I believe the Republican's shot themselves in the proverbial foot here. The Democrats and their supporters are going to use this as fuel in the upcoming elections.
I can't believe he got through.
bass4funk
Actually, it’s the other way around, the left and their antics was this time way over the top. They stirred a hornets nest and it’s showing p. The Democrats also didn’t help themselves aligning and backing up the creepy pon lawyer, it didn’t help their cause one bit, in fact it made it worse.
As well as the GOP.

I knew he would.
kabukideath
Sorry, Schumer, but men and women of sense will forever remember this as the culmination of scorched-earth politics practiced by the left, but overcome by the grace, dignity, and sound political judgment of Senator Susan Collins.
The Republican base is now more unified and energized than they have been in a very long time.
Its a shame what this process became.
FizzBit
I can’t wait until the next time the Dem circus comes back to town. I wonder what kind of clowns we’ll have the next time.

They should make Senators Feinstein and Schumer swear in Justice Kavanaugh.

I was disgusted how many people believed Ford without a shred of evidence! As much as it irks you Trump haters here, fact is, the law and Trump, won. I seriously hope heads will roll on the Democratic side of the fence. They made a mockery of everything decent!

The elected Democrats won the battle of delay and resist. This conformation has taken a lot longer than it should have. It's the only tactic that the elected Democrats have left. However, the voters have spoken. The voters made the Democrats the minority party. Democrat Harry Reid had removed the 60 vote requirement for most federal judges, and the Republicans responded by removing the 60 vote requirement for Supreme Court nominees. Or as Obama said, "Elections have consequences". After all was said and done, the Republicans still had enough votes to confirm Kavanaugh, just as they did when Kavanaugh was first nominated.
OssanAmerica
I'm really not surprised. I totally hate Trump but I was rather dismayed by the lack of substantiation supporting Ford's testimony. But unlike the comfort women issue at least Ford's testimony wasn't contradictory.
theFu
Republicans had no choice but to confirm Kavanaugh. No Senate seat is as important to the party as a single SC Justice.
Matt Hartwell
What candidate would the Democrats have supported that the Republicans would even consider putting forward? Even a female conservative would have struggled.
Wolfpack
The big takeaway for me in this whole fiasco is that conservatives have stood behind the sacrosanct idea that a person is innocent until proven guilty. Dems on the other hand are not constrained by this inconvenient concept. Therefore from now on I will apply the Democrat standard to Democrats and the American standard of innocence until proven otherwise to everyone else. If all non Democrats do this as well perhaps someday they will realize what a huge mistake they have made in an attempt to achieve a short lived victory.
The Lefts bullying tactics failed. Unfortunately it was a close call - they almost got away with it.

With Trump's injudicious selections enabled by a bunch of right-wing geriatrics whose constituents together represent a minority of US citizens, a far-right, partisan SCOTUS has been cemented in place at odds with the views of the majority of American citizens and at the cost of its image and reputation. SCOTUS has reached a new low with the appointment of another creepy groper to the bench who has revealed himself to be a less than credible witness. This yawning crisis of the court's legitimacy will not continue unnoticed by the American people. From now on the gloves must come off and pressure must be applied by the people and their political representatives to remedy the festering partisanship of SCOTUS that is becoming a blatant corporate tool inimical to the interests of the nation. An impeachment to remove the mendacious, weasely Kavanaugh (and his Washington Godfather) would be an excellent place to start.
CrazyJoe
A man elected by a minority of Americans nominates another who will be confirmed by senators representing a minority of Americans. But, the majority has to suffer both.
Tyranny of the minority is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind.

