Trump announced that he will stop conducting U.S. military "war games" with ally South Korea while negotiations between the two countries continue.

Big win for NK and China.

7 ( +18 / -11 )

'Hey, I was wrong.'" But he said, "I don't know that I'll ever admit that." already setting himself up to fail, if it fails he can always blame it on Obama since he should have done it 5yrs ago. LOL

Big win for NK and China.

stopping war practices is a big win? If NK denuclearizes its a win for the world

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

It was a good start. Lots of smiles and handshakes which is a good thing. Meeting also humanizes the other side.

But yeah, Trump gave concessions and got nothing in return, which I was worried about. And Congress just blocked Trump’s deal with ZTE so we will see if Trump goes to bat for the Chinese here as well, and I suspect he will.

14 ( +17 / -3 )

And Congress just blocked Trump’s deal with ZTE so we will see if Trump goes to bat for the Chinese here as well, and I suspect he will. $500million loan and Ivankas trademarks on the line , oh he'll go to bat for sure.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

It was a good start

Yep. Too early for laps of honour or shouts of failure.

Certainly sounded better than his potty-throwing and smacked-arse face G7 debacle.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

I’m good with all that, but I’m not a big believer in Trump or Kim. Time will show whether this was a publicity stunt or a turning point.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

The signed document produced nothing more than what we've achieved before. So the jury is out on whether this will actually lead to results. I don't see the letters CVID in there. Just saw Trump talking about ending US/SK joint exercises. South Korea is like...huh??

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Mission accomplished?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

If the media questions him for giving concessions with nothing in return there's a chance he will go all Mr. Tough Guy on Twitter and make things sideways again.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Step one complete. If Kim backtracks, then Trump has the justification and with the approval of China, to finish the job off Militarily.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

They signed something that clarified absolutely nothing, how and when to denuclearize?

9 ( +12 / -3 )

It’s soooooo much more easier to seal deals when you fly pallets of cash secretly in the middle of the night.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

give it some time - the kinetic options will always exist but before that you gotta give peace & diplomacy a chance

3 ( +3 / -0 )

TRUMP 2020!

-19 ( +2 / -21 )

Finally Trump has met his match. With the possible exception of Chris Christie, Trump just hasn't bumped into anyone as horizontally challenged as himself.....until now. Great!

I hear Trump wanted to help Kim develop some special economic zones in North Korea where they can build factories to make Trump ties and Ivanka shoes.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

In exchange for growth and protection, North Korea won big.

Trump will provide them with trade just like the US did for Japan and South Korea few decades ago.

US keeps full control of the area and North Korea develops its economy.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

In exchange for growth and protection, North Korea won big.

US keeps full control of the area and North Korea develops its economy.

Yes, and it means the nutters in Washington are now free to launch their next resource war in the Middle East. One imagines the Iranians will have viewed the circus in Singapore with mixed feelings.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Big win for Trump, no concessions, no money given like that disastrous Iran deal, Small incremental steps. Good job, Mr. President.

-12 ( +6 / -18 )

Personally I am waiting until we hear what was supposedly written in those binders, until I know more its only pure speculation.

At least they didn't screw up the meet, that's all I can see from where I am sitting!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Big win for Trump, no concessions, no money given like that disastrous Iran deal, Small incremental steps. Good job, Mr. President.

I could not have said it better. No more Presidents giving billions to rouge terrorist nations. Hold off on doing expensive military drills while NK denuclearizes.

Total win for the Us and the world

-15 ( +3 / -18 )

Temporary suspension of war games/drills doesn't mean giving them up permanently. If things start to go south, they will be back on again

There will have to be a number of more meetings and negotiations and personally I don't see how they would be possible while you have war games going on.

Would you negotiate the end of your nuclear program with the U.S and South Korea conducted war games involving dozens of fighters, ships, whatever? I'd be thinking the minute I give up these nukes its going to be on. I'm toast. They are practicing for invasion. That's how I would perceive it. So yeah, I'm not sure Trump had a choice if he wants to push the process forward.

