Kept in darkness, the population is easier to manipulate.

This is unbelievable to see that in the 21 century.

The article does not make a clear distinction between education for all and segregated separate education for girls.

Buried in this quote from the article: "Access to education can be undermined by a number of factors, ranging from a limited number of qualified teachers and community opposition to a lack of a toilet and other sanitary facilities." are the words "community opposition".

Democracy cannot work if the forces of ignorance and fear in the community are manipulated and encouraged, where it is publically declared fashionable to be old-fashioned.

And not just confined to Afghanistan.

are the words "community opposition".

Indeed, community opposition means that the locals want to teach their own kids at home, just like they've been doing for thousands of years.

Who's gonna teach them? Fathers are out working, while their mothers didn't go to school neither

That's like the uneducated teaching the uneducated

If all they could teach girls is how to be a woman at home like they've been teaching them for thousands of years, then that's all they're ever gonna be - a woman at home

Sounds like Cali. But seriously, this is just horrible that something like this can happen in the 21st century. Sad to say, but I just don’t see that country letting up anytime soon.

You can't drag people kicking and screaming out of the 8th century if they don't want to go. They are best left to wallow in their ignorance. It sounds harsh, but there isn't any other option. Help those that want help, and leave the rest to their poverty.
