Sometimes it’s difficult to know if stories you read from Saudi Arabia are satirical. This is taken from the BBC a few years ago:

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye. 

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

I hope women don’t follow this idea when driving....

Any progress is good, but let’s not forget that Saudi women, especially those without the privileged world traveler status of these first drivers, still live with a male boot on their necks. When it eases the pressure slightly we should be encouraged but not elated.

Why care about the rights of these women as many of their compatriots treat foreign workers with the absence of labor rights, payment issues and abuse.

The Saudis might just surprise everyone and start modernizing in leaps and bounds. Nah, on second thought, it doesn't seem very likely.

Many countries have laws and culture which don't allow women the same rights or opportunities as men. I want my daughter to have the same possibilities as anyone else, regardless of which location she happens to be, without limits from laws or culture based on her sex.

Let's be honest, sure "religion" is the culprit, but not all religions are a cause of oppression. In fact most are not. A certain religion is out of place on this planet in the 21st century with no indication of ever wanting to change to the standards of a modern society. instead shackling the society to it's own standards. Good for the women drivers in Saudi Arabia, but there's far far more to go. I'll stay away from asking why nations like this are on the UN Humanitarian Council, or how the US can be "allies" with nations like this while criticizing others. Can of worms...

I am being very honest - ALL religions, including cults who pretend to be religions (no names) have in one or more ways done something to oppress those who don't follow their teachings or believe the nonsense they are peddling. NONE are exempt. And it goes for the atheists and agnostics, too. Believe what you want, stop preaching how others are wrong for not following your way.

I love the irony here. Of course, to apply this to Saudi Arabia is something else. It's a small step in the right direction but it's going to take a paradigm shift in oppressive values and attitudes towards women before we see complete change. Perhaps when people start seeing feminism as a positive force for change, more significant progress can be made.

No, I meant what I said. The religions that are globally accepted as religions, the cults who mask as religions (Scientology), the ones which are just cults (Jonestown, David Koresh, etc), and anything else. I'm not singling out any. I'm saying they are all bad once they start telling people "OUR way is the best/only way."

Saudi Arabia has a long way to go but we shouldn't be so complacent about closer to home.

Women in this country still get treated like trash. We have a jackazz pretending to be POTUS who brags about assaulting women like a 6th grader in the gym class locker room. And Melania posed for BDSM porn. Not so 'progressive', is it?
