@Strangerland

Number two could be interpreted as using power to oppress, but neither number one nor three requires power.

Silvafan is right! In fact all three of your definitions fits into his description on racism earlier. You created your own rebuttal.

@Strangerland

Number two could be interpreted as using power to oppress, but neither number one nor three requires power.

You just made my point for me. Thank you!

the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others

Power!

a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination

Power!

hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

That is prejudice which is also a part of racism. Without prejudice, there would be no product "privilege".

unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group.

Racism:

a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

No. Denying equal rights is an action that people justify through racism. It is not the racism itself. Power is not a requirement of racism.

This is your strawman argument because I didn't say having power or using your power to deny others power too is racism. No where in my posts is that claim.

Power is one necessary component of racism because you deny others that same access based on race to maintain that power and privilege.

You understand what the word "component" means?

No. Denying equal rights is an action that people justify through racism. It is not the racism itself. Power is not a requirement of racism.

Other than saying "no", would you care to elaborate? I have not read any reason not to believe that power is not a necessary part of racism.

Can’t white supremacis take their protest out of the public eye, too?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Why do all of these 'freedom of speech" rallies on the right focus on racists? And why is promoting racism as freedom of speech OK but football players taking a knee need to be thrown out of the country?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

It's because they are cowards.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

We sent those Trump supporting white nationalists home with their tail between their legs.

@bass4funk

reverse-racism

First, reverse-racism doesn't exist. It is an excuse to justify their racist behavior. (Projection and Moral Blindness)

a)Racism needs privilege and power. called In order to be racist, you need to possess two traits. The first is privilege: A structural, institutional, and social advantage. In the US, white people occupy positions of racial privilege, even when they are disadvantaged in other ways. White women, for example, consistently make more than black women, because they benefit from racial attitudes. Furthermore, you also have to have power: the ability, backed up by society, to be a strong social influencer, with greater leeway when it comes to what you do, where, and how. For instance, white people benefit from privilege and power when they aren’t arrested for drug crimes at disproportionate rates, while black people experience racism when they’re arrested, and sentenced, for the same crimes(ie Charisma Man).

b) Attempts to rectify systemic injustices are not examples of reverse racism. People who are use to getting preferential treatment whether they know it or not for their race believe the playing field is unfair once the playing field is leveled because they lost their advantage(mythical reverse-racism). Nope just equality!

c) White people are not oppressed in the US. Simple fact! Today, people are still living with the legacies of colonialism: In the United States, the black community is dealing with the aftermath of slavery and the poverty and systemic prejudice it left behind.

d)Prejudice and racism are not the same thing. Some people of color may view whites prejudicially; no wonder, given the interactions of racism in society. Prejudice and racism are different. A joke about white people dancing has no impact on the lives of average white people, whereas jokes about black people and reinforcing stereotypes about black people do have an impact on the lives of everyday black people.

@strangerland

The right seem to be throwing out 'reverse-racism' as some sort of argument as to how they are not racist, which is a ridiculous stance, because there is no reverse racism, there is just racism - even when it's against white people.

Power is one necessary component of racism because you deny others that same access based on race to maintain that power and privilege. Without it then we would be discussing prejudice like I mentioned above. It is definitely possible to be racist and not be white, but the power and privilege must be present. There is racism in Japan. There is racism in South Africa, but the discussion is the US.

The problem like I discussed last night is one side is using it too broadly because people don't know the differences, and the majority using a certain way doesn't mean that it is correct. The other side is using as a way to be morally blind to reality.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

a)Which doesn't exist because "Racism = privilege + power". How can people with neither practice racism against whites in the US?

Sorry, but I can't agree with this. This is a recent thing, trying to re-define racism as requiring power. People can be racist against their own race, or a majority race, and both happen lots.

The right seem to be throwing out 'reverse-racism' as some sort of argument as to how they are not racist, which is a ridiculous stance, because there is no reverse racism, there is just racism - even when it's against white people.

Racism on any level is wrong

Trump demonstrates it to the highest with his hatred for Mexicans (the wall) and Muslims (the ban). Also, Trump says the N-word.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Logic goes out the window when it comes to racism and other forms of bigotry and abuse.

Clayton Bigsby skit from the Dave Chappelle show is the poster child for racists in the US when we consider how stupid the character really is. Clayton Bigsby is blind, and he doesn’t realize that he himself is Black. The members of the supremacist movement don't tell him because he is valuable to their movement as a speaker. When he speaks at the rally, they all cheer and support him until he removes his hood and heads start to explode. He is married to a blind white woman and when he finds out that he is black, he’s disgusted with her for marrying a black man, so he divorces her. If you can’t see that someone is a different color then you wouldn’t even know that there was a difference between you and them.

