As usual US government can't live without WAR, self appoint global policeman.

Given that Putin and his oligarchs back Maduro and his thug regime controlling Venezuela, it will be interesting to watch how this plays out.

Will Putin and Trump decide to share Venezuela's petroleum, or will they stage another proxy war for it?

US and Russia: let Venezuelans determine their own futures. Stop interfering in sovereign nation's politics. Take care of your own problems within your borders.

Find alternatives to burning so much petroleum. Take power away from the petroleum giants.

Even Nikki Haley and Tillerson looked shocked at that part of the remark. Of course keeping all options open is not the same as threatening or even actively considering it in reality.

Meh. Venezuela is a tragedy, not a threat. Trump should get his act together and focus on NK.

I guess democratically-elected Maduro in adhering to the Venezuelan constitution was exhibiting way to much democracy for minority popular vote Trump to stomach.

You do realize that Maduro is seizing power for his own party in order to rewrite their constitution right?

...which still gives no reason for any country to intervene militarily.

As I am living in Brazil, I think I have a better notion of what's going on in the neighborhood. First, Maduro was never "elected", as someone said above. He just "inherited" Venezuela from Chaves. Second, Venezuela has long ceased to be a democracy, since opposition parties were not allowed to take part in elections or regime opponents were jailed or killed. Third, it's Maduro who has been provoked USA for ages. One of the bolivarian dictatorship foundations is that North Americans are The enemy. Devil comes second. Fourth, don't be innocent. Trump is supported by all democratic SA nations, they certainly are backing his military threat. I personally would love to ser Maduro being targeted, making Venezuela a rich and free nation again.

Like Bush jr.  has done to Iraq in 2003, Trump prepares to invade and change the regieme in Venezula like toppling Saddam Huessein! Sure this war will raise his popularity soaring among the American public

And yet, I seem to recall the shrieking of those on the right that had Hillary won she would have brought the nation to war over a no-fly zone. Here's Trump already saying he's going to strike NK, and now threatening Venezuela, and they support him (while some of the same people LITERALLY said Obama started the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and is a war monger, etc.).

Damned idiot.  There is a time and a place for everything.  And NOW is not the time for Venezuela.

Why get in the middle of Venezuela's civil war?

And yet, I seem to recall the shrieking of those on the right that had Hillary won she would have brought the nation to war over a no-fly zone.

Trump hasn't invaded any countries yet so you probably should not get your hopes up too high. Wouldn't want you to be disappointed.

The right kind of socialism versus the wrong kind of capitalism?

Bah. Venezuelans need to excrete this disgusting leftwing dictatorship themselves.

Trump's threat of military intervention in Venezuela also seems to contradict the advice of his top national security adviser. Citing the resentment stirred in Latin America by the long U.S. history of military interventions in the region,

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas called Trump's remarks "the most grave and insolent threat ever taken against the fatherland of Bolivar... called on all "good-minded" Venezuelans to unite to reject foreign intervention.

Trump really is clueless. It doesn't take a National Security Adviser input to understand this only plays into Maduro's hands.

Kim began ignoring Trump. So he found Venezuela. Which country will be Trump's Next target? Not China or Russia. Trump already finished insulting them.

Sadly, this will only play into Maduro's hands as now he can spin it domestically as an attack by America on Venezuela and those in opposition to him are American sympathizers, agents, or traitors

History is re-written and re-shaped on a daily basis now. Governments collude with pliant media and all too willing citizens in order to give credibility to their position.

I wouldn't be snobby about it and cry "sheeple" but there is something deeply disturbing about it all.

Can it get any worse, I ask myself...

Oh I agree. But let's not pull out the old "America hates democracy" card when the Maduro is totally shoring up power for himself and his supporters in order to control the entire country.

Can someone please explain why, Venezuela is a threat to the US and why such a comment is necessary from the US President ? This article clearly doesn't help with answering that question (nor do, others that have read) - so what am I missing ?
