, surely?

As for Kiev, I would have thought a siege would be more sensible (from Russia's point of view) than a direct assault, but clearly Putin's plans are completely unpredictable.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Maybe, if trump did not withhold 400 million dollars in military aid from Ukraine in attempt to blackmail the Ukraine president for help in rigging a second election, Ukrainians would be able to better defend themselves from the Russians.

Trump, who was impeached for withholding nearly $400 million in military aid from Ukraine, said 'this deadly Ukraine situation would never have happened' if he were in office*

The Soviet Red army engaged in an orgy of rape when it captured Berlin in 1945. I hope this time the Russian army commanders will restrain their soldiers' libidos.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

since both sides are at risk according to which way the wind blows

You simply forget that the Russians are militarily drilled , also civilians and school pupils, and have plenty of ABC suits, gas masks etc at hand while in the other wind direction they are all fully exposed to whatever high radiation and maybe don’t even have some bunkers or other places to hide the highest contaminated radioactive clouds for some hours.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

@Sven

Are you seriously suggesting that the Russians might think they could release radiation from the reactor and "deal with it", if necessary, on their side? Get real. What's next? Kamikaze bears?

Yes, I do. Obviously they think they can deal with everything and everyone, don’t they?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

About Chernobyl, Ukraine would have been happy to give it to Russia as a gift. The fact that Russia took it and killed people there means that they have something bad in mind. The structure has nothing to offer but radiation.

Planning ahead. Ukraine freedom fighters could use the radioactive material to make "dirty bombs" and get them into Russian cities.

Russia is playing for keeps. As long as there are more western leaning Ukrainians in the Ukraine there will now be a Russian military presence to back up the puppet governments installed by Russia from now on.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

About Chernobyl, Ukraine would have been happy to give it to Russia as a gift. The fact that Russia took it and killed people there means that they have something bad in mind. The structure has nothing to offer but radiation.

In addition to my last post, Russia can now make "dirty bombs" with traceable Ukrainian uranium and blame it on Ukraine in the future. Russia likes doing things like that.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Russia has apparently gained control of the sky in Kyiv, where they shot down a Ukranian SU-27. Rumor has it the shoot down was of "The ghost of Kyiv" but that's awful hard to back up.

The "ghost of Kyiv" - Ukraine's "Red Baron pilot" who has "shot down 6 Russian fighters" with outdated Soviet crap is probably a morale boosting hoax.
