I am more than a little dumbfounded. The Taliban has been periodically blowing up scores of innocent people throughout the entirety of the peace talks.
Did trump just notice this?
Probably just as well, given his apparent inability to keep it a secret.
Nobnaga
he wanna sell them weapons so they can send more troops to Pakistan to get more money lol
Omachi
With Trump, it is hard to know if there was a meeting scheduled that could be called off, or if it was just another tweeted lie. Not that this would matter to his supporters...

Camp David?! Trump might as well take the Taliban to Disney Land and Six Flags while he's at it. Maybe bring Kim Jong Un and Putin along. Oh, and Duterte and . . .
TheLongTermer
so what do you suggest? More troops sent to Afghan, perpetually? Just like China, this has to stop someday. People like you make lots of noise and blame, but never get anything done

I doubt it. Pretty sure he's been appraised of the situation all along. I don't doubt you're dumbfounded though.

Its a secret meeting. That means it never really existed. Also, it’s a secret meeting meaning if it happened or it was canceled, we would never know so no need to report on it. Lastly, no one knows what the real reasons were for canceling.

I am more than a little dumbfounded. The U.S. government under Trump has been periodically blowing up scores of innocent people throughout the entirety of the war.
Did the Taliban ever notice this?
No ceasefire agreement has been reached.

@TheLongTermer ". . . this has to stop someday."
You're right. It does have to stop someday. Unfortunately, the way this president is conducting himself as commander-in-chief looks like a whipped dog with its tail between its legs. Yes, the troops have to leave, but they should leave with dignity, especially when you consider how many soldiers from various countries sacrificed their lives.
Furthermore, for Trump to schedule such a meeting on U.S. soil around 9/11 is a display of his lack of intelligence. Besides, the last thing anybody wants to see is the U.S. president between the Taliban on September 11th on American soil with that stupid grin of his holding 2 thumbs up. Then later Trump'll nominate himself for the Nobel Prize or the American Medal of Freedom. What a ridiculous goofball he is!

Taliban can sit it out longer than Trump.
D'ya think President Buttigieg can handle it?
Serrano
History shows for than 200 years, no country can defeat the Afghan fighters.
So you're saying Buttigieg can't handle it? With all his military experience?
He wasn't required to
Too bad, would have done him some good.
Cricky
Not so secret now.
bass4funk
Yes, they have.
No.
Trump wants to get out, most of America wants out, we will have a residual force present, but for the most part, this President is keeping his promise and calling our troops home. About time the Afghanis fend for themselves.
bass4funk
Doesn't matter, the point is, he didn’t serve.
Jimizo
Absolutely massive.
Buttigieg is a patriot. Trump sells patriotism like places at his fake university.
A slimy, cowardly con artist. The army might have made a decent man out of him.
juminRhee
Actually it was Pakistan harbouring al Qaeda. Saudis who committed 9-11. But US didn't invade them. Afghanistan and iraq are the 2 countries that surround iran...that's probably the reason US went there.
Chip Star
The "point" is obligation. Obama was never under any obligation to join the military, but Donny was and avoided it.
lincolnman
Trump called off the treaty with the Taliban because he couldn't sign the document - his Sharpie was out of ink from circling Alabama on all those National Weather Service maps....