There is really only one lesson to learn here - Putin's efforts to interfere in the US election were successful - he has continued to unleash his army of trolls to inflame division in the US (and elsewhere), with a short term goal of reducing US influence and standing throughout the world, and a longer term goal of having the US "implode from within".
Kavanugh's spectacle shows he is succeeding on both counts.
bass4funk
Not according to the recent polls, the Dems and conservatives are now neck and neck and because the left decided to align themselves with the creepy porn lawyer, it seems the Senate for Dems has slipped their grasp. Democrats are not the only ones enthusiastic about the midterms, now thanks to the weasely Democrats, it’s hitting a fever pitch on the right as well.
Not so so sure now.
Nor is grandstanding, smearing and thinking if you don’t get your way you can bully, intimidate or destroy a person.
Oh, I agree with that,
SaikoPhysco
In the end.... it went along party lines.... the only way we can rid the world of this scourge will be to vote out these Damn Republicans and their hell bent zealous march toward another dark age.
mtuffizi
shame on whoever voted for him.
SaikoPhysco
It isn't about a conviction of anything regarding Kavanaugh..... his reaction alone to allegations.... his tirade alone disqualified him. This is the most lowly person to ever ascend to the level of Supreme Court Justice period. His confirmation is a slap in the face to all that have preceded him. The level of integrity of the whole USA has been decimated.
Haaa Nemui
So much this. I don't think it could have been stopped, but the whole situation should have been handled with much more decency than it was. The accusations couldn't be proved after such a long time and bringing them up at this stage was a Democrat mistake. But they did... and the treatment that both parties have received since has been despicable. This has not done anything good for anyone. The US needs to take a hard look at itself.
MrBum
Neil Gorsuch got through. At the very least not someone accused of attempted rape and who doesn't lie in hearings. Lying should be a deal breaker for judges.
He didn't have to be. It was a job interview, not a criminal case. The exact accusations would have denied him a job at McDonalds. But a lifetime position on the Supreme Court? GOP says OK.
Well, an accused attempted rapist getting a job on the highest court in the country doesn't exactly send a strong rebuking message toward rapists.
Miyam_Musashi
Today, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and former Justice Anthony Kennedy swore Justice Brett Kavanaugh in as an associate justice to the Supreme Court.
Next stop, mid-term elections. If you can vote, vote!

mtuffizi
mistake defined as minor or severe, that is why some people go to jail.
he is lucky because of gop and trump.
Matt Hartwell
It shouldn't. Unless you embrace the idea of guilty until proven innocent which is very clearly the idea the Democrats now embrace. A fundamental tenet of justice overturned by Democrats. Disgusting and disgraceful. Really have no business being in office in a free society if that is the attitude you adopt.
Again. You are presuming guilt. How does presuming the guilt of what could be an innocent man and then ruining their job prospects achieve anything positive? If this is the position Democrats adopt, they should be absolutely smashed with it in coming election campaigns. I certainly hope Republicans target the Democrats on their willingness to overturn what is a fundamental aspect of law and justice in the U.S and elsewhere.
ToshiYori
I hope the message received is: Do not accuse a man of sexual misconduct unless you have evidence of some kind to corroborate your accusation.
I'm an Independent who abhor sexual abuse of any kind, and I would support a Democrat, Republican or member of any other party if he\she is accused of sexual abuse without the "victim" being able to provide tangible evidence or witnesses to support the accusation.
Accusations of sexual abuse and\or harassment without providing proof reminds me too much of my growing up in Mississippi in the 40s and 50s, when the so-called "believe all white women" rule was in effect in Mississippi and other southern states.. In those days, many black males were beaten, jailed or killed after being falsely accused by women of rape, leering, improper gestures, whistling, staring, or any other action considered by the women to be improper conduct. Later, many of the women would admit their accusations were false, but it was much to late to save the accused from being beaten severely, jailed or killed, e.g., "Scottsboro Boys," Emmett Till, etc.
Ah_so
He is a political appointee - nothing more. His legal knowledge is secondary - his job is to vote for conservative causes.

if fbi did a criminal investigation, the outcome will be different. so "the idea of guilty until proven innocent" does not apply to this so-call limited investigation, back ground check.

