Welcome to the club! My daughter graduated from university last year and lives in Southern California. Rents are astronomic, and she doesn't have any "help from an organization that will fund a portion of the monthly rent until next year." So they already have advantages that others do not.

If you want affordable housing, you don't live in California.
Move to Mississippi. There are apartments there for $500/month and homes for $80K.
The US isn't just the east coast or the west cost. The palm tree and ocean dreams shown on TV/movies isn't what most of the US is like. Each part has different traits.
I live on the edge of mountains, in the southern US. It is quite beautiful and the climate here isn't nearly as hot as places just 50KMs farther south. I've lived in 9 states and 12 cities. I've traveled to almost all the states at this point and spent time in most of those. They each have great things and each have negative things.
I have relatives in California. They are constantly complaining about things that are easily fixed - by moving to a different state.
We don't always get our dreams. Sometimes we only get what we truly need.
Another hint - don't buy your kids cell phones if you are having financial trouble.
