S Korea virus outbreak grows

Just a reminder that everybody in every country is still far from being out of the woods yet. As long as all nations keep pursuing economic recovery and fighting the pandemic simultaneously we will be repeating this pattern for quite some time into the future.

Not good.

As of one day ago, fewer than 12% of South Koreans were fully vaccinated. That is not nearly enough to curtail the spread of the virus in the population.

Why has such a small proportion of South Koreans been vaccinated?

I'm sure they'll be OK because gyms have been ordered not to play music with a tempo of over 120 bpm and limit treadmills to 6km/h to prevent people from breathing too fast or splashing sweat on each other.

The purpose is to have less dead people by the time the population is immunized, if they achieve this purpose obviously they are not meaningless.

Unless the virus mutates to another covid version which will render the original vaccines useless.

Lockdowns and shut downs are meaningless!

They are not, you are just mistaken in what you believe is their purpose. Lockdowns are meant to facilitate the control of the spreading so the number of cases slow down to maneagable levels and give more opportunity to deploy more permanent measures like vaccines.

Eventually nearly everyone will be exposed to covid. For most the symptoms are rather mild. But a significant number of people have serious life threatening reactions. It’s for these people that a lockdown is important until they can be vaccinated. This group is much better off being vaccinated to buttress their immune systems to handle the effects of the virus. But the reality is the vast majority of people will eventually become infected.

People partied to early I always said this virus is not going away to soon. Its here to stay!

Korea's covid problem recently is related to the younger age groups. Similar to other countries, which ignored that sector at first by focusing on vaccinating the elderly.

The idea that Pfizer was not part of Operation Warp Speed is ludicrous. The Trump administration gave them and be other pharmaceutical companies preferential regulatory treatment to speed up development then promised massive orders.

Even the Trumpers don't seem to know what it means, as not a single one has shown it accomplished anything.

The development of multiple vaccines in record time by the private sector in conjunction with the oversight and support of the Federal government through efficient regulatory supervision and in many cases financial backing and promises of bulk purchases was a huge national success. Why demean such an accomplishment? American vaccination rates are much higher than South Korea and most any place in the world. Thanks to Operation Warp Speed. South Korea was probably a bit complacent with their early successes in controlling the covid virus spread and are now behind in vaccinations.

Sure, I mean BioNTech started working on a vaccine as early as January 2020. By March 2020 they already had 20 vaccine candidates of which 4 were later used for the clinical trials. Only in April 2020 did they sign a partnership with Pfizer which included some investment from Pfizer.

BioNTech did later also receive money from the European Commission and the European Investment Bank as well as from the German government. They did not receive any funding from the US. Pfizer even rejected any kind of money from Operation Warp Speed for the development of the vaccine according to their own CEO. The agreement was merely about the distribution of the vaccine. So no, at least concerning this vaccine Operation Warp Speed had nothing to do with the development itself.

Seoul metropolitan area population pop 25.6M, Tokyo Metro 38M, a look at both metropolitan areas sheds more light on the genuineness of the numbers released by both or an indication of how infectious the virus is, both share alot of similarities notably almost everyone is wearing mask and are not obese and probably most of the population of both metros commutes using a mass transit system, the biggest difference is that one contact traces and encourages people to test whether they have symptoms or not and have set up drive thrus and tests centers all over the place and people are testing without fear of being stigmatized while the other tests is heavily regulated and requires approval from the local welfare center. so which metro area numbers gives a better indication of the spread of the virus or infectiousness of the virus. ?

What is Operation Warp Speed? As far as I can tell, it's another 3-word trumpian chant, like "LOCK HER UP" and "BUILD THE WALL", devoid of any actual meaning or substance. Even the Trumpers don't seem to know what it means, as not a single one has shown it accomplished anything. But they think that we should all react to their dog whistle the way they do.

I've pointed out multiple times that I had as much to do with getting the viruses out quickly as Trump did, because I also wanted it to happen fast.

More evidence that the standard set of responses to the virus and the desire to somehow limit/slow/prevent its spread are just not effective. Until we learn to accept and live with the virus this will indeed be the new normal.
