Time to send American starship troopers on a big hunt.
JonathanJo
A pity that right now he's totally dependent on Russian launch vehicles to put his 'force' in space.
JonathanJo
If he wants to build golf courses on the moon, he'll have to make do with greys rather than greens. And on Mars, no greens at all, just a planet-sized sand-trap.
Jimizo
Plenty more large, orange bodies of gas out there.

Maybe it sounds crazy, but it's not the first time it's been brought up. Like it said in the article, our space sector is on the move, might as well start working on it from the ground up.
nostromo
better start raising taxes if you want to dominate space...oh, hang on, they were just cut weren't they?...oh well, back to the fantasy drawing board....
Bintaro
All the way to Uranus !

So what’s next? Does he plan to hold an intergalactic summit with the leaders of the universe?

Would the Space Force be armed? Are we going to have shootouts on the moon? Would NASA still exist? If so, what would be their role in relation to the Space Force?
CrazyJoe
Military exercises to keep North Korea and China in check = too expensive, and waste of money. Trump's fantasy space force riding on the backs of taxpayers with unfettered spending = no problem.

“We have the biggest space force...it’s very very bigly ...believe me... that I can tell you....ask the martians they will agree “

He really is just a surreal, deranged cult leader now.
Cue all the Trumpists now absolutely convinced of the pressing need for a space force.

Dear America,
Please make sure Trump is on one of the first Space Force flights deep into space. The thought of him being 10,000 light years away is very comforting.

I am Groo......Trump. I come in the spirit of entrepreneurship!
Sorry, poking a little fun at POTUS. Moon base. Why? Nothing on the moon. Mars seems like a better option. Especially with the new discovery of a variety of organic molecules, the carbon-based building blocks of life as we know it, Curiosity just took a look at 3.5-billion-year-old rocks it analyzed and discovered a possibility that [the organics] are from an ancient life source possibly. I would bet on some of those dried up sea beds not so deep underground you may even find fossils. I am just speculating here.
The real prize is Europa. Get there and get under the ice. There is going to be life there. (see video).

Send Trump to space and hope that the aliens will abduct him, but the ETs probably won't want him either.

As usual, Trump ignores law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty

Honestly I think that this is not the worst use of funds, maybe building a military is unnecessary but we really do need to give more funding to our space program since after the cold war the budget was heavily cut and progress has been much slower. I've heard stories that if we had kept our space program funded at the same levels then we may have lived in the future that those in the 60s had dreamed of, space colonies and travel. There's so much potential not being utilized.

what a clown. His country still doesn't have healthcare and now this. I can't even....
Also militarization of space is against international law. Trump can be tried in the Hague or maybe seize all his hotel assets.
No one can afford space on its own. It's kinda larger than even the largest ego
USA just wants to burn, let it die
ClippetyClop
Such as what? I'm interested to hear. Mining? Or just planting flags?
Kaerimashita
Send the refugees to the Moon?

Send a rocket to an asteroid and redirect it to Old Faithful geyser and set off the Yellowstone supervolcano
Shikisai
Can use it as a prequel to the Star Wars movies. "The Rise of the Empire:when the wars on Earth are not enough".
CrazyJoe
President "To Infinity and Beyond!" Trump.
I can't take it anymore

Trump is just jealous of the real billionaires like Elon Musk and Richard Branson who have their own space programs. If he was serious, he wouldn't have appointed James Bridenstine to head NASA.
Why militarize space? Isn't there enough space junk out there?
mukashiyokatta
Not to worry -- the next administration will undo this, as they undo ALL the Trump administration abominations.

zichi You forgot the Trump Space Station that is gonna make the 2001: A Space Odyssey space station look like a toy! Hee hee!
Serrano
zichi No, no, there's gonna be a mini golf course on the outer rim of the rotating Trump Space Station which, due to the rotation, will have artificial gravity!

Trump's plans for space travel could be game changer for NASA

What's wrong with U.S. wanting to dominate space, moon and Mars? Russia and China has the same ambitions.
Tell that to Russia and China. Their space programs always had military implications and they have long ignored international space treaty.
Alongside its civilian and scientific space programs, Russia and China has invested heavily in anti-satellite technologies that would destroy or disable space-based assets in the event of conflict — weapons like ground-based missiles and orbital satellites capable of destroying targets in orbit, as well as experimental lasers and signal jammers that could disable or otherwise "blind" satellites that can be used in a military conflict.
China’s rapid naval expansion is intended to expand China’s military presence in conjunction with their recent efforts to open military bases elsewhere in the world, China’s space program aims to secure a dominant position.
Whoever controls space can control the Earth. China (and Russia) has no illusions about the tactical and strategic value of space.

Outer space is too extensive for anyone to dominate.

starpunk It's just the space above the atmosphere where satellites and space stations orbit that is important to have control.
Mars and Alpha Centauri can wait for awhile.

We have the International Space Station for everyone's use now. And more nations like India, China and Japan have begun their own space exploration programs. And a few others, like NK even have spy satellites now.
By treaties signed in 1963 and since, outer space is not to militarized with orbiting weapons. It is for scientific and commercial use but not military (except espionage). Even orbital space is extremely extensive but it's not be 'controlled' by any nation, even if that were truly possible. It's like some nations have made claims for divvying up Antarctica but no one enforces it and no one recognizes these bogus claims anyway, even if there are research stations there.
