Like a mosquito bite. Scratch the itch and kill the bug. Nobody fears mosquitoes even though they’re one of the world’s biggest killers.

With winter coming, support was likely going to wane in Europe and the west. However, this unprovoked attack on civilian infrastructure has had the effect of galvanising support.
Another own goal by Putin.

Putin can not be allowed to win. The strategy for the West seems to be to make the cost for continuing this war crime too much for Russia, without escalating to WWIII. It's just too bad that innocent Ukrainians (and for that matter innocent Russians) will have to give their lives for this fantasy of Putin's.
The Avenger
Russia needs to be denazified, demilitarized and Pay a compensation after the war.
Cards fan
Huh, where have I read this before?
This is the exact same argument rightists in the west make. Telling.

Putin, bring your hordes back to Russia, stop prolonging your war. I understand that the US/UK/NATo/West have done terrible things for decades, but still cannot understand why people think the Russia/Iran/China/North Korea bloc would be any better replacing them.
Or is all the anti-west herds want is just to see their replacement. How will the Putin bloc benefit anyone other than those in the ruling castes of the Putin/Iran/China bloc. The replacements will probably pollute even more. And the bloc's various dictators must be so excited thinking their favorite pawn Trump and his corrupt sect might return to power.
Kapuna
Possible war crime?? Are they serious?? Are they that ill informed??
fallaffel
Even Russia does not know Russia's objectives in this war.

Condemnation alone just ain't enough!
Send more military hardware to Ukraine so those aggressors from Russia will finally be defeated.
Never agree to appeasement or diplomacy - Putin only understands the language of military superiority!
Besides, talking about NATO involvement in other countries: there is one minor (??) difference -
NATO never attacked a sovereign state!
Bob Fosse
“Russia’s forces are exhausted," Fleming said. “The use of prisoners as reinforcements, and now the mobilization of tens of thousands of inexperienced conscripts, speaks of a desperate situation.”
Let’s hope so. If the regular army are a bunch of rapists and murderers I don’t imagine an army of convicts will be any better.
Haaa Nemui
He said this right before speaking about awareness of the real threat the UK and other western countries face. Maybe it’ll come up in another article but this one is about Ukraine and Russia so I won’t mention it here. Hint. Starts with C, ends with a, and it’s not Canada or Cuba.

Want proof Putin surrounds himself with 'yes' people, this is it. It would have have been a walk in the park to grind Ukraine down, destablise it, slowly. Every month a column of intrusion, a bridge bombed, a road bombed, occasionally a government hq, would have been cheap....and easy, even for yes men.
Instead all Putin got is staunch, opposition, permanently ingrained into Ukraine psyche, and soon global psyche.
Xi must be slapping himself silly if he has any intelligence and can see what's ahead for Russia.

It's clear Putin has over-ruled his Generals and is making all the tactical decisions regarding conduct of his war...
How many missiles did Russia launch - 82? And all that did was kill 19 and wound 150? Terrible, but what did it do to help his war effort?
Putin has forgotten the lessons of WW II - bomb the civilian population, and their will to resist just gets stronger... The Ukrainians, on the other hand, have accurately assessed that Russia's "center of gravity" is its logistics and failure to support its forces....and is attacking those choke points...that's why they are winning...
No doubt we'll continue to see Putin lash out in frustration and humiliation at civilian targets, all the while his troops are decimated and retreat on the battlefield....
He's already lost his debacle of an invasion, it's now just a question of how many more of his troops have to confront a useless death...
Kabukilover
Putin is getting more unhinged as the war turns against him and Ukraine scores both moral and tactical victories. Thousands of young Russians are fleeing the draft. And you can be sure there is discontent at the top are well as among ordinary people. Putin was once a welcomed salesman for Starbuck and McDonalds. Few if any Russians have faith in him as a dictator.

Hopefully a failure on the Russian part, Putin's ongoing blunders, pretending h's Hitler (who at least could blame his astrologer), and especially Putin's supposed directing the war and bombings, reminds me of US President Lyndon B. Johnson increasing bombings during the US's failure in Viet Nam. But western devotees of Putin still claim he's strong, smart and savvy. But that says a lot about the geopolitical awareness of his western backers, doesn't it. They still may smirk last because he knows what Putin will try to do next, maybe he'll get free rent for life in Maga-Lago and help his host further damage the US.