@Serrano
Handle what? You already claimed that Dump solved this problem. According to you, this was one of Dump's accomplishments. What happened? Was it all fake news?
chisineko
Wars are won when two conditions are achieved. Remove the enemy's means to resist. And remove the enemy's desire to resist. So many years and no results like play a game of let's pretend. Good thing those that wear dresses and seat extenders on their head did not start their warfare in the 1930
Jtsnose
President should consider other than Camp David . . . closer to their turf and closer to their life style.
bass4funk
Sorry, serving is serving
Rob O’Neill took that honor, I definitely give him the credit ans honor.
wtfjapan
Too bad, would have done him some good.
Agreed , a bit of service in Vietnam, walking through the jungle dodging bullets in firefights and watching your friends die, it does a lot to a persons morality and modesty. Seems like Trump could have bettered himself because of it. Instead he hid behind daddy's money and faked it. Hence the rightly named Cadet Bonespurs
Norman Goodman
Dodging Vietnam is one of the few things I can commend Trump for doing. Please stop going down to the level of a person who thinks America had any business in Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq because if you keep doing that, no one is going to dodge the next plunder war.
bass4funk
Excellent point.
bass4funk
No, I would feel the exact same way.
That’s all that matters. Thanks O’Neill you are a true hero!
mike1492
Taliban don't want peace. Waste of time talking to them.
mmwkdw
It sounds so secret that the Taliban didn't even know of it... I'm gradually seeing Trump as an old timer, who has great ideas for the Country, and yet, has a lots of personal issues that conflict with delivery. This seemingly "madness" is not to be unexpected, as the Political system is simply a figurehead of do nothing, leaving the actual work to the "bureaucrats" in the background whom actually have the power and run the Country. The US Media should perhaps, take a close look at itself, and ask, who actually runs the Country ?
mrtinjp
History shows for than 200 years, no country can defeat the Afghan fighters. Learn from history otherwise history repeats itself.
These are not like the Afghan fighters of the past, these are a mix Pakistani army regulars and locals trained by Pakistan, as you may know the Taliban was created and is managed by the Jihadi Pakistani army.

Trump wasn't going to talk with the Taliban in the first place! Who does he think he's fooling? You cannot depend or believe anything this immature LIAR says - nothing.

Longer than Trump and longer than any US government. So how long do you want to sacrifice Western lifes for this idiotic mission impossible?
Trump should have left Afghanistan immediately, deal or no deal. But the deep state does not let him. It is sad to see his limits, and it is even sadder to see people falling for the war propaganda of the corporate media.
PTownsend
Who knows whether Trump's being dishonest once again. I don't buy Trump supporters claims his lies are typical of corrupt politicians so they must be accepted, that's just the nature of corrupt politicians, so look at jobs figures instead.
I find his dishonesty a danger to the bits of the republic remaining, those he hasn't undermined.
And who knows why he cancelled, assuming a meeting was set up. Reports are his appointed neo-cons Pompeo and Bolton can't work together. Uberhawk v. uberhawk.
That would leave Trump responsible, and if there's one thing we've seen in Trump's time in office is he'll run at taxpayer expenses to one of his golf courses whenever he has to take responsibility.
And it could be Trump didn't want to go to Camp David, he wanted to go to one of his properties on the taxpayer's dollars instead.
bass4funk
You don’t even know what his plan was. He wasn’t going to talk to them to make a nefarious deal to steal their country. Trump wants out, most Americans want out, he campaigned to bring the troops back home. Stop listening to the evil voices st CNN or the the Bill Krystol Neocons that regurgitate the stupid lie that we need to be there. A sizable small force yes, if need be to be redeployed in the event something catastrophic happens understandable, but to be there in mass numbers hasn’t helped, it’s a waste of time.
lulldapull
US failure is colossal. Anytime the US fails, or lets put it this way, every time the US fails (they never win anyway) makes Iran stronger. And at the end of the day, that is all that matters.
bass4funk
Tell that to Hitler, Saddam, Gaddafi, Noriega, Poland, France, South Korea
lulldapull
Nonsense. Iran is sovereign and will do what it wants, sell oil to whoever it wants and do business with whoever it likes to. Iran is a winner, and the US a total loser. This much we can all see.
Strangerland
The question is who will do business with them, knowing they will face US sanctions if they do so.
lulldapull
@Strangerland.......its too late........Iran won long ago........Sanctions drama is irrelevant. Countries are trading in their own currencies, bypassing the USD.
Strangerland
I fully believe Iran is being screwed by Trump and his morons.
But I can't really see that Iran has won or is winning. I think they've just been screwed.