Matt Hartwell
Not according to his own statements. His job is to uphold the constitution. That's his job according to him.
Whether that means conservatives are happy or liberals are happy depends on the case before him.
seadog538
Has he been convicted of a crime? The woman who is accusing him--has she reported the matter to the Police? If not,why not?
Haaa Nemui
He was chosen because he is a conservative and to give Republicans control of the court.
Matt Hartwell
How do you know? Presuming guilt again? Well of course.
Wolfpack
I find it ironic that Dems fought so hard to stop a nominee who is a relative moderate. He helped to come up with the justification that preserved Obamacare. The guy brags about his affirmative action policy hiring female law clerks. It was sickening listening to his numerous identity based comments during his confirmation hearings. I consider him a poor choice - a potential David Souter in the making. I hope he proves me wrong. Perhaps his horrendous treatment by Dems will push him to the far right. It would serve the Left right.
CrazyJoe
The naked power grab is complete by a party that doesn't even pretend to put the country first. What a disgrace!
Women are less safe in America because the party in power has shown us that it's OK to sexually assault them. The President will make fun of you if you come forward.
bass4funk
Collins and Manchin did. And if you want to talk about a naked grab as bad as many Republicans are, they never stooped to the level the Democrats went in order to destroy a nominee.
What a disgrace!
Like Keith Ellison's ex that filed charges of him assaulting her physically and verbally? The left are champions of women? Tell that to Jones, Broderick, Flowers, Lewinsky, Steinle and all the other women, daughters and mothers that the left completely ignored and continue to do so?
Well, they can always take their case to the Supreme Court.
Laguna
Congrats, GOP! You just lost the women's vote for a generation. And a liar nominating a liar who is then confirmed by a bunch of liars - that is so appropriate for the Repubs.
FizzBit
So, no difference between a campaign slogan and an opinion? Nice logic.
starpunk
Since Trump was PUT IN the WH by PUTIN, he's an illegal President - an usurper. Therefore his endorsement of this sex offender (like himself) is not legitimate. Nothing Trump has done or endorsed is legitimate because he isn't. Therefore the Dems in Congress should act to remove Kavanaugh from power and impeach Donald Trump.
There is nothing legitimate or even legal about of what has happened today. Our Constitution clearly states what the people can do.
Jimizo
Trump seemed to be quite impressed with Ford’s account and then later ridiculed it when speaking to people who make whooping noises at a rally.
I can imagine Kavanaugh must be absolutely hammered by now.
Serrano
Crazy: "Women are less safe in America because the party in power has shown us that it's OK to sexually assault them"
That is false and you know it. Shameful. What is true though is the party in power has shown us that in America you are still innocent before being proven guilty. This could change however if the Dems regain power and stack the courts with liberals.
Wallace Fred
Couldn't resist that token comfort women dig in huh? Burying your head in the sand and denying historical fact will not remove that said fact.
Jimizo
That’s true but I was thinking about something else. I remember listening to a podcast about Trump where someone mentioned how he’s managed to create what the speaker described as a “wormhole” in politics. Trump is able to throw out barking mad conspiracy theories, unfounded trash, lies which don’t even have enough effort to be believable, contradict himself in the space of minutes and people just move on, with a “well, that’s just Trump”.
The example mentioned in my last post is just another example.

The Avenger
When Trump claims that the Kavanaugh confirmation is a great victory for America, what he really means is that it is a great victory for himself and his half of the country over the half of the country that opposed Kavanaugh. If the president is happily gloating about helping to cleave this nation in two, he is not a President of the United States. He is a chieftain of a tribe.
A divided nation is ultimately, inevitably, a weaker nation. Apparently, this is what Trump wants. It also happens to be what Putin wants. Trump is a traitor to the U.S.A.
CrazyJoe
If you don't want a politicized SCOTUS, don't force SCOTUS to decide political questions. Most of the contentious issues cited have been decided in other countries through legislation, not court rulings.
Changing how society works is a job for Congress, not a junta of five octogenarians.

Firstly, a few thousand protesters on the streets among a population 300+ million doesn't indicate to me what the country as a whole thinks about the issue, one way or the other.
If you are referring to women, you should keep in mind that 53% of white women that voted, voted for Trump and you should also keep in mind this article from the beloved leftist rag known as the Guardian.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/06/women-arent-a-monolith-and-the-white-women-supporting-kavanaugh-prove-it
Tokyo-Engr
Well; this one is in the books. At this point, if Kavanaugh is to be removed it would need to be by impeachment. Most likely this will require Ms. Ford (or someone) to press charges against Kavanaugh. Only one justice has been impeached in the history of the U.S. and I think it would be quite difficult to impeach Kavanaugh.
I am wondering what has happened to the allegations the NY Times has made against Trump? I know Americans have terribly short attention spans but geeze......perhaps the lawyers have put the hush on it.
Now it will be interesting to see how Kavanaugh weighs in on the issues and how he writes his opinions
Toasted Heretic
The Guardian is liberal, at best. It's certainly not leftist.
It's not a big surprise that Trump received votes from women and evangelicals. Religion is a mass of contradictions and like the GOP - will always have its adherents. The issue has become partisan.
You left out a far more interesting point:
That last line – “It can happen to you” – would seem to apply much more to Ford’s fate than Kavanaugh’s where moms are concerned, since one in three women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime and perpetrators are overwhelmingly male.

President Donald Trumps ROCKS!

