My only guess is that he believed he would just start smashing China over the head and they would finally bow down and sign a humiliating trade deal.

I honestly think that was his strategy.

Trump tweet: Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China

Trump cannot order business companies to do anything. They're the private sector. Besides that, he's making decisions on his juvenile whims and the stock market is immediately affected negatively. Trump being the chosen one surely allows for complete stupidity and being assinine is his mentally deranged narcissism in action.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

I'm quite sure that all those companies are going to just listen to your 'order,' Donnie.

All you've got is barking, blustering, and more and more fumbling over words like a rapidly mentally deteriorating old man.

Mainly because that's all he is.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

If trade wars are so easy to win, why are we still hearing about this one?

Stable genius/master negotiator/great businessperson my aching arse.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Their tariffs hurt more than ours too. Chinese citizens simply won't buy American autos, whereas American consumers don't have much choice but to buy consumer goods made in China.

China is winning this trade war and Trump has no idea how to get out of it.

China also holds a lot of US debt - so while they want us to prosper so we can pay them back, they can also rely on a steady stream of interest we pay them.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday that he had "hereby ordered"

The executive 'ordering' anyone or any business to do anything should frighten those who support the notions of checks and balances fundamental to the republic and ensured in the US Constitution.

Only those pushing 'totalitarianism now' (US and 'foreign') would accept what diktatorwannabe Trump says.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

I honestly think that was his strategy.

I think that assuming Donny had any strategy is giving him far too much credit.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Wow. Sounds like he got up on the wrong side of the bed.

The silver lining, despite the incredible collateral damage he leaves in his wake, is that he's ensuring he'll be a one term president.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

so many orders, we Soviet now

7 ( +8 / -1 )

The trade warmonger currently occupying the White House is about the plunge world economy into a deep depression.

All of this is taking place to prove to his political base he is a tough “negotiator” and to get him reelected in November 2020.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Seems Donny got in a bit too deep on this one..

And Iran.

And North Korea.

And NAFTA.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Crazy is as Crazy does.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

There is always only one motivation for Trump: his own shameless self-promotion.

More specifically, he thinks he can win reelection by firing up his base with these idiotic tweets.

Trump neither cares nor knows anything about trade, economics, or geopolitics. He's a complete charlatan. If (when) the economy tanks, he'll blame it on somebody else and his base will go along with it, whatever the pain. They've been royally suckered, and they won't back out of the cult now.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Let's look at this "trade war" at the grass-roots level: What are Walmart customers going to buy on Black Friday? Once the established supply chain is broken, it will take years to fix.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The U.S. has more bullets than China for this trade war.

Sorry, but that sounds more like wishful thinking than a factual statement.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday that he had "hereby ordered" American companies with operations in China "to immediately start looking for" an alternative after Beijing announced a series of retaliatory tariffs.

Everyday we see the dementia getting worse - "ordering" companies in a free market economy means he's reached the tipping point - he is now clearly incapable of functioning in the office.

Is this another core Repub value that is tossed in the trash can? Balanced budgets, free trade, now small government?

Repubs need to look back at Watergate and see how the party once had the courage to stand up to a President who should no longer be in office.

But Moscow Mitch has already sold his soul to the devil - in this case a devil in the latter stages of Alzheimers....

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The U.S. has more bullets than China for this trade war.

Bullets? He said trade wars were easy to win. How many bullets do you need to win?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Amazing how all the Trump haters here have no solution to the China problem.

Pretty sure it doesn't involve bullets though.

Why is violence always the solution, with the Trumpists?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The U.S. has more bullets than China for this trade war.

Too busy using them on each other, the Americans. This is the war that Trump will lose both on the world stage and in the ballot boxes come 2020.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Having the Demented Dimwit take the fight to China guarantees China wins.

Dream on, lincolnman.

As I've said, 80% of Americans have been in a nightmare since Jan 20th 2017....

But even as Fox News shows in its polls, the nightmare will end soon...

But given his extremely unstable behavior over the past several weeks, he may not last that long...

By the way, enjoy that deep dive on the Dow today?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

”Trade wars are easy to win”

And the Trumpets are still trying to pretend like he knows what he’s talking about. As if they know what they’re talking about.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Noooo, it sounds like America is finally taking the fight to China.

It sounds like a parody of loud mouth Trumpists who are all wind and piss.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Our resident Trump haters, displaying woeful ignorance

Our ignorance pales in comparison to that of Donny and his supporters.

about what’s at stake, pathetically lash themselves into a fury virtue signaling their inchoate resentment of Donnie Darko, the Great Disrupter.

You think our resentment is incomplete? That demonstrates your intelligence nicely.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The King of Israel is now issuing decrees. He "hereby orders" yes, orders US businesses out of China.

Utterly deranged.

And the nation keeps this man in office.

Stock market just dropped 600 points

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/stock-market-news-august-23-2019-121537620.html

and on top of that

‘Gradual’ economic slowdown predicted through 2023

https://www.yahoo.com/news/gradual-economic-slowdown-predicted-2023-150751464.html

$960 Billion this year!

