Whatever the standpoints, Trump seems unable to budge over having his ties overly long, but Trudeau does have more interesting socks.
David Varnes
Those are some pretty sweet socks.
Dango bong
I agree. Canada is refusing to look at the facts. Why do you tariff US dairy goods 280% and get to export for free? Address this first then we can have a dialog.
SuperLib
So the negotiations aren't going well.
Dango bong
There is no negotiation. Canada has to do what the US wants or lose the cash cow. Either reduce tariffs on our good or pay them to export.
Finally a President who looks out for US interests.
Dango bong
No. It will be level soon no matter what Canada wants
That was not his aim, fair and equal trade is his aim and if others want to equate fairness with some sort of discord that is their right to do so
elephant200
Back stabber is quote from "Mein Kamp" !? That fits uncle Trump taste!
Dango bong
I love how these countries get so up in arms about Trump wanting equality. Its like robbing a bank for years and finally the bank says "hey you can't rob us anymore" and getting mad at the bank. Completely silly
CrazyJoe
Perhaps if President Trump had had the courtesy to attend the entire set of meetings and to sign the joint communique, he would not have left himself open to criticism. Prime Minister Trudeau is in the right here, and the world knows it. Only Trump is discomfited, embarrassed and seething. What did he expect? When you treat your allies poorly, your enemies take note.

Comedy gold.
There was a massive oversupply of milk in North America a while back. The Canadian govt cut production and slapped a 270% tarriff on imports to protect their dairy farmers. The Americans, having lost their Russian market in 2014, and facing reduced demand from China, did nothing. American dairy farmers get massive subsidies and produce low quality milk. American cows are fed recombinant bovine somatotropin, a growth hormone illegal in Canada.
I'd be interested to know why the Americans feel they don't have to manage their dairy industry in any way and also have the right to force Canada to accept massively subsidised milk produced by sick cows?
cleo
Oxymoronic statement. 'Level' surely implies it's what both sides want? Imposing conditions on one side by sheer brute force is bullying, not negotiation.
Anything that keeps unregulated, over-produced, hormone-laced 'food' out of countries that actually have a food culture is surely a good thing.
If America wants a level playing field, maybe they should start by using the same ball and playing the same game as other players: ditch the cheaper-is-better-regardless-of-quality attitude to food, and abolish the tariff rate quotas that essentially keep imports of dairy into the US at not very much more than zero. Trump doesn't talk about those things, of course.
He probably doesn't even know about them.

It's looking more and more like he's intending to ditch his traditional allies, and move into an alliance with China, Russia, Iran and with these discussions in Singapore, may be North Korea.

They're turning it into a religious war now. Easier to sell to the rabid christians. They may agree with the premise of a trade war, but if God is on their side, and only their side, they can ignore the right or wrong of the situation, and feel confident that they know which side to support.
serendipitous1
Main problem for the US is most of their products (especially food and cars) are crap and consumers outside the US know this. No wonder there are trade deficits.
TrevorPeace
@DangoBong, dairy has nothing to do with it. This is showmanship. Trump's his own show. Trudeau's his father', brother's, dead brother's, and mother's. Not necessarily in that order. He could be my son. And, by the way, his father and I corresponded.
'Just watch me' was also the opinion of a Canadian Prime Minister far before Justin Trudeau's father coined the phrase.

It's crazy that the US is directly insulting the leader of the country with which they share the longest border in the world. It's not like they can move to get away from the neighbors.
And Canadians are a proud people. I could see this souring relations between the countries for years. Trump already destroyed relations with the Mexicans previous to this.
America first, America alone.
Strangerland
Canada also had proper regulation and restrictions on their banks, which is why their economy didn't crash, and was one of the best performing in the world after the 2008 crash.
Now Canada needs to protect themselves from the shock of the next America crash. Trump's recent actions have just shown that they cannot Trust America, now nor until/if they ever fix their electoral system to ensure that they aren't electing leaders who will insult them, while claiming to be a victim when it's clearly not the case.
Good luck Canada. You're literally stuck with them. Insulate yourselves from this bullsh1t.
bass4funk
But it’s ok to insult the President or the US? Wait a minute......
No, but that doesn’t mean that our neighbor has the right to take advantage of us either. Wait was that about respect......
As are Americans.
Relations with Mexico was never good, except for Washington and the Mexican swamp elites
Exactly!

