There are reports of "ghost buses" leaving Chernobyl for Belarus at night carrying the dead. Supposedly around 150 Russian soldiers are hospitalized.

“Russia has repeatedly lied about its intentions,” Stoltenberg said. At the same time, he said, pressure is being kept up on Kyiv and other cities, and “we can expect additional offensive actions bringing even more suffering.”

2020, Russian did their own grave with their own teeth

Many speculate about whom in Russia would seek to overthrow Vladimir Putin. Will it be street protests? Will the oligarchs push him aside? Or others in his inner circle? Were I Vladimir Putin I would be most concerned about Russian soldiers turning on him. Not the officers but the soldiers turning their weapons on the Generals, spooks, security apparatus and on Mr. Putin himself.

Whoever order the soldiers to dig radiation soil must be one hell of a genius commander.

I suspect it will be years before Russia admits the truth and the figures for exposed, dead and dying troops is known. Apparently they have been blithely driving around and digging in what is known as the red forrest which is the most highly radioactive area. The troops had never heard of the Chernobyl disaster.

The whole area is radiated, not just on site.

Just too horrible to contemplate.

Once again, this shows that Putin cares for no one except himself and these people will get sick and some will die because of his twisted revisionist history beliefs and selfish political survival, disgusting.

On the other hand this is the first clear indication that the war in Ukraine has passed its peak. On a deep level this is extremely good news for all concerned, indeed for the whole world.

The attacks on Kyiv etc must be token fire to cover the general pullout and reassignment.

I remember the Chernobyl accident. I used to work in atomic energy and I can tell you that a disaster like that makes the whole area too toxic. Nobody has lived in the region since 1986. It's a ghost town and Russia has nothing to gain by capturing it.

Even worse than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. I can't believe that Putin is so stupid to forget about this. What a fool, or maybe he just doesn't care at all about his army. May I also mention CoVid? It's still a #1 problem, ya know.

He sits on his ass in the parlor room, giving orders to install puppet governments anywhere by cyberwar and/or physical war. He just LOVES to call all the shots, like a little tin god. He doesn't care about his own people either. He's calling up an army draft for hundreds of thousands of new recruits, saying they won't be sent to Ukraine. Uh-huh. Where, then? Moldova? Estonia? You can't trust this jerk!

The story I heard was the Russians wanted to secure the spent nuclear fuel at the site. There is supposedly plutonium there and the Russians were for a time claiming Ukraine was going to make atomic weapons to use against them. If you remember it was the first thing Russian forces captured.

Not defending Mr. Putin but you can probably blame it on a lower ranking officer who was clueless. Mr. Putin is not probably giving routine orders at a battalion or company level. Some First Lieutenant or Captain probably thought defensive trenches were a good idea, or maybe there was a general order to dig in all Russian held areas to the north of Kiev and said Second Lt. or Captain dutifully carried out the order without thinking things through all the way.

Just from experience an American soldier or sailor would have said to their officer "Sir. Are you out of your effin' mind? This s__t's radioactive!" I have some first hand experience with that O_o

Ukraine reported that three convoys of Russian forces had left toward Belarus, while the remaining troops were apparently planning to leave too, the agency said.

Military history shows us that the worst casualties are inflicted when one army routs and is pursued, not during the actual combat phase.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Yeah, I'm sure this is true, because the Ukrainian side went and tested the Russian soldiers for radiation poisoning.. /s

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

In a widely reported story on Twitter the soldiers went into a lab and took some equipment and this was a lab that contained highly radioactive materials. If we look at the numer supports of Russians plundering money wedding rings all sorts it is not hard to imagine that the pull of getting their hands on some highly expensive technical equipment might have been too much to resist. Sounds like something you'd hear in a movie about a curse

Just like a radioactive hot potato that you don’t want to hold on to but dare not drop either. Based on how inept the Russians have proven themselves to be, you can bet they were more than happy to to this red hot potato back to the Ukrainians.

That Chernobyl's topsoil is still so dangerous even 36 years later is a salutary lesson for those idiots who think 'you can win a nuclear war'. No you cannot. No one does. Even if you survived the intial blasts of a full thermonuclear exchange, millions of acres would be contaminated, and if you tried to plough that land you will just get radiation sickness.

So can the liberals round here stop blithely dismissing the nuclear threat as if it would just be a minor inconvenience?

ESL Mundi - Do you still think Russia is going to push on to Portugal after they conquer Ukraine?

ESL Mundi - is this you from February?

It appears the war, such as it is, is already over. And if Vladimir Putin manages to achieve his declared objective of decapitating the evil and illegitimate government of Ukraine with such minimal force and minimal bloodshed, and replace it with a pro-Russian government that will actually govern for the benefit of the Ukrainian people, his name will rank with Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, and Charles of Sweden as one of the greatest military leaders of all time.

Keep in mind that it took the USA three weeks and more than 30,000 dead Iraqis to take Baghdad, at the time considered an astonishing performance of modern blitzkrieg that 'shocked and awed' the world, including the Chinese military leadership. And also note that this is a report from distinctly unfriendly sources in the British media, as the spelling of Kiev clearly indicates. The Russian strategic brilliance goes well beyond lightning war and into the futuristic realm of quantum entanglement. And yet, the media is still bloviating falsehoods about the highly surgical operation.

Few expect Ukraine to emerge victorious from what is almost certain to be a prolonged, bloody, and vicious war – but so far, Kyiv’s forces have managed to inflict heavy losses on Putin’s troops.

The Russo-Ukraine war is “almost certain” to be over by this time next week, and the initial indications are that it will have been neither prolonged, nor bloody, nor vicious. Which, of course, is why the Zionist comedian who heads the preposterous, but violent puppet regime has already been reduced to publicly shrieking at the neocons and globalist leaders who egged him on rather than commanding his military forces.

Cool story, Vlad.

A bold take, to be sure