The G7 can do very little whilst OPEC refuses to pump more oil and lower the price and Putin has oil freely flowing to China and India -massive importers.
Seapig
@Kapuna
I assume your problem with this statement is the use of “possible” instead of being more definitive?
Mordac
NY Times casting doubt on the effectiveness of Russian missiles because 'only' 19 people were killed. And G7 and UN condemn Russia for possible war crimes..... Couldn't make this stuff up. Open barbarism is upon us and they don't even try to disguise the fact anymore.
Rodney
According to numerous NGOs, USA/NATO has killed more than 500,000, many of them civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Libya to name a few in recent decades. Russia is way behind. Even France has killed more.
Rodney
there is a possibility that civilians and civilian building were hit by fragments of Russian missiles shot down by western air defense systems. Only a possibility, but we will never know, because Zelensky has banned all media in Ukraine that he doesn’t control.
Mordac
He's also banned Ukrainians from uploading footage of the strikes. Because of the lack of civilians being killed doesn't make for 'good optics' for Western audiences.
Rodney
please tell that to Libyans, Afghans, Iraqis, Yugoslavians, Serbians, and other sovereign states.
Rodney
@Mordac. You forgot the ban on political parties and up to 15 years in prison for having Pro-Russian alleged feelings.
UChosePoorly
Rodney and Mordac - I assume you guys have access to the same first-person reporting platforms that all the rest of us do (twitter, telegram, TikTok, YT, etc.). If so, then you know that there is plenty of footage of the strikes and their aftermath. If not, then maybe you guys should expand your horizons a bit?
Haaa Nemui
Yep. All it’s done is make those nations hate America. Russia and its supporters expecting different is moronic.
Haaa Nemui
All these comments supporting Russia because “America did it too”.
UChosePoorly
Eastman - I am sorry for your loss. I understand your anger and suspicion of the US. Why do you think the Ukrainians who have been affected by the Russian invasion and bombardment will feel any differently toward Russia? Are Serbs that different from Ukrainians?
stormcrow
Possible war crime?!
Every time a Ukrainian dies from a Russian bullet or bomb or torture at Russian hands, it’s a war crime.
Blacklabel
thats not enough?
kinda makes it look like they werent really trying to hurt anyone doesnt it?
That missile that landed 1000 yards away from Zelensky office?
was that intentional or are they so incompetent that you think they missed?
wallace
Russia is running out of ammo and its troops are exhausted. Putin trying to mobilize Russian prisoners.
Haaa Nemui
What do you expect Ukraine to do? Nothing? Russia invaded and you expect Ukraine not to react? Yes Russia will continue to react as well. I know this. But it’s Russia in a foreign land killing and terrorizing, not Ukraine, and it was never a Russian problem to solve, even right back to 2014. So yes, I’ll continue to oppose American invasions like I was opposed to Afghanistan and Iraq, but right now it’s Russia that is in the wrong.
Raw Beer
Or perhaps some people realize that the US has done everything in their power to poke the bear.
Putin has been very patient and has given plenty of warnings. He could have followed the US example and given Ukraine their own "Shock and Awe" months ago, but he chose a measured approach, while aiming for diplomacy.
The sooner the Ukrainian people get rid of Zelensky, the sooner things will go back to something approaching normalcy.
wallace
Ukraine is trying to defend itself against the invasion by an aggressive nuclear nation.
Haaa Nemui
February 23rd Putin was not planning an invasion. Diplomacy with a liar is foolish.
ok1517
Eastman,
wrong, once again!
"Just one question at the end-why no one ever trying to talk about** peaceful solution for all of this mess caused?no NATO,no EU,no Japan even...all just talking about how to "support" UA with sending of money and weapons-just prolonging conflicts UA have zero chance to win?"**
Everyone ist talking about negotiations, diplomatic efforts, and so on. But preconditions are set: Russian troops must retreat from all Ukrainian territory, also the occupied areas, reparations must be paid, those responsible for all the attrocities must be sent to an international court, and so on. Putin & associates, however, will never agree to this! So, who is to blame?
Oh and by the way, Ukraine is doing just fine kicking those invaders' arses wit the support from may countries pouring in!
Raw Beer
Yes, that is the narrative that must be provided in order to maintain the funds/supplies from the west and willingness of the Ukrainian people to risk their lives.
Mr Kipling
What would the G7 think if the Russians put a bomb on an unsuspecting tanker drivers rig then evaporated him and three other civilians on a civilian bridge?
My guess is they would call it terrorism. That is what they call it in the middle east. But OK is Ukraine does it?
Haaa Nemui
It doesn’t just somehow begin at the Minsk agreements and it took both sides to screw that up.
Haaa Nemui
I’m sorry but I have to work so I can’t respond quickly now.
2020hindsights
Mr Kipling
It's not a 'civilian bridge'. It's a bridge. All bridges have potential military strategic value. And you know what bridges have had more damage done to them than the Kerch Bridge? The Antonivka Road Bridge, which is in Kherson, Ukraine.
And I'm pretty sure we don't know how the attack was carried out, so best not to speculate.
RichardPearce
Hmm, any of those G7 leaders not also credibly accused of war crimes or complicity of war crimes themselves?
PS, ALL the leaders mentioned in the story are also vulnerable to Crime Against Humanity charges under the ISTPCA.
Bob Fosse
Predictably those supporting putin want to talk about every other country instead and things that happened years ago instead of what happened this week.
Cards fan
And there were only 3 people killed in the attack that supposedly prompted this temper tantrum. Considering that attack was carried out early morning, it looks like they weren't really trying to hurt anyone, doesn't it?
And here's a clue, lobbing missiles into a crowded city at rush hour was designed to kill and cause terror.
ClippetyClop
Delusional nonsense. They really aren’t.
If you’re gonna try and Whaddabout yourself into believing that then you need to do much better.
fallaffel
These attacks on civilian infrastructure make no tactical sense. Apparently they are using up Belarus's stocks for them. All to keep people from making fun of Putin's bridge.
Peter14
This whole invasion is a war crime. Add to that torture, murder, extra judicial executions, targeting civilians including children and pregnant women and you have a list of Russian war crimes it will take more than a decade to go through let alone try them all. Some of the guilty are already dead, but many are not. The buck stops with Putin, who is as responsible for this invasion and it's crimes as Hitler was for WWII in Europe and his extended battlefields.
starpunk
Ain't no 'possible' about it. The Geneva Convention and the UN Charter condemns all these acts. The invasion is unprovoked and it's a WAR even though it was never declared. He can call it a 'police action' or whatever he likes but it is a WAR and Russia is committing war crimes, and that includes the cyberwar hackings.
The Avenger
Putin is runaway evil and all he offers everyone, including his own citizens, is death. He has NOTHING else to offer. Look at his best and brightest trying to leave like rats from a sinking, morally bankrupt state.
TokyoLiving
Keep making skits instead of promoting serious negotiations to end this war, Russia is not going to stop..
Olegek
By the way - one third of Ukrainian power capacities are damaged - in two days guys...
Olegek
Very interesting point of view. I'm from Russia by the way...