It’s how a lifelong racist like Obama could have a white man as his vice president.

A better question!

Why do you think white racists in public and media like FOX love to draw analogies between "white victimhood" and the Holocaust and slavery to justify all of their actions?(ex. Alex Jones, Rally goers on the right, etc....)

2 ( +2 / -0 )

deal with the racism that so many of them support.

The democrats don't support the Muslim ban or didn't call blacks the N-word like Trump.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Looking at the photo, seems the media coverage is causing the issues.

After two hours and a few speeches, the "Unite the Right 2" rally ended early when it began to rain and two police vans took the demonstrators back to Virginia.

I love this. They got their free speech and were escorted away. 1st Amendment rights exercised. I hope the bill for the police van use is at least $2000. Freedom of speech doesn't mean free ride.

And in REAL news today, a march of revolutionary, Un-American Socialist Lefties was swamped by a counter protest of patriotic, peaceable, moderate Americans.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Jimizo

To be fair, the decent people on the right didn’t do this and called it nonsense.

It was the trash who dived into birtherism and the like.

I hope that was sarcasm. Trump's voice screamed the loudest!

Best thing to do is ignore them, why do 20 people get all this attention?

Last year UniteTheRight fascists felt emboldened enough to commit a terror attack on an innocent counter-protester. After all that negative press came a name-and-shame campaign to make identify participants and make sure their employers knew what they were doing. One year later, and most of them are too scared to show up to round two.

I think that tells us that ignoring them is exactly the wrong way to respond to these hate groups. They thrive on being able to menace innocent people and then slink away without consequence. Shine a spotlight on them, and they scatter like cockroaches.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Nonsense. No racist would ever allow someone like Omarosa live in the White House or allow someone like Ben Carson to be secretary of HUD and allow his daughter to marry a Jew, it just wouldn't happen, impossible. Either you're a racist or not

As has been pointed out dozens of times, racists don't operate in a logical world. Just like the way men who claim they love and respect women, while at the same time sexually assaulting them.

The horror writer, HP Lovecraft was a rabid racist and anti-semite, yet he was married to a Jewish woman. Logic goes out the window when it comes to racism and other forms of bigotry and abuse.

Seems that some on this site are intent on equating racist groups with those that counter them by minimizing the threat of the former while maximizing that of the latter. One might wonder from where such instigation arises (highest office in the land?).

This entirely misses the point. Aside from the fact that any attempt at moral equation between the two groups is reprehensible, members of racist groups foolish enough to appear at rallies are small in number precisely as they risk both physical harm at the moment and future repercussions such as loss of employment, but they represent a continuing current in American opinion.

They must be eliminated root and branch, and those who attempt to equate their counterparts as equals must be exposed as belonging to the former. And this includes Trump, with his hideously equivocal statement.

I'm sorry, but the KKK and other groups like the Aryan Nations are loud and in your face, but a threat, not even close. They get their small groups and stand on their pedestal and blare out nonsense, the media will blow it out of proportion and that's it, they all go home and the media makes it as these loons are taking over.

Well, thanks for that Bass – I’m sure all my African-American friends will sleep well tonight knowing that you have declared all of them safe from the KKK and the jack-booted Aryan Nation thugs – don’t worry about those burning crosses and nooses hung on your mailboxes – it’s all for show…

Now compare that the Antifa that link themselves to the left and especially left socialists.

All this poster can do is “what about”….and I didn’t know you had such high regard for Antifa, they seem to inspire such fear in you….

Groups like these have been around for a very long time if you do a comparative number of White Nationalists (proclaimed) and Antifa you will see the Antifa will outnumber the Nationalists worldwide or even the US 3 to one.

Your so-called comparative study is Fake News (actually beyond Fake News). The KKK and White Supremacists were around for a long time and decreasing until Trump “let them out of their box” with his hate filled rhetoric…they’re now flourishing…

But then the violence that usually almost all the time that happens are perpetrated by the so called Neo Nazi haters. Smashing windows, smashing public and private property, using sticks and pipes on people, vandalizing, wearing masks, instigating fights, attacking anyone that disagrees with their fascist policies like the cowards they are.

I see you have a reading and a memory problem – Trump calls 3 prominent black people “low intelligence” and this poster makes some absurd assertion that counter protestors are more violent than the Neo Nazis and White Supremacists. Stick to the subject - Trump used KKK rhetoric in describing three prominent African Americans, to appease his racist, white supremacy supporters.  And by the way, I guess that white supremacist on trial for murder that mowed down a young women with his car in Charlottesville last year wasn’t violent at all.

