Afghan clerics demand public trial for Koran burners

Please inform them that we're not willing to cow down to Islamic persecution because a book was burned. They failed to pass their "blasphemy laws" at the UN so they only passed it amongst themselves along with that tripe of Islamic human rights... What they're asking for is the LEGAL right (self indulgence from the acknowledgement of other nations) to persecute people over religious differences (which they've already done even before the qur'an burning).

It doesn't matter to them, as far as they're concerned you can't be of any other religion but Islam or else you'll be persecuted, you can't criticise Islam or else you'll be persecuted, leave Islam because you'll be persecuted. Anyone figure out the pattern here?

So some books were burned... people are going to attach THAT much meaning to them that they'll go extra crazy and start killing people? Islam in its pure form, I'm sure, is a wonderful religion for those who have a particular affinity for it, and who practice it rightly. But if love and basic goodness isn't at the core, than what kind of religion is it? it becomes something else and loses its own sacredness.

While I strongly disagree with posters who suggest buring the Koran is no big deal or does not warrant an apology, what these people want -- a public trial -- is ludicrous. They dont want atrial`, per se, they want to further the witch hunt and simply find the people guilty, then give them a ridiculous punishment. Surely if they were given a public trial and somehow found innocent the people in an uproar here would not be satisfied, right?

I think it is not the physical book itself, but the real ideas within the pages that should be of concern. The thoughts within the pages seem to be bent based on the people that use it as a war document rather than one of peace. I have not read it, so I cannot judge it myself, so maybe it is time to do so.

Very true. Obama's disinterested, half-arse effort at accomplishing something in Afghanistan has been another misguided attempt to win an unwinnable war. He should've moved to get the U.S. out by now.

But if we want to get into the subject of who should be on trial, let's start with Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, and not the junior enlisted people just following orders the other day.

The previous administration didn't do what was necessary to get Osama Bin Laden and other top people a decade ago, and then embarked on a large-scale, long-term ground war and a wasteful attempt at nation building.

Let's hold them accountable for the thousands of dead on all sides and the tens of thousands more ruined mentally and/or physically.

If you're going to go down that rabbit hole, then what about the Senators and Congressman who approved the war spending every year? Don't forget that Congress does have the power of the purse and thus could have ended the wars anytime it wanted.
