China and Russia are authoritarian states where the state controls media. Who knows what's actually going on in either nation.

I often wonder why the liberal media is insistent on supporting this new “imported cases” narrative.

After carefully analyze pandemic data around the world, one can only conclude that virus doesn't like lies.

PTownsend, you don't need to know what happened in other countries. You only need to know what happened in your country where your loved ones live.

oh,yes, you can trust US president who wouldn't control media.

As other have said I wonder why this insistence with calling them imported cases? I find it very difficult to believe that Shanghai (23million), Beijing (19million) and Tianjin (13million) have no domestic cases..

Perhaps its not wanting this to be referred to as the Chinese Corona Virus in the future?

12 ( +12 / -0 )

China has already started blaming others countries. Soon they will be saying it didn't start there.

Have nothing to do with that in this case. Japan's suppression of testing also means that no one knows what's actually going on here either.

If anything, Russia and China is doing a lot more to protect its citizens by enforcing social distancing and business shutdowns.

Japan's "reported" infected numbers is about to hit peak, as Japan would only test a few thousand people a day at max, and there's very limited testing on weekends; and to lower the "reported" numbers, all Japan need to do is to reduce testing.

I understand the CCP's attitude. Perhaps, however, if the CCP had been forthright about the virus after it first started to spread in China, perhaps if journalists had been free to report that spread, then perhaps other nations would not be having the same level of problems they're having now. Just maybe. /

oh,yes, you can trust US president who wouldn't control media.

I personally don't trust a single word Trump says. And am aware he would love to have more control over all media outlets. He uses his media own to spread his propaganda.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

talk about calling the kettle black when the CCP has been busy with everything else but the virus. What effort it has put out is strictly for propaganda and nothing more else they wouldn't be involving themselves in a blame game, attacking a Japan destroyer tearing a 1 meter gash into it, encroaching or enticing Taiwan, and last recently sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat in their waters. Why didn't they stop their own from leaving their country and spreading this horrific virus globally?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The Chinese propaganda as it’s best.

It is notorious that all these diseases comes from there due to their low hygiene,to don’t mention their low mannered attitude and arrogance typical from a Communist regime.

Russia and his dictatorship are low as well, but still one step above China.

As someone steted well, the “Chinavirus” could have been prevented if they were honest with the world community back in the early stage of contagious.

Anyway the damage is done and there’s no way to revert things, but the world community can be aware of the lies and double face of such sneaky governments.

Only half true.

In China the state controls media, that's correct. In Russia the sate controls only several TV channels, there are many independent TV channels and news outlets of all political stripes, and if you are willing to use translation app you can get pretty good idea what's going in that country. False statement of yours'.

Actually, Western democracies can hide the truth nor less eagerly then the Chinese autocrats. Bjorn Olsen, professor of Upsala University and one of the main Sweden epidemiologists said that Sweden medical authorities systematically ignore the real situation, refuse to test possible coronavirus-infected people in order to have a nice picture and save money, as the result people don't imagine how terrible the real situation is. Check out Olsen's interview on NRK Norwegian news outlet.

As opposed to corporate control? What’s the difference? Silly silly reasoning.

I’ve spent time in China and tried to access news. Trust me, it’s different.

You have the freedom to check out conspiracy theories on the net. Many don’t.

Given how powerful crony capitalism is, I see your point. Especially here during Trump7s reign when big govt and big corporations are so closely linked. But having a single party led by a single leader with no opposition allowed decide what's reported and how it's reported, even 'partially' as a previous poster claimed is done in Russia, is different in my mind from having say a CNN reporting things one way, a Rupert Murdoch outlet reporting a different way, plus an Intercept reporting one way, a KKK publication another, plus all the 100s in between reporting on events from a full array of perspectives. And given the majority of Americans get news from social media, the notion of 'corporate media' having such great control is just a bit...not very believable.

Not like the liberal media in the US thought even a full lockdown would even work. Just six days before Trump blocked travel from there. But now same media singing a different tune and it’s year long quarantine or certain death for all.