The Supreme Court has now become indistinguishable from the Executive and the Legislative (whose GOP caucus has abrogated its responsibility as a check on the Executive). The court is now a thoroughly partial entity to do the bidding of the Republican Party, but more especially the special interests of the super rich. Judicial Crisis Network put the money behind blocking Obama's moderate pick. A vast majority of that money, $28 million worth, came from a single unknown donor. Trump then outsourced his SCOTUS search to the Federalist Society, whose prominent donors include the Kochs and the Mercers. One wonders what interest rich people would have in effectively buying SCOTUS justices. Maybe rulings like Citizens United that give them an even stronger hand in determining who can do what in America?
(And don't even bring up George Soros paying the Kavanaugh protesters. That is BS. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/no-george-soros-isnt-paying-kavanaugh-protesters/?utm_term=.9707127e909b)
There needs to be a complete overhaul of how justices are chosen and vetted. There also should be term limits on tenure. (I've believed this for years.) There should be bipartisan support for such reforms, as they would alleviate a lot of the acrimony that plagues American politics. Unless one thinks the self interest of the rich and powerful is more important.
1glenn
Ignoring the accusations of gross misconduct, Kavanaugh's testimony on TV in front of the whole world, in which he claimed a vast left-wing conspiracy, involving the Clintons, was out to get him, and wherein he pledged to get revenge in the decades to come, is much, much more than enough to disqualify him from any judgship. His behavior on TV was utterly disgraceful and unacceptable. This is a very low time for America, when such an unqualified individual would be placed on the Supreme Court.
u_s__reamer
Plasticmonkey has diagnosed exactly what ails the US justice system corrupted by moneyed interests that can buy and sell politicians to undermine the foundations of democracy. The present constitution of SCOTUS with its venal right-wing ideologues legislating from the bench in the interests of plutocrats and corporations while riding roughshod over the rights of the individual is a travesty of due process and mocks the concept of equal justice for all. Being no longer fit for purpose, SCOTUS should be purged of its blatant partisanship and thoroughly reformed by Congress to reflect a higher standard of justice for all. The one good to come out of the shambolic nomination process of another of Trump's flunkies is that the all-too-human justices no longer appear so squeaky clean with their halos skewed; the tarnished image of SCOTUS might even pave the way to draining the Washington swamp of politics and dirty dollars, but first the women of America must vote their fury in November and make Trump and his cult followers feel the painful consequences of their perfidy.

Buy, yeah, that’s a new one, but it is funny.
Really? I think we should talk about the devil and all that surround him.
The woman protester that confronted Flake in the elevator and gave an academy performance is “Ana Maria Archila,” is the executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy in New York.
Now who are these people?
The Center for Popular Democracy is an American advocacy group that promotes progressive politics. CPD is a federation of groups that includes some of the old chapters of ACORN.The group's stated goal is to "envision and win an innovative pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. The organization is allied with teachers’ unions and has published studies criticizing charter schools.
Well, who funds them?
CPD has received funding from the Bauman Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Democracy Alliance, and the Open Society Foundations.
Ford Foundation In 2003, the foundation was critiqued by US news service Jewish Telegraphic Agency, among others, for supporting Palestinian nongovernmental organizations that were accused of promoting antisemitism.
Bauman Foundation A leader in the burgeoning progressive movement, David Brock is the founder and CEO of Media Matters for America, a progressive media research and information center dedicated to holding our news media accountable. David's leadership at Media Matters has had a profound impact on the national media debate.
Democracy Alliance As of 2015, the Democracy Alliance, which does not disclose its membership, is reported to have about 110 partners who are required to contribute at least $200,000 a year to groups it vets and recommends. Members include Tom Steyer and some of the U.S.'s biggest labor unions. It has recommended that its donors financially support the Black Lives Matter movement. Gara LaMarche is the president of the Democracy Alliance. LaMarche, a longtime progressive activist and close ally of George Soros, assumed the post in 2013. Prior to LaMarche's hiring, Hillary Clinton aide Kelly Craighead led the Alliance. Howard Dean has previously been considered as a potential president for the Democracy Alliance. The board of directors for the Democracy Alliance includes John Stocks, Patricia Bauman, Paul Egerman, Weston Milliken, Gara LaMarche, Mary Kay Henry, David desJardins, Nick Hanauer, Farhad Ebrahimi, Josh Fryday, Keith Mestrich, Fran Rodgers, Susan Sandler and Rob Stein.
Open Society Foundations (OSF), formerly the Open Society Institute, is an international grantmaking network founded by business magnate George Soros. Open Society Foundations financially support civil society groups around the world, with a stated aim of advancing justice, education, public health and independent media.
Not only are you wrong, but Soros as dangerous as he is and as typical has his grimy mitts in everything and this woman is testimony to that and thank God, Flake didn’t fall for it and listened to this woman. These are the radicalists of radicals, these people are totally anti-American, they will do whatever it takes to destroy and overturn the constitution. Soros is the biggest threat domestically followed by China and then Russia.