Now the ball is in N.Korea's court. We need to see on the ground action in dismantling their program and weapons and international monitoring teams let inside North Korea fairly fast.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Not accurate. Trump has given Chairman Kim the concession of ending the American South Korean war games, hated by Kim ad also Chinese President Xi.

But it has nothing to do with the troops leaving, entirely different issue. There is NO way on Gods green earth that SK, Japan, the State Department and the Pentagon would make such a move, maybe years down the line once Kim has dismantled every single nuke and its verifiable and the two Koreas are possible unified, then and only then you can talk about troop reduction, but before that, never will happen.

In typically real estate mode, Trump handed an Ipad with a keynote showing how North Korea would look like with luxury hotels and condos and Trump suggested to Chairman Kim, he'll help billet them.

Smart on the President, carrot stick approach.

This evening all the media news in South Korea is about Trump's decision to end the war games.

That’s SK, they’ll get over it.

Another concession Trump gave Chairman Kim was to give him security guarantees if he gives up his nukes.

Yes, if he does. You have to start with something.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

Hold off on doing expensive military drills while NK denuclearizes

Trump supporters worried about military spending?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

In exchange for growth and protection, North Korea won big.

Trump will provide them with trade just like the US did for Japan and South Korea few decades ago.

US keeps full control of the area and North Korea develops its economy.

Perhaps that is the aim.

I notice China already discussing the "possibility of lifting sanctions" but I cant see that yet.

I think the next step will be emergency aid for N.Korea, food and fuel, which Trump kind of hinted at in return for N.Korea releasing people in labor camps, which makes Trump look good and N.Korea start dismantling their program with verifiable steps which will require international inspectors to come in and watch the process. That last part will be crucial.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Its astounding how little the lefty naysayers understand about diplomacy. Its as if they think the world operated like a hollywood movie.

todays first steps are nothing short of amazing! Who would have imagined it ever happening?

Trump made it happen. More to come!

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Another concession Trump gave Chairman Kim was to give him security guarantees if he gives up his nukes.

Potentially code for.....come and join us my friend and we can begin this reunification deal for real

Your security is guaranteed by becoming an alliance partner.....weirder things have happened.

Look at the members of NATO...

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Not according to Trump who was very clear on that. I actually watched the entire press conference so I know what Trump stated.

Doesn't matter, the Pentagon will always be there, the President is only for one or two terms. Not going to happen. Hey, let’s drive 210 km in the rain with no seatbelts. Come on...ROFL.

But yes the war games will end immediately but the withdraw of troops will take longer but according to Trump it will happen probably once the nukes are put beyond use which could happen with a year.

Not within a year, more like maybe once the two Koreas are united and that can take years and SK doesn’t want to pay the cost that would come with unification.

Nukes after about 20% of dismantling reach a point of no return but still takes years to complete.

Well, our forces have more than enough time.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

How on earth can any of you see this negatively.

The US has lost nothing. Those of you who say calling off war games is a terrible loss are the same ones who said the US was bad for having them and it was bullying and Kim had to have nukes because of that threat.

This is just a remarkable first step. Is the situation more dangerous than during the 8 Obama years? What happened then? Nothing - except for 8 years NK was developing its nuclear weapons.

Trump is saying everything right. When you go to a summit like this what is he supposed to say? I don’t believe him? Denuclearize in a week or else?

If Obama was in Singapore doing the same thing, people would be weeping and saying how Obama has done what Bush couldn’t.

I have high hopes for this. And nobody would remember, but I predicted the summit would go ahead.

A few weeks ago, people were saying Trump was terrible for pulling out.

Well it all went well.

NObody knows for sure what will happen in the future. But it’s worth a try.

You don’t always get want you want in a day.

So I’ll make another prediction. By Dec 31st, you will all be amazed at the progress made.

