The US continues its descent. Crises of leadership. At all levels. Especially the top. Aided by 'religious' leaders and their devout followers. Aided by social media campaigns from organizations like the Republican rapid response team pushing skewed statistics and saying it's those at the lower ends of the economic spectrum hit hardest, so no problem. And saying anyway, it's their fault for being poor. Aided by 'foreign' social media posters echoing the Republican's messages, and like the Republicans hoping to further undermine US systems.

AKA mostly made up of Republicans and Republican supporters!

because mask-wearing has become political, a statewide mandate could actually discourage people from covering their faces.

It is quite surreal really. There was no need for it to become political. In no other country is it a political issue.

And it is the fault of one man who made it a political issue.

Liberals are trying to bring the USA to its knees. They have had some remarkable successes.

Trump fans don't want to wear masks but want the economy to open up again.

How funny.

Where did we in the US get all these nut-job pro-Trump Karens and Kens who think wearing a mask is an infringement of their freedom but buckle up every time they get into their cars....

They are absolute nuts - beyond crazy - imbeciles...

And the Red State Governors who put their own political ambitions above the lives of their citizens are just as culpable...

If you don't want to wear a mask, just STAY HOME. That's what I do.

I think the USA will likely be among the last countries to clear out their coronavirus problem. The majority of the citizens of the world will vaccinate enough to create herd immunity. The citizens of some countries will refuse, causing it to take longer for the virus to be stifled.

This opens up the question of how the rest of the world will treat citizens of those countries if that happens. Will covid vaccinations be required as a prerequisite for entry into their own countries? And how will the covid countries fare economically, while the rest of the world moves on without the distraction? I don't expect it will be good for their economies.

An easy Google search for pictures and videos of "protests" and you will see tons and tons and tons of people not wearing masks while marching shoulder to shoulder. Why? Please reply instead of downvoting and ignoring like you tend to do.

@ nomination

I guess what you are trying to say is a majority of Americans are fools.

You might want to go back and check and see that I ask the question first, you ignore it - then ask yours...

Which is the same as you're doing now...

So why are all the pro-Trump Karens and Kens refusing to wear a mask? Pence, McConnell, Brix, The Surgeon General, even Trump has changed his mind and now says he wears a mask....

So why all the drama, insults, and spitting?

Well, for one wearing a mask when you are outside is pretty much a wasted effort. Unless you are planning to share the same air with someone for 20 minutes or so. Otherwise, it doesn't do much for you. It is hilarious seeing people jogging or bike riding wearing masks.

Inside, in a crowded sweaty venue, I can see the sense of it. But it isn't for the government to decide for you. Risk management is a personal decision. If a private business wants customers to wear masks then they are free to make such a rule and people should respect it. Otherwise, just leave people be. If the virus is so contagious and deadly, why has it infected less than 2% of the population?

If you don't want to encounter someone who isn't wearing a mask, just stay home.

Well, I recall the resistance to seat belts and the intense fight over indoor-smoking. People need time to adjust -- but there isn't time.

It's unfortunate that a lack of math and science education is partly responsible for those who might be happy to adjust their behavior for everyone's safety, but they just don't know enough to realize the magnitude of the threat.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." Isaac Asimov, Column in Newsweek (21 January 1980)

But it isn't for the government to decide for you. Risk management is a personal decision.

Managing risk to YOURSELF I can accept as a personal decision of yours. But that isn't what this is about. Refusing to wear a mask in the presence of others is a "personal decision" you are making to put other people at risk.

Now in Japan they don't need the government to make this decision for people because everybody has been pretty grown up about it and wears a mask anyway. Great. I'm glad I live here.

In other countries plagued by infantile selfishness and belief in conspiracy theories which result in half the population stubbornly refusing to do the responsible thing on their own? Well, if they want the epidemic to be brought under control without more draconian lockdowns their governments better start acting.

If you don't want to encounter someone who isn't wearing a mask, just stay home.

Oh OK, so just keep everyone locked down in their homes while the economy grinds to a halt so the idiots won't be inconvenienced by the need to wear a mask? Great idea.

All those folks who became infected by sitting side-by-side with other Trump supporters at his many indoors and outdoors rallies agree with you - those that are still here in the ICU and not dead...

Dang straight - what's the government going to do if I don't wear my seat belt - give me a a ticket or something? That won't ever happen. I sure wish they'd give them astronauts some freedom rather than forcing them to wear those bulky space suits...

If you don't want to encounter someone who isn't wearing a mask, just stay home.

Great idea - I encourage all Trump supporters to stay home - until at least Nov 4th...
