That's...actually a much lower casualty count than I expected to see.

Any loss of life is bad, the only truly acceptable number is 0, but with over 14,000 dead in that region since 2014, it seems tiny.

I can only hope that the one lasting good effect is the end of any further loss of life in the region, but maybe that is too much to hope for.

We can only hope this doesn't escalate further by actions from Russia or from NATO forces. If every party acts as they have said they would, that shouldn't happen, but I don't think we have any reason to take anyone at face value right now.

If Putin really wanted to invade Ukraine, why now when all these past years they have supported DONBASS territories.

Putin doesn't want to conquer Ukraine. it is not about expanding Russian territory. instead, it is about keeping NATO influence away from the Russian border. he wants a buffer state. this, in his mind, is a critical national security issue.

he would back off in exchange for a formal declaration by NATO that they would never allow Ukraine to join. but NATO cant give him that. so his options are to either install a Ukrainian government that has no desire to join NATO, or failing that, carve out a part of Ukraine and keep it firmly under Russian control.

It seems too late to discuss now and here, but I wonder why Ukraininan President Zelensky had insisted on access to NATO although the latter seemed hasitant (and now almost abondaning military support to Kyiv). A similar strategic mishap was made by Georgia in 2008, which resulted in a Russian invasion and two breakaway pro-Russian regions (unilaterally) claiming independent republics.

I believe that an alternative course could have been possible to avoid or minimize armed conflicts now underway. For example, Finland, sharing long borders with Russia, is not a NATO member. With about 5 million plus residents, one eighths the population size of Ukrain, the Finnish military capability is also small and limited in compared to its eastern neighbor (even though considering that it still adopts dafting system for all males).

During the Cold War, Finland's pro-Soviet and compromised foreign policy was teased as Finlandization; in fact Finalnd had been successful in stahying on the side of the West under decades-old tough times, without losing its liberal democratic principles. Why couldn't Ukrain take this model, just for a few more years? President Zelensky had'nt even had a stong political base at home. For me it looks like many things having been terribly uprepared or immature on the Ukrainian side prior to NATO/EU membership although I definitely oppose the current invasion.