In fact, I’ll go out on a limb. At least one Japanese will be returned - whether alive or the VERIFIABLE remains.

Inspectors will be allowed in to verify denuclearization, and Kim will visit the White House.

And there won’t be any more missiles shot over Japan.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

I am still shaking my head in amazement at how Trump far exceeded expectation with todays deal. He is a born dealmaker, everyone should read his book “The Art of The Deal” and understand how he can negotiate so well. Liberals and Obama supporters now have their tail between the legs! They said this could never happen.

Today will go down in history as bigger even then when Reagan ordered the Soviet Union “Tear down that Wall!” Kim-san and Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize 2018.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

You know Trump must have done something right when the left wing Huffington Post puts up stories about what a big failure the summit was and then DISABLES THE COMMENTS on those stories so nobody can respond...

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

So you would defy the wishes of your president.

No, Trump is pragmatic and on this, he definitely listens to Bolton and Pompeo, one worked for the UN and State Department and the other for the CIA and served in the military, add Kelly and Mattis to the mix, I’m sure they advises Trump on the necessity of us being there.

Usually given your recent comments since he took office.

There will be no united Koreas. President Xi and Putin are opposed

Well, the bases will be there indefinitely then, at least for the foreseeable future.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

"We didn't put it down in the document but it will be worked out,"

Yeah ... like the Mexican Border wall. I won't be holding my breath waiting.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

So to recap, Donald Trump convinced his followers that the Iran nuclear deal, the most comprehensive deal ever signed by multiple countries, had to be torn up because it should have covered even more.

Now those same followers are cheering because Trump signed the diplomatic equivalent of a cocktail napkin with the only serial liar on the planet less trustworthy than Trump himself.

Unbelievable.

Trumpkins will believe anything. The most gullible people on earth.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Not a bad day for Trump and Kim. Different story for Abe who's (most probably) legitimately disappointed with today's outcome re abductees (or lack thereof). He's even less relevant tonight than he was 24h ago which is a tour de force in itself.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Ganbarre Japan! Im with you on that!

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

There will be no united Koreas. President Xi and Putin are opposed

You do realize that in the end, if both Korea's and their people decide they want reunification then there is nothing anybody can do about it, that includes the U.S, Japan, China or Russia.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

"Trump said that the U.S. will remove the sanctions already in place when they're assured that the nuclear weapons "are no longer a factor.""

And zero mention of the abduction issue.

"But Trump said without Warmbier's death, his meeting with Kim may not have happened. He said, "Otto did not die in vain.""

Wow... talk about spitting on someone's grave after pretending to care and using them for political purposes already. I wonder if the people who screamed about his death when Trump put on further sanctions before will suddenly support Trump's praise of the man's death.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

As much as I can't stand Trump, Will give credit where credit is due. but for those saying that Trump gave up nothing.... Cancelling military drills with an ROK, well, that is sort of giving some concessions.

Big win for Trump, no concessions, no money given like that disastrous Iran deal, Small incremental steps. Good job, Mr. President.

Yeah, but Bass, if that were Obama, you would call him a weak leader and selling out 'Merica.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

SuperLib: "Big win for NK and China"

What about SK and the rest of the world? Especially SK - people in and around Seoul will not have to worry about dying from NK rocket fire or a nuke.

smith: "And zero mention of the abduction issue"

It was raised in their meeting, smith. But ultimately it is something that must be resolved by NK and Japan.

Oh my...

The Korea Summit Was Successful and Trumps Critics Sound Insane Trying to Deny That

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

And zero mention of the abduction issue.

Yes, on their first meeting, he should dive into that topic, thank God Liberals aren’t running this show.

Wow... talk about spitting on someone's grave after pretending to care and using them for political purposes already.

He didn’t, but liberals will see whatever they want, thankfully, the Warmbier family and Trump are close.

I wonder if the people who screamed about his death when Trump put on further sanctions before will suddenly support Trump's praise of the man's death.