I would like to apologize to all Canadians on behalf of the US – as you may have seen, while Trump won the Electoral College, a majority of Americans voted for his opponent. Ever since the election, he has continually embarrassed our country by lying (every time he opens his mouth), cavorting with porn stars, fawning over his mentor Vlad the Great, spinning far-fetched conspiracy theories, pulling children away from their parents at the border, and screwing the very people that elected him by gutting Obamacare and giving billions in tax breaks to huge corporations.
The broad majority of US citizens value our very close relationship with Canada – and if Trump would ever spend a weekend at the border instead of Mara Lago he’d see the huge number of raw products and finished goods that go back and forth in both directions. Canada’s military works side-by-side with us in NORAD and has done so for 50 years. The US couldn’t have a better neighbor, Canada is filled with friendly people and blessed with natural beauty.
Russia attacks our democracy, uses chemical agents to assassinate dissidents, props up a dictator that gasses children, invades its neighbors, and Trump wants to invite him back into the G7. I guess I missed Nova Scotia invading Maine….
It’s clear that Putin has way more on him than just a pee tape….fortunately Bob Mueller will enlighten us all (especially Trump supports) soon.

Hey America is literally a free market.
Others have tariffs. Now you have a president who doesn’t believe in this version of free trade, wants cash flow, but a new kind and into other people’s hands.
Strangerland
When did Trudeau insult Trump and/or the US?
fxgai
This should be the G7 position.
Free trade right?
JeffLee
Because it's not a trade problem. Canada imports five times as much value in diary products from the US than other way round, meaning the US enjoys a large surplus in this area.
In fact, overall, the US runs a goods and services SURPLUS with Canada, clear proof that Canada is very open to US products.
Trump's motive for bringing up tariffs with China, Japan and others was over unbalanced trade, which doesn't exist with Canada. This spat is really about Trump's fragile ego, insecurity and incompetant diplomacy, not about trade.
rainyday
Funny, Trump unilaterally and arbitrarily slaps tariffs on Canada, but somehow Canada is the back stabber now? Orwellian.
On on the plus side for Trudeau, standing up to Trump is an approval ratings goldmine among Canadians. This probably applies to every other country too.

That's so Canadian!
Anyways, we look at presidents who have insulted their northern neighbor. Trump is in good company with Nixon there. Weird though, I see literally not a single commonality between them other than this.
lostrune2
Now who's being dishonest? Face it guy, stop lying to yourself - they don't like you. You think it's a 10, but they think you're a 2
So if the other countries will do what it takes to protect their countries, why is Trump saying:
"Before leaving for Singapore, Trump had delivered a stark warning to America's trading partners not to counter his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports."
What does he think? That the other countries wouldn't do the same thing he's doing?
Also, if Trump doesn't want trade barriers, why is he putting trade barriers against NAFTA, e.g. trying to keep out Mexico/Canada-manufactured US brand cars going into the US by putting a tariff on them? (If Ford creates a factory in Mexico, he would put tariffs on those cars just because Ford decided to manufacture in Mexico instead of in the US)
NAFTA reduced barriers; and yet Trump is against it while saying he's against barriers. He's trying to talk on both sides of his mouth
Kniknaknokkaer
Trump seems to have this theory that the other world leaders are his employees. He's on course for a lot of egg on his face.

The G7 meeting became irrelevant the moment AF1 touched down in Singapore. Watch for leftists to exhibit their daily dose of foot stomping outrage at the media cabal for deciding to report on the run up to the Summit of the Century between President Trump and the NOKOs instead of the G7 ice fishing excursion scheduled for today in Canada.
Laguna
...or you can look at the stats on dairy tariffs. I do have a bit of sympathy on tariffs of these types due to rapid price fluctuations and the high costs of maintaining production. However, Trump either hasn’t the slightest clue that the US restricts dairy imports far more than Canada does, is lying, or is trolling. With this president, any or all of the three are equally possible.
onewrldoneppl
apparently, this navarro fellow has white house security clearance. judging by the way he speaks to the media, suggestive of his mental state, perhaps he shouldn't have such access.