LOL! The business man who has 6 bankruptcies and the only American to ever lose $1 Billion dollars.

HAHA! What happened to all that "winning" we were promised?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

There are other countries that are happy and willing to step in and take China’s place.

@bass, countries don't just "step in" overnight and replace a supply chain that has been developed over the past 25 years. Chinese have been exporting everything from American flags to cowboy boots. The economics of scale there is formidable. Remember when Uniqlo began selling men's jeans from China for 900 yen a pair? As opposed to jeans sewn in Okayama that retailed for 7,000 to 10,000 yen?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

We've got plenty left for China, Toasted.

Yeeehaw!

Yes, we're going to feel some pain from this trade war. It's pay now or pay a whole lot more later. We choose now.

We choose "no". No to either of your nations. The US cannot win this trade war without massive damage to its own economy and the livelyhoods of millions.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The planet is on fire and the Trumpist way to deal with it would be to shoot the Amazon...

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The U.S. has more bullets than China for this trade war.

Then let me borrow an argument from Trumpers and other gun nuts here;

Its not the bullets or guns that matter, its the person pulling the trigger...

And in this case, we really do have someone mentally deranged with a gun...

2 ( +4 / -2 )

This is a fight that had to happen sometime, lincolnman. Unless of course you'd prefer to have China bury the U.S. economically. It's happening now. Heck, even Schumer is behind the president on this one.

Having the Demented Dimwit take the fight to China guarantees China wins... He hasn't the faintest idea what he doing - unless he's following his orders from Putin to tank the US economy...

Suck it up.

Trumps words of encouragement to farmers, steel workers, auto workers...

But he and Ivanka still get their clothes and shoe line made in China....

I guess "suck it up" applies to everyone except the Trump Crime Family...

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The economy's doing great. Beautiful. Huge. Yuuuge!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Amazing how all the Trump haters here have no solution to the China problem.

This is not a logical inference from the discussion about Donny's incompetence.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

By the way, enjoy that deep dive on the Dow today?

Newsflash for lincolnman - the stock market goes up, and the stock market goes down. It's been doing that since its inception. Look at the overall U.S. economy compared to 3 years ago. Oh my.

Newsflash to Serrano - Stock market goes up during Clinton, goes down (way down) during Bush 2, goes back up during Obama, now getting trashed by the Great Orange Dimwit....

By the way, how come you keep ignoring this one?

Suck it up.

Trumps words of encouragement to farmers, steel workers, auto workers...

But he and Ivanka still get their clothes and shoe line made in China....

I guess "suck it up" applies to everyone except the Trump Crime Family...

U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday that he had "hereby ordered" American companies with operations in China "to immediately start looking for" an alternative after Beijing announced a series of retaliatory tariffs.

Companies with operations in China - that would be;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYoOPgeTMQc

https://www.voanews.com/usa/china-grants-18-trademarks-2-months-trump-daughter-ivanka

I'll be waiting for a press release saying these companies are moving out of China....and waiting, and waiting...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Donnie has a really poor sense of what consumers want. Consumers don't want to pay more for their products; especially when it is of the low-end type. They want to pay less and earn more. So good luck finding American companies that are willing to sell their products at Chinese prices, and good luck with finding people that will work in factories at bare minimum wage.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This is now beyond ridiculous from the Street perspective. Both countries are using alternative buyers and sellers that there is clearly no impact on the ground. Clearly a manipulative move to make more money and put the poor down again. The great train robbery by the white collar criminals in Wall Street continues to manipulate and make the world poor on fake news. US gets cheap Chinese goods via 3rd party countries where it is coming in, and China is now getting its quality US product via its own channels. Either way what is tariffed or taxed on each nation is only in words.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Trump has bankrupted an airline, steak business, university, casinos, etc., as he went though his daddy's money. I guess the US is next.

He started this trade war. Let's review some things never discussed in the press.

Every product made in China and imported to the US was ordered by an American company. An American company that willingly sent jobs overseas, laid off US workers and reaped the rewards by lining the pockets of the executives. They didn't give workers raises...

China did not make these products on speculation, dropping them off at American ports and hoping people would drive up and buy them.

People try to justify Trump's insane rambling that China "ripped off" America. Huh? No one ever defines this or gives any examples. Uh, like how is China "ripping off" America? You ordered the stuff and China built it for you because Americans aren't going to work for $2 per hour in a factory making cheap plastic stuff for Walmart. Americans want cheap plastic crap.

There is no true deficit with China. Yes, there is a trade deficit of hard goods, but US companies sell services and software in China and that more than make up for the deficit of goods. China is infested with McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, Buicks, Windows, Macs and Apples...

Trump is the enemy of Americans, not China or North Korea or Iran.
0 ( +1 / -1 )

"hereby ordered" American companies with operations in China "to immediately start looking for" an alternative after Beijing announced a series of retaliatory tariffs.

More of American democracy in action. American companies and individuals ordered, told with whom they can trade. Beacon of democracy at work.