Oh, twisted. No one wished for anyone’s death. Come on.....lol

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Trump got nothing in return, just as I had feared.

And neither did the Koreans. No buckets of money and no easing on the sanctions.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

There he is in that Jesus Christ pose again, promoting himself. Ha ha, charade you are, Spanky Don.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

@starpunk

That pic says it all. " Look at me". Donny satisfying his ego.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Well, I don't believe that NK would fully denuclearize. I'm pretty sure Kim doesn't want to be the next Gaddafi. We all know these American "guarantees" are useless.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

How 'nice' that Trump chummily praises Kim, someone responsible for starving, torturing, and killing his own people, while taking potshots at an American ally like Trudeau.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

This is great news... and of course everyone has to come through with their promises.

However even the photo Trump on this site of is negative for Trump.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

If you think new ground has been broken in the denuclearization wording of the current agreement, it can only be by choosing to ignore what North Korea has said in exactly the same way many, many times before.

What you're ignoring is how those agreements were all broken by the US. Read up on it.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Wow, TDS is still rampant. No matter how clear the Trump success, the TDS sufferers and CNN believers will contort it into some sort of failure.

It has gone from sad to funny to truly bizarre, imho

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

North Korea used precisely the same language in this agreement that it's always used about denuclearization, going back to 1992.

Yep.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Looks like Trump decided to stop the drills without notice or input from South Korea or the US military. I hope he didn't decide on the spot to give a concession.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

At least the immediate outcome isn’t a disaster. Kim did get a high level meeting with the US President and a suspension of the annual joint exercises with the South. America got a very, very public commitment to denuclearize and movement on returning the remains of upwards of 5,000 servicemen from the Korean War. If Trumps gets that from from Kim without giving up the farm it could be worth it even if things eventually go south.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Wow! Whats up with all the pessimistic posters?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And a one and a two...

One. Trump also pushed back on criticism that the U.S. has gotten little in return for his meeting with Kim, saying that he "gave up nothing."

If you give up nothing, then you get nothing. That's kinda what a deal is. You'd think the guy known for having someone ghost write a book for him titled The Art of the Deal would know that. Here's something that guy did write that Trump should also remember:

"For starters, I keep a lot of balls in the air, because most deals fall out, no matter how promising they seem at first. ... But if you can't deliver the goods, people will eventually catch on."

-- The Art of the Deal, Tony Schwartz

Two: He [Trump] says "it's not a big deal" for world leaders to meet with the president of the United States.

RIiiiiight, It's no big deal for Kim, because is insn't like he now has visual evidence of being taken seriously by the world's most powerful nation.  None at all.

But, the same goes Trumpy. There's no way around it:. Trump, he can now point to his Trog base to something he has done that none of his predecessors did. Unfortunately for American, and her real, not imaginary, friends, like Japan, that thing he got was a big FU to Japan and a promise for a future promise.

And I'm calling it: this will amount to nothing. Because any 'denuclurization' of the Korean peninsula will require the US doing so too, which means no nuclear vessels, which means no bases, which mean no deal.

Once again, Trump sacrifices essential US interest for temporary boost to Trump. Just like with recognizing Jerusalem, when the US got nothing; Trump threw a bone to his right wing Christian base. Here, Trump gets a nice photo op --the only thing he and his Trog base understand, in exchange for a promise for a future promise.

IOW Nothing.

Just remember Trump's reply when asked during the campaign about all his bankrupcies:

"Stop saying I went bankrupt. I never went bankrupt but like many great business people have used the laws to corporate advantage—smart!"

Smart! He did fine! Huzzah. His companies....Look Scary Muslim!!!!!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

No matter how clear the Trump success, the TDS sufferers and CNN believers will contort it into some sort of failure.