While America stumbles around, Canada and the EU have to keep up the good work and keep the moral torch burning. In two and a half years, Trump will be voted out of office. Many, if not most, Americans dislike Trump as much as you do, so hang tough.

Could you link to perhaps two or three occasions when Trudeau snubbed Trump?

Trudeau was correct in his assessment of Trump's childish bullying. To spin it that somehow, Trudeau is a back-stabber and somehow putting the Singapore summit in jeopardy is hilarious and typical of the increasingly isolated Trump regime.
Leaving isolation hopefully behind is the DPRK which, thanks to Chinese efforts, looks set to set down along the path to denuclearisation. It won't be easy but it will be fascinating.
Meanwhile, the SCO summit (whether you like the members or not) shows co-operation and maturity (again, whether you like their aims or not).
The world is changing, and the petulant brat is making more and more enemies. Interesting times.

Fake news.

Canada is refusing to look at the facts. Why do you tariff US dairy goods 280% and get to export for free? Address this first then we can have a dialog. well Id say its because America subsidies its dairy industry to the tune of $22billion annually , which is about 73% of US dairy farmers income, making US dairy exports prices artificially low, why wouldnt Canada want to protect its industry against that, it most certainly isnt free or fair trade , America is refusing to look at ALL the facts! Address that then Ill guess Canada will continue dialog.

One almost expects the ghost of Marie Antoinette to make an appearance.
This is why Trump and indeed the G7 crowd are ultimately irrelevant. Not because Trump thinks so but because they are all self-serving. They care little for the ordinary folk, the poor and the marginalised.
The people won't stand for it, forever.
viking68
Politicians only care about two things, getting elected and money to get elected.
Money comes from those in power, and people in power elect politicians who will increase that power.
It is a viscous cycle, and the individual voters are only going to be pandered to.
Trump is a new animal in this mix. He's the new king, and he will use that throne to increase his personal power while pandering to voters. Since his hold on the office is not strong, he is using every tactic available to a king.
bass4funk
Here we go....
If Trump didn't care, he would have never won the EC, he doesn't need this life, he had a great life before he became President, in fact, this is more stressful, so of course he cares. He has been talking and thinking like this since I have been following him around 1988 so I am not in the least surprised.
If they want to make a deal they will.
So now he wears a crown? Don't remember any coronation.....
He is strong, very and he has the Senate, so even if the Misguided Dems get the House, guess what, he will be around, get used to it.
Jonorth
Trump did him a favor by showing up? By living up to his responsibilities as a president, engaging in diplomacy with a group his country is politically engaged with? If Trump and his allies really don't think they can gain and contribute in this group, that his mere presence is a gift, then maybe they should leave it and be America Alone.
Jimizo
Were those the ideas that led you to dismiss him as the leader of a lunatic fringe? The days when you were pro TPP?
Can you post links to the many episodes when Trudeau snubbed Trump? I can’t find any.

In this particular instance, yes. He kinda had somewhere else he needed to be. To do things no one else in the G7 can do. You didnt see Kim asking to meet Trudeau or Merkel or Macron did you?

Just a thought on the socks: the last GOP president with a semblance of sanity was George HW Bush, who has adopted a habit of wearing exotic socks in his latter years. Trudeau is likely sending a message with these.

Whatever happens on the federal front, the number one trading partner on the state level along the border is Canada and I fully expect that those states and our provinces will want that to continue. It might have to go to the state level though to maintain it

He was late, then left early, then had a tantrum insulting his host, while tweeting from the washroom on AFO
World leader indeed
Also the cacophony of insults from US government officials lying about Trudeau at the command of their boss was beyond the pale and not lost on anyone. It has caused Canadian Conservative critics and Liberal government officials to reply with common incredulity; no small feat. Trump is making sure NAFTA is dead and the tariffs be permanent.
They choose Trudeau as their foil, but he hasn't responded to the bait and not replied. This has created heightened amity with other world leaders fresh from the experience who were just there or are still in Canada. Hopefully this will speed up the timeline for our recent trade agreements to commence sooner.