Welcome to the QAnon alternate reality…

3 ( +4 / -1 )

A bunch of selfish, over privileged crybabies, these sad excuses for citizens can slink back to their hidey-holes after their two minutes of television coverage.

If you have to hold rallies to keep demonstrating that you are racially superior, you aren't. You are suffering from a massive inferiority complex, and have to belittle other races, just to fool yourself.

You are the moronic dregs of our race, and we are ashamed of you.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

There is Zero proof he used the word. See, this is what gets me and drives me crazy about the left, they hear something negative about the President and without a shred of evidence peddle it as fact without any evidence whatsoever.

Interesting, I didn't know it worked that way.

Maybe it changed after Trump told his followers to check out a non-existent sex tape in a particularly rancid trash war with a beauty queen on Twitter.

Zero evidence doesn’t bother him. What’s good for the goose...

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Nonsense. No racist would ever allow someone like Omarosa live in the White House or allow someone like Ben Carson to be secretary of HUD and allow his daughter to marry a Jew, it just wouldn't happen, impossible. Either you're a racist or not, you don't get to waffle and wear a sheet on Monday and on Tuesday wear a "we are the world" T-shirt.

So him using the N word and other racial epithets doesn't make him a racist because his son in law is Jewish and a member of his cabinet is black?

Interesting, I didn't know it worked that way.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Best thing to do is ignore them, why do 20 people get all this attention?

Maybe because last year the president said there were good people among them?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The left are so violent and destructive.

-10 ( +2 / -12 )

There's little debate as to which side of the issue 45 comes down on. His father was a white supremacist, and he's always been a racist.

Oh, but the left try so, so very hard.

Isn't it interesting to see Trump supporters try to diminish the threat posed by Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist groups, to include the KKK

I'm sorry, but the KKK and other groups like the Aryan Nations are loud and in your face, but a threat, not even close. They get their small groups and stand on their pedestal and blare out nonsense, the media will blow it out of proportion and that's it, they all go home and the media makes it as these loons are taking over.

and how aligned these groups are with the Republican party and Trump? It would help more if they knew their facts.

Now compare that the Antifa that link themselves to the left and especially left socialists.

As of 2017, the KKK is registered in 22 states, and the Southern Poverty Law Center assesses White Supremacy groups have grown significantly since the election of Donald Trump - 49 officially recognized with names like "White America Inc", "Friends of New Germany", and "Nationalist Front."

Groups like these have been around for a very long time if you do a comparative number of White Nationalists (proclaimed) and Antifa you will see the Antifa will outnumber the Nationalists worldwide or even the US 3 to one.

That's hardly surprising given the level of race-baiting and dog whistles this President engages in. Lebron James, Don Lemon and Maxine Waters all have "low intelligence"... Words right out of the KKK manifesto.

But then the violence that usually almost all the time that happens are perpetrated by the so called Neo Nazi haters. the media and Dems and left are trying to turn the conversation in social issues, when people who actually vote care about jobs, unemployment, stocks and deportation of illegal aliens. All of which are historically good.

Trending in that direction since 2009!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Why were there only 20 people? Because that’s an accurate representation of how few actual Nazi racists there are. Despite liberals wanting us to think there are millions.

Despite what the media is trying to push everyone to think, these idiots are small in numbers, but the left has to inflate them to appear menacing. You have more racists on CNN than out in those streets.

As far as the article saying this event sputtered is  misleading. Once the organizer for the so called alt-right group heard about the other groups they told their supporters to not show up. They did this to avoid another conflict..

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

This entire event is a setup by the city to spark violence. The group had a permit to protest, but so did other groups at the same time. The city should be held responsible for creating a very unsafe situation for many local residents...

I'm surprised our Commander in Chief Race Baiter is not out there marching with the White Supremacists, Nazis, and the KKK - I mean he does think "some of them are very fine people...."

8 ( +12 / -4 )

The Unite the Right crowd has really decreased in size this year because they don't won't to be exposed as racists. They want to keep it secret, so they use it on a regular basis in employment, education, and housing.

That BS argument that tribalism and racism are the same yesterday on JT didn't work in last year's rally, and it wouldn't work in this one because the actions last year between the two sides were greatly different fueled by an incompetent president.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

BB, that is one argument, but its counterpart is demonstrated by the vastly shrunk numbers this year compared with last year - jail time tends to focus the minds of those involved. It may have been overblown, but better that than an invisible, insidious creep. (I went to counter a KKK rally back in my college days in Maine, of all places. These people are like cockroaches - they never entirely vanish and may multiply.)