I think everybody can agree that it was clearly a successful photo op.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Trump believes N Korea will denuclearize

Kim believes he convinced someone he had nukes.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The leftist/anti-US/Trump-haters are amazing! Can't believe the negativism on this and related threads. The fact that this Summit meeting happened under Trump and not when Obama and Hillary were in office has them seething with hatred and jealousy.

They say dialogue was needed. It happened. Now they say it was empty and meaningless (on Trump's part).

You all said joint US-SK military drills should be stopped. Trump agreed to halt the exercises for the duration of summit.....just as you wanted. Now you're saying he conceded too quickly.

Trump says meeting with Kim went well and expresses optimism, and you all say he's lying.

This was a first summit meeting; you can't realistically expect agreements to denuclearize, demilitarize, withdraw (of US forces), signed peace treaty, unification of the two Koreas in a single meeting. Yet some say because all wasn't achieved, the meeting was a failure and it was all Trump's fault.

But let's see how it plays out in the forthcoming future meetings.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

There will be no united Koreas. President Xi and Putin are opposed

A more accurate statement would be: There will be no unified Koreas under a democratic government aligned with Japan, Taiwan and US as President Xi and Putin are opposed to that kind of unification.

But if the two Koreas are unified under DPRK regime and aligned to China and Russia, Xi and Putin would be all in favour and supportive. Of course, the US and allies would oppose.

So where does that leave unification aspirations?

...but the withdraw of troops will take longer but according to Trump it will happen probably once the nukes are put beyond use which could happen with a year.

Speaking of withdraw of US troops from the Peninsula, wouldn't it be anticlimatic if they were relocated to Okinawa and mainland Japan?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Halwick: The leftist/anti-US/Trump-haters are amazing! Can't believe the negativism on this and related threads. The fact that this Summit meeting happened under Trump and not when Obama and Hillary were in office has them seething with hatred and jealousy.

If something good comes out of this then I'll be happy, regardless as to my personal feelings about Trump. I think though that what rankles a lot of liberals/progressives is the way that so many Trump supporters have embraced the idea of Trump and Kim Jong Un meeting, while Obama was roundly criticized by the right for even suggesting he'd do the same.

Often, the very idea of talking with adversaries was painted as inherently soft. Sen Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) was typical when he blasted Obama’s plan for “a nuclear arms control agreement with a sworn enemy.”

But hey, at least some conservatives are willing to concede that there are definitely some double standards at play.

“I’m not certain why meeting with Kim without preconditions is suddenly a grand coup when we would have gone nuts had Obama done the same,” said conservative pundit Ben Shapiro, who criticized Obama back in 2009 and is now often critical of Trump.

National Review’s Jim Geraghty wondered the same. “Remember how much we condemned then-senator Barack Obama’s pledge to ‘meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?’ That wasn’t wrong,” Geraghty wrote.

It'd probably go a long way towards easing inter-party tensions if more of the right would admit to all of the double standards rather than trying to pretend they never said the things they did and that they actually treated our last president with even a modicum of respect.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

He is right "he gave up nothing". So why not see about negotiating peace. Trump's opponents obviously will do their best to make it look like American is loosing face but the truth is... really, who cares. The bottom line are the results and so far Trump is doing a great job. The Right in the USA constantly derided Obama, so now it is the Left's turn to do the same on Trump. The problem is.... the Left hate Trump so much that even if he is doing something stupendously good, they will want to see it fail. Same for the Right. The good thing about Trump... he does it anyway. This is why I'm a Trump convert.... he does not listen and does what he thinks is right.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

This is a victory for Kim and the world and Trump is riding Kim's coat tails on this one.

Kim initiated contact and is being accepted internationally as an equal to all other world leaders.

Kim has already won concessions while apparently giving up nothing yet.

Trump being his normal self is trying to take credit for Kim's breakthrough.