A lot of Russians get and send news on social media like Facecook ot Twitter, nevertheless you still claim that every news route in Russia is government-controlled?? Oh my...

@William77

“Chinavirus” could have been prevented if they were honest with the world community back in the early stage of contagious

In Japan media the word Wuhan appeared in January, in February I heard or read it every day. Though Japan public then was more interested in the Diamond Princess case there were a lot of information on the Wuhan lockdown and about the situation in then also hard-hit South Korea. But Western countries completely ignored all that warnings, they did absolutely nothing to prevent the spread of the virus.

In early March I spent a week in London. During my whole stay I saw only a dozen or two of people wearing masks (and at that time there were already thousands of deaths in Italy). On the day of my departure the only people in the Heathrow airport I saw wearing masks were the Japanese staff at the JAL registration desk (local staff without masks). Who prevented Britons from taking at least this measure? Again, it's all Chinese fault?

The U.S. / Europeans completely blew it, despite abundant warning. Now they blame somebody else for their unpreparedness, arrogance and utmost negligence. What a childish behavior.

with more than 90% involving people coming from abroad.

Yeah, right, lets parrot CCP propaganda. Well done, "mainstream" media!

Already doing that. The CCP line is now that the coronavirus started with American military who brought it into CCP-land.

Who really believes there have been only 3,341 coronavirus deaths in China?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, done. ‘mainstream’ media

That is the figure given. What do you expect them to do? Not report it? As a thinking person, you get to choose whether to believe that figure or not.

Do any of your podcasters have an alternative to this figure?

Imported cases accounted for a record 98. Half involved Chinese nationals returning from Russia's Far Eastern Federal District, home to the city of Vladivostok, who re-entered China through border crossings in Heilongjiang province.

How many did they infect in Russia

In Russia the sate controls only several TV channels, there are many independent TV channels and news outlets of all political stripes

The state controls the biggest ones

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_freedom_in_Russia#Government_ownership_and_control_of_media_outlets

All but one national TV channel are fully or partially owned by the state. The last channel – NTV – is owned by Gazprom, in which the state has a controlling stake. The situation in the radio market is similar.

As of 2009, the Russian government owns 60% of newspapers, and in whole or in part, all national television stations

Observers have noted the loss of the independence of national television stations. As stated by the BBC, two out of the three main federal channels Channel One and Russia TV are controlled by the government, since they are completely or partially owned by the Rosimuschestvo (the Federal Agency for State Property Management). Instead, state-controlled energy giant Gazprom owns NTV.

Russia TV (Rossiya) covers 98.5% of the country's territory and is state- owned. Channel One (Pervyj Kanal) covers 98.8% of Russia's territory and has a shared state and private ownership (51% state- 49% private). However, most of the private shareholders include National Media Group (controlled by the structures of Yuri Kovalchuk, Chairman of the Board of Rossiya Bank, one of the largest banks in Russia, and Vladimir Putin’s personal friend; and Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea football club and Putin’s ally). NTV covers 84% of the national territory.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, "All three major television networks are now in the hands of Kremlin loyalists."

The situation in the radio market is similar. Major information channels are in one way or another controlled by the state. Only four Russian radios broadcast political talk shows: Mayak, Radio Rossii, Vesti FM, and Ekho Moskvy. Mayak, Vesti FM and Radio Rossii are state-owned (Rosimushchestvo), while Ekho Moskvy is owned by the state-controlled Gazprom Media

Russia does not an internet firewall like CCP China and does not censor all public information including social media like CCP China. I know that "Russia-bad" is the common narrative on the corporate Western media, but this is silly. Give it up already.

But Putin's government is trying to (if not already) implementing one.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Don't think for one second that the CCP and Kremlin are really all that buddy buddy. They may find each other "good for use" at times, but with the CCP messing up by creating a pandemic, Russia is more than smart enough to keep them at arms length.

Y'know, there are different degrees

Cuba is not as bad as China too, and China is not as bad as North Korea

And Germany is not as bad as the US
