Nanda? What a load of rubbish. Allah? Santa. People should respect each other because it is the right thing to do.

not sure why acid attacks ppear to be more common in Islamic countries.

Sickening. I hope these young women make a full recovery. I'd hazard a guess that some neanderthal found their presence or appearance 'offensive' in some way.

" Tourism is the main foreign currency earner for Zanzibar"

Maybe not for long.

SuperLib, how can that possibly justify this sick and twisted attack on well-meaning and respectful women in any culture or clime, in any way or form???

Tommytoke, I am not expecting you to believe in the existence of Allah or God. I was addressing those who believe fervently that they are doing this in the service of Allah.

On another note, is this merely an economic problem for Zanzibar? No moral outrage at all?

Quoting the Zanzibar Minister for Information and Tourism, Ali Mbarouk: "I beg our nationals in any way this is not something they should be doing because tourism is the strong pillar of our economy so if we do such acts we are killing our economy and our livelihoods in general so it is not an honourable thing to do it's a bad thing and it's supposed to be condemned by all citizens of Zanzibar."

Huh?

The intent of an acid attack is not necessarily to kill the victim but instead to blind, cripple and disfigure. It is a crime that is almost always about punishment and vengeance and the effects can last a lifetime.

An acid attack is like rape, it can happen to anyone, but worldwide the majority of victims are female and the majority of perpetrators are male. It is, for the most part, a crime against women and is rooted in gender inequality and discrimination. When looking for a correlation between this type of crime and a culture, look at the way they treat their women overall, you are almost certain to find some clues there.

Remove religion from the equation and I'd like to see just how many of these attacks would occur. It would be really interesting to see if there had been no religion on this planet for last last 4000 years if we would have seen as many wars, "acts of terrorism" and deaths...

nanda,

I would venture that SuperLib's comments were supposed to be tongue in cheek. As to the article, although the motive has not been made known, this is another case that certainly still does not help the image of tourism in Muslim countries, especially for female tourists. This seems to be supported by the fact that the minister for information has to come out and explain that throwing acid on people is a bad thing.

slumdog, you could well be right about SuperLib's comment.

Sadly though, many people really believe stuff like that and actually use it for justification of unthinkable cruelty. Shades of the Boston bombers.

Yes, I found the Minister's comment an eye-opener, but one we need to be aware of.

I think SuperLib was trying to score a cheap point over those who oppose the Iraq invasion. Give him credit for trying. Any port in a storm.

These attacks take place everywhere on this planet, please stop relating everything with Islamic countries, yes I would have agreed if you relate suicide bombing with Islamic countries!! (Am not a muslim but Islam is a good religion in hand of few bad muslims)

nandakandamanda No question in my mind as to who did this.

Such actions spit in the face of Allah.

How can you be so sure that culprits are muslim??? Could you read a muslim cleric was attacked by acid too!!! Zanzibar has one of the worst episodes of slavery!! What if it was a racial attack against white community, or just for some personal reason!! Or may be politically motivated to hurt tourism....

The girls were not tourists but living on the same island, we should wait for outcome before making harsh comment on a religion or country or community!!

Whaaaaaa, that's messed up.

I hope they one day learn how to pray sincerely from their hearts and spend the rest of their lives respecting God's creation.

(Anyone planning to go to Zanzibar should read the book by Giles Foden.)

Iraq? The article is about an attack in Zanzibar. People don't just decide to become terrorists, it it always the result by actions of the West. If two Brits were attacked, then obviously it's because of British foreign policy.

The UK should review their foreign policy. It might have something to do with this.