We will see what happens from here, but if all goes well expect a Trump tower hotel to spring up in NK's capital, and trump branded goods for sale in stores across the country. Made in China & North Korea.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Smithinjapan, I think Trump was trying to give some comfort to the Warmbier family. But, as always, the left uses anything to bash him.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Saikopsycho, exactly.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Well he works at the pleasure of the president and I think that they will hold off for now depending on how the North Koreans conduct themselves and if they don’t start the process of denuclearization, then the military games will resume, it’s that simple

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Trump claims victory when the credit belongs to Kim and President Moon.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I think though that what rankles a lot of liberals/progressives is the way that so many Trump supporters have embraced the idea of Trump and Kim Jong Un meeting, while Obama was roundly criticized by the right for even suggesting he'd do the same.

I have to agree that Dems have a legitimate beef in the reaction by the Right to Trump meeting with Kim compared to the mere suggestion that Obama would be willing to meet with dictators like Kim and the Iranian Ayatollah. But what’s new? Every time the party’s change places in power the two sides effortlessly switch their talking points.

Republicans had similar complaints about how Dems treated Obama compared to Bush. Remember how Obama called Bush’s deficits u.n.-American and then promptly ran up more debt than all Presidents before him combined? Probably not. Politicians are counting on their partisans short memories and ability to take conflicting positions based on whether or not it’s their guy in charge.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Trump essentially got Kim to the table by telling him his country will get blowed up if he messes around.

I'm sure that offer still stands.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Big win for Trump, no concessions, no money given, LOL hardly a murderous dictator gets to stay in power , those NK nukes will be far from free, big win for Kim as hes legitimately treated as a world leader now, many world leaders haven't even met a US president one on one.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

You guys are being ridiculous.

It was an initial meeting. It’s normal for Trump to say nice things at such an event. Hopefully both parties are working towards peace.

Trump has said previously all the things mentioned - the betrayals, the human rights violations etc. But this summit wasn’t the time for that. If we would have talked about past deceptions and human rights you would have been saying how undiplomatic and inept he was and how he was wrecking the summit.

As for the war games being too much of a concession? All I’ve heard previously is how poor Kim needs nukes because bully America is the aggressor intimidating NK with war games.

Trump never said there will never be any more exercises. He never said US troops will pull out this year. He’s trying to show goodwill - which is what you do.

Trump is trying. Just like Clinton and others did. Just unfortunate that he has to deal with such ridiculous criticism.

Now

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Trump is trying. Just like Clinton and others did.

Good on him. He's actually acting presidential in that regards.

Just unfortunate that he has to deal with such ridiculous criticism.

He has invited that criticism. He himself criticized previous presidents, even though he is now in the same position the previous presidents were. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't get to just make statements, and then have everyone forget them. This is something that people qualified for the job already understand, and therefore go out of their way to avoid. He doesn't get a pass simply because he is unqualified for the position. These are real-world issues, and whether he likes it or not, he is going to be judged in the real world.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Reagan and Gorbachev this ain't. Maybe now Ivanka will have sweatshop labor in NK making her fashion clothes line. She'll be so glad her daddy/boyfriend talked with Kim. And Trump the Traitor now says NK isn't a problem. Does he really believe we're so stupid to believe his lies after all his immature histrionics this past year? If he gets to build a Trump hotel in Pyongyang then we'll know. Greedy scumbag.

That pic says it all. " Look at me". Donny satisfying his ego.

Christianity and Islam have described megalomaniacs who pose like this. It's called 'Anti-Christ'. Then again, with his attitude towards certain ethnic groups and religions, PTSD veterans, disabled people, women and such - he's not suitable to even be talked with. He had to have needed a translator when he was with Kim. They're 2 scumbag dictators.

“This evening all the media news in South Korea is about Trump's decision to end the war games.”

So in August there were going to be military exercises. He called them off? And that’s the end of the world?

If things don’t go well he can always put them on again. This was an historic first summit. Everything is conditional on how things go from here.

Suddenly, everyone’s gone from being opposed to military exercises close to North Korea, to being outraged that one of them has been called off during this initial negotiating time.

A lot of South Koreans are extremely happy about the summit.