The only thing more disgusting than Kavanaugh's appointment despite his deep, disqualifying weaknesses is the way his fan club has been crowing about it without being able to think of even a single reason why he should have been rushed through his hearings and investigation as he was. No one can say even a single concrete thing he brings to the Supreme Court other than partisan ideology, which is not what SCOTUS is meant for. His fans just like him because he upsets their critics.
Kavanaugh's appointment is a middle finger from the Republicans and their corrupt special interests to America, fed by people who want to divide the country.

Showing he’s human?
Probably for the opposite reason of Democrats trying to delay, delay, delay and destroy this man.
And you think that for the last 50 years having a liberal activist leaning Court was ok? If you were, millions of us weren’t. I think fair is fair and over the last 50 years liberals enjoyed having the courts that so often ruled on issues that have rubbed many of us the wrong way, now for the next 20-40 the left can wear the other shoe.
No, we like him because he’s a constitutionalist and he is equal to Garland in his rulings with the exception that he’s more conservative, so that should quiet a bunch on the left that still have heartburn about him not being chosen.
The left did that by trying to derail this nomination and by using the courts to pass their faulty legislation that they virtually otherwise could never get through Congress. The middle finger now will be Kavanaugh who will no doubt have the last laugh as now the tie breaker on the courts. The left went too far this time, they totally destroyed this man, ruined his family and now that he’s confirmed, the left has no chance of reversing this, that is, if they respect the rule of law and the constitution. The Democrats thought they were so smart and this latest scheme like so many before, totally blew up in their face and now they have teed off conservative across the country, even the Republicans that weren’t on the Trump bandwagon, they are united and the gap between the two parties is closing and getting tighter depends on the polls, but between 2-5, that’s very bad for Democrats because you just might see a red wave coming towards the left.

Mr. Miyagi
Umm, Merrick Garland? He's easily one of the most neutral judges to ever be nominated to be on the SCOTUS.
The whole "unless you embrace the idea of guilty until proven innocent" is such a horrible argument to make. Innocent until proven guilty only applies to criminal and civil cases, last time I checked, this was a job interview.
We can presume guilt as much as we want. What's going to happen? Are we going to get sued? Good luck, it's nearly impossible to get past a motion to dismiss on any defamation case that involves a public figure. This is no different then us presuming you're a Nazi. If I was interviewing you and heard you were a Nazi, I for sure would look into the allegations more before hiring you. Doesn't matter if they are true or not, you shouldn't push through a vote when there's such serious allegations hanging out in the open for the public.
He may have said he will uphold the constitution with his oath, however, his past statements say otherwise. He has taken the stance to completely ignore jurisprudence of the Court–that should be deeply disturbing to all Americans.

Russia, China, Iran, and the treasonous Trump are all working together to take down the USA from within. No invasion needed.

Unless you embrace the idea of guilty until proven innocent which is very clearly the idea the Democrats now embrace. A fundamental tenet of justice overturned by Democrats. Disgusting and disgraceful

Uncovered emails, smashed HDs, text messages from her and a treasure goldmine from Podesta... Yeah, there’s a lot of tangible evidence.

all hearsay no proof thatll stick in court, Trump should get the corrupt FBI to do a 1 week investigation with the report not to be released to anybody, that should shut the conspiracy theorist up. You know innocent until proven guilty and all.

McConnel is wrong. See what happens at ballot box. Voters know birds of the same feather only flock together. Voters are always more wise than politicians. politicians are poloticians! Mr Trump drama is clear it seems Kavanaughs might have helped as tax administrators of his father jointly misused by underestimating his realestate, real estate magnates every where cheat, so our friend Trumps who cheated the New York state tax revenue, Trumps seem to have cheated 50 % of tax revenue then that means Trumps are most unworthy persons to call themselves as citizens of New York so too, of the US. But how fitting Trump to be as president of US is anybody's guess!

Blimey, I don't visit the site for a few days and suddenly there are a ton of 'right'eous posters that seem to have appeared out of nowhere. Will make things around here a bit more interesting in future now the voting seems to be on an equal footing between the loopy left and the idiotic right.
Fighto!!!

There were plenty of honorable conservatives they could have chosen from. Kava is a disgrace and an embarrassment.

Care to be more dramatic and ridiculous? I think you can do better.