Our resident Trump haters, displaying woeful ignorance about what’s at stake, pathetically lash themselves into a fury virtue signaling their inchoate resentment of Donnie Darko, the Great Disrupter.

Well, I agree with the last five words if your statement - the rest is pure nonsense....

The only ones I see here, and really anywhere, that are "lashing themselves into a fury" are the Trumpettes....

I mean, you've had to have seen video of his crazed rallies, where his supporters shout "Lock Her Up", "Send Them Back" and "Shoot Them"...

At least one worked himself into a sufficient enough fury to do something about it in El Paso...

Anti-Trump supporter: Let's follow this Repub and call him names while he eats dinner with his family....

Going exactly to plan as I see it, a complete renegotiation of trade between China and USA, AND a new global trade alignment. Nothing new here, go and read Trump's first speech to the UN, everything else via twitter is just pandering to his base and should be ignored.

You can continue to align with China and have them slowly dismantle your democratic rights until you fit into the CCP sphere, or you accept a bit of temporary pain and keep your future freedom. Make no mistake, history has shown China has and will weaponise trade to further its political ambition.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

is there enough concern about China that we should cripple it and take away their toys? Yes, absolutely. Has been for decades. Probably not the best way to do it but at least that's happening with these actions. Even a broken cheeto filled clock is accidentally correct

He could have instead built up consensus to engage in protecting the freedoms in Hong Kong, and determining a way to disentangle manufacturing in a dictatorship but those goals get missed with tweets from the bathroom at 3am

TheLongTermer: "Most of the blind doofus followers of MSM are unaware of Far East Asian cultures. ..........those same cultures will exploit you then later laugh at you for being so naive after they own you"

As elementary as all this is, our resident doofuses simply refuse to engage with reality and have swallowed the KoolAid until it’s coming out their ears. When it comes to East Asian nations, whose disdain for the idea of a level playing field is fully embraced by the masses who have been indoctrinated since birth to accept this as a virtual Law of the Universe, nary a squeak of approbation. There’s a palpable stench of rank hypocrisy when instead of praising Trump for flattering the East Asians with his call to emulate their successful formula, our resident Amen Corner instead excoriate him for having the temerity to do what’s right for his country in calling time out on suicidal one sided openness that has enriched its trade partners and a tiny clique of free trade zealots who sponsored this national betrayal. Continue fighting the good fight, poking holes in their myriad delusions until such time as they wake up and get with the program.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yes, by the end of the week, all US firms manufacturing in China will be closed and there will be full scale production in the US; by order of POTUS. American democracy.

Trumps mental illness is accelerating daily.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@CrazyJoe

Their tariffs hurt more than ours too

That's because they want to hurt, not to reach a level playing field. Trump's plan, to dismantle the current trade pact is to reach a goal, it may or may not hurt China, but it sure will achieve its goal of fair trade in the end. You seriously can't think it can keep going on the current trajectory?

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Chinese with single minded determination have sought to exploit every opportunity offered by a naive West to transition from a maker of plastic trinklets into an economic powerhouse of cutting edge technologies

I agree. Most of the blind doofus followers of MSM are unaware of Far East Asian cultures. They take, but cannot give. You give them 5 year tax free subsidized land, and a brainwashed populace who will work for meager wages, those same cultures will exploit you then later laugh at you for being so naive after they own you

. Allot of this stuff is very basic.

Caught in a dilemma of its own making, 30 years of relentless globalization at the behest of powerful self interested cliques that saw no personal downsides to their actions and who profited enormously by consigning vast swathes of the rest of us to out of mind out of sight also ran status, the US has finally begun waking up to the immense threat posed by China. With an unerring instinct about its own priorities and how best to achieve them, the Chinese with single minded determination have sought to exploit every opportunity offered by a naive West to transition from a maker of plastic trinklets into an economic powerhouse of cutting edge technologies, all the while acutely conscious of and motivated by a burning desire to avenge historical humiliations visited upon it. Our resident Trump haters, displaying woeful ignorance about what’s at stake, pathetically lash themselves into a fury virtue signaling their inchoate resentment of Donnie Darko, the Great Disrupter. oyatoi makes a great point.

he had "hereby ordered" American companies with operations in China "to immediately start looking for" an alternative after Beijing announced a series of retaliatory tariffs.

Japanese Korean Chinese and Euro companies have gutted the mfg sector of the US. Japanese were building their plants in the US, then buying out all the supply chains and steel mills, they had every sector cornered. Chinese soon followed. Are we allowed to do the same in their country? Never seen such a thing in Japan.

Its so easy to call Donnie names when you make no effort to change what the lazy idiots in charge have allowed to happen for decades. There is going to be some suffering and change, its the only way. Or you can move to Japan, work for them, help them build their empire in the US, and teach them English so they can manage you over there. Thats what allot of English teachers are doing, Ive done it myself. You teach them English so they can go to the US and manage some Japanese project. anybody coming to Japan and learning Japanese to manage them? Never happen.
