Headline is very misleading. Nobody is talking about closing Gitmo, they're talking about closing the detention facility at Gitmo. Gitmo, the navy base, is gonna be a U.S. Base for a long, long time. Also, most of these detainees aren't going to be set free, their own countries won't even take them back. So they are thinking about transferring them to other facilities (i.e. Levenworth, Pendelton and Charlston). So you are moving people, the vast majority of whom are from very hot climates, from a warm, pleasant climate to a places that have cold winters which means much, much more maintainence costs. And, even Obama says it's going to be a challenge and take time. So I think the executive order is thowing the liberals a bone and then this whole Gitmo thing is going to the back burner.

"many nations have resisted Bush administration efforts to repatriate the prisoners"

Heck, they sure don't want those scumbags back.

They don't want the illegal aliens back, so why would they want these fanatics back. This could have all been avoided if they had executed them on the battlefield rather than thinking they would be useful intelligence assets.

sarge: maybe Obama heard all your sarcastic cries for quick closure and so now he's issuing the orders to get it done a little more quickly.

Anyway, as he said, bush and co. have violated human rights by creating and maintaining the place.

All Obama really needs to do is close the detention facility and have these guys pushed out of the back of an airplane on their way somewhere else. It's not like those complaining really give a crap about the detainees. It's all about being seen to protest "Gitmo."

No, keep it open! We need a place to put the Bush administration in.

Only 6 days and 14 hours left of george bush's presidency.

Just go away after your term is over. We've had enough of his lies, excuses and conspiracies against Americans.

Just go. < :-)

I always did find it odd that some nations would criticize the US for having Gitmo, then turn around and say that they refuse to take the prisoners who were cleared for release....thereby making them stay at Gitmo.

"maybe Obama heard all your sarcastic cries for quick closur and so now he's issuing the orders to get it done"

It'll be six more days, Smith, before Obama can issue any orders.

It will be nice to finally have someone else to blame for this eh? Oh wait, he'll be black and a Democrat, of course he won't be to blame for anything. After all, he is the SAVIOR of the world!

What about the rent? What about the landlord - Cuba that's you - what is he doing allowing his tenent to do stuff like this on his property? There's enough blame to go around here Castro. DO you folks know thta Gitmo rent to Cuba is still a buck fifty since Teddy's Rough Riders?

It’s unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon.

Please note they are talking about the detention facility at the Navy base, NOT the Navy base itself. That thorn is going to stay in the Castro brothers side for a long time.
