Ridiculous headline for this article. This policy of the Coalition Party is not harsh at all, unless you are a Green and who would open the borders to anyone and everyone and not know how that could possibly be paid for. The majority of the 50,000 people that have entered into Australia over the last few years are in fact economic refugees - that is people who arrive wearing designer jeans and tops and throw away their passports and expect to become citizens and become eligible for social security payments and then send for their family members to do the same.

These illegal and illegitimate arrivals prevent genuine asylum seekers - those who are genuinely in need of assistance and who are fleeing persecution and violence - from obtaining citizenship. The Progressive Party who will soon be annihilated in the coming election created this whole mess in the first place, and their solution - an attempt to fix up the mess they have caused in the first place - is flawed just like the rest of their policies.

Refugees are a major election issue in Australia, even though they come in relatively small numbers by global standards, accounting for just three percent of the world’s total asylum applications in 2012, according to the UNHCR.

and there you have it.... this paragraph sums it all up - it is simply an issue raised by both the major parties to keep the fear cranked up and show they are 'tough' on this issue.....if they both spent as much effort on the economy and the real issues facing Australia everyone would be better off....

Like Australia, Japan has signed UNHCR. However processing refugee application in Japan is very strict unlike Australia. Even Australia is many times larger and richer in natural resources, it is not the national interest for accepting countless asylum seekers from all over the world. If the success rate is so high, Australia will face the unstoppable human wave. If one boat was successful, there will be thousands of boats will come.

The definition of the refugee is complex and delicate. When 2,545 foreigners applied for refugee status in Japan in 2012. Only 18 were recognized as genuine refugee.

Most people from boats lied as refugee for taking advantage of Oz social welfare system. It is doubtful that majority of these settlers will survive by themselves without the burden for mainstream Australians. The problem of Australia was genuine refugee were kicked out by the queue jumpers of economic migrants.

Rubbish. This is a major talking issue. And whist you might be unaware, the Progressives have been in power for 6 years with the aid of the far-left wacko's called the Greens along with a few independents who couldn't run a brothel, who the Progressives agreed to be in alliance with. They will all disappear in a few weeks and the Conservatives will gain power. And they will run the country like a business and get it back into the black

We have been aware that UNHCR rule has been misused for real asylum seekers. I am glad Abbott is standing tall for a common sense solution.

As a matter of fact, I may know two of them; one from S. Korea and the other from China who are both looking for a better welfare system (voters tax money) in Australia. Probably their own countries will not miss them at all as they are not willing to contribute anything to society, period.

“This is our country and we determine who comes here,” Abbott told reporters, deliberately harking back to the ruthless stance of veteran Liberal-National coalition leader John Howard.

Australia, a great country, a great continent. Does Abbott know, remember how it was populated by the western intruders? Sure it is a sovereign nation now and he and the likes determine who come. Treating the boat people like the early foreign settlers, the convicts (yeah, I know times have changed - and people too) won't earn an Abbott admin much sympathy. Island countries seem to have problems with settlers from elsewhere - but wait, where did the 'original' settlers and with what rights, come from?

The power of numbers and percentages. Yes, Australia only gets 3% of the number of asylum applications but Australia only has 0.03% of the world's population (23 million people out of 7 billion people) so you could easily argue that the 3% number is actually overwhelming for Australia. Yes, it's a big place but most of it is desert.

These people could claim asylum in any country on the way to Australia. But they don't. Then we have reports of male refugees raping in the PNG camp. That's perfect citizen material.

Anyway, the Australian Prime Minister has said that no more boatpeople will be allowed to resettle in Australia.

The problem is asylum seekers arrived by illegal boats cost Australian tax payer's money over $ 10 Billions in 5 years under Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard Labor Government. The $ 10 billions + costs are for 50,000 asylum seekers and still rising. I think that kind of money should be directly aiding to refugees in Camps. 10 billions dollars is a lot of money and UNHCR can look after millions of refugees in camps around the Africa. Asylum seekers arrived in Christmas Island is not coming from refugee camps and they fly direct to Indonesia from their country airport and then they sail to Christmas Island by boat organized by human trafficker. Over 1000 children, women and men were drowned between 2008 and 2013. They are not actually refugees but in fact majority of asylum seekers are economic refugees. I don't know whether Coalition policy is right or wrong but majority Australian peoples are tiring of asylum seekers arrived by boat. Labor Government has released tens of thousands of asylum seekers into community without noticing community. Some asylum seekers were committing rape and sexual assault. Asylum seekers problem is out of control under Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard labor Government. So I’m not surprise majority of Australians are supporting for tougher policy on asylum seekers.

Yes, this is very true. Indonesia is a hub station for refugees from all over the world. Many of them are Muslims from the Middle East.
