"The families were told that the money came from President Barack Obama"

They should have been told the truth. The money came from U.S. taxpayers.

Army Staff Sgt Robert Bales is accused of sneaking off his base on March 11, then creeping into houses in two nearby villages and opening fire on families as they slept.

Without any hesitation or remorse.

What do they mean by unusually large payouts. Do they mean that officially an Afghan life is actually supposed to be worth less than $50,000/. WOW

5 ( +8 / -3 )

And a couple of hundred dollars if its a sanctioned kill. God, what has humanity come down to.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Isn't it wonderful to know that we can put a price on human lives? Also interesting to keep in mind that a US Marine is probably worth more than $250,000 when you count equipment, training, lodging, food etc.

When are they going to ask the Taliban for money for all the people it has killed?

Wakarimasen: "When are they going to ask the Taliban for money for all the people it has killed?"

You mean the families of the people killed by this insane American? Or wait... are you just deflecting?

i agree with 'Serrano' though most have disagreed with him.

And without looking at him sideways!

If he can sneak off the base, cannot others sneak on?

That is MAJOR pile of cash for those families, given that the average annual income is about a buck seventy-five. It's a pity that it will probably be stolen by the local Taliban/Imam/Thug in charge about 4 minutes after they receive it.

$50,000 for the life of an innocent afghan and the americans call it an unusually large amount, damn cheek of these a holes. The afghan people should turn it down and sue the U.S. govt for millions for each death.

How much would they normally pay out, 50 cents to innocent victims that get slaughtered by it's out of control nut jobs wearing its uniform?

How much would be paid out in an american court in a wrongful death case? Millions ! Or a court case against tobacco companies years ago?

Really goes to show the arrogance of this establishment doesnt it.

An afghan life is worth only $50,000.

It's called "Blood Money" and it's a common practice in Islam. And also been done in Japan (mimaikin). Look it up on Wiki. Lucie Blackman's father accepted 450,000 pounds after his daughter was murdered in 2000 by Joji Obara.

'ExportExpert' I guess you didnt go through the whole article. $50,000/ was a lot...

"However, civilian death compensations are occasionally made public. In 2010, U.S. troops in Helmand province said they paid $1,500 to $2,000 if a civilian was killed in a military operation and $600 to $1,500 for a serious injury. The Panjwai shootings are different because they were not part of a sanctioned operation, but it is a distinction lost on many Afghans who see any civilian deaths as criminal."

And these are about deaths they get caught responsible for. Usually its the other persons fault that he happened to be alive in his country.

Bates should be turned over to Afghani authorities for justice. Bribery won't solve it.

I believe they were saying it was high for this type of settlement, not high for an Afghan life.

Doesnt matter it is still disgraceful and the fact they usually only pay $1,200 makes it no better, they should be ashamed of themselves, how much would they put on an american life?

$10,000 was offered to get that guy zimmerman alive, the guy who shot that 17 year old black kid recently, compare that to this rubbish and what does that tell you.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Oh well, at least they got something. NATO doesn't pay as much. Taliban and Iraqi insurgents, nothing at all.

John, you are showing a bit of impressive cultural ignorance. Offering money like this is the accepted cultural practice in Afghanistan, especially because people cant trust what passes for a justice system there. Payments are the way to keep the peace when things like this happen. It's been that way for centuries

. I'm impressed that the Americans are so culturally sensitive!

I'd like to see the Afghans pay the families of the almost 1,800 U.S. soldiers who have died in Afghanistan $50,000.

On a side note: two-thirds of all U.S. deaths in Afghanistan have come since Obama's surge.

yabits: "Without any hesitation or remorse"

You read minds, do you, yabits?

smith: "And without looking at him sideways"

Weird...

As disgusting as this is, its very true that Islam does condone "blood payment" for loss of life. 2 things should happen, and sadly the first is that the relatives of those killed should REFUSE the money. Are they going to turn it down, because they will be judged by the rest of humanity for their hearts. We'll see how that part plays out, once the "payment" is refused, then turn Bates over to the afghan "justice" system. Welcome to the wonderful world of corruption in Afghanistan.

Now if the money is not refused, then the US will still look bad for cover-ups, shady business and more. Thanks guys, looks like we're working for another revolution starting with kicking folks out of D.C.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

who cares where the money came from. the 50k per head is ridiculous. americans owe 110k per head so they should be killed twice?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Side point....but is anyone else surprised that burning Korans brought about 30 deaths from protests and we've seen nothing like that so far?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ExportExpert: Really goes to show the arrogance of this establishment doesnt it.

You sound pretty devastated.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Superlib, not to mention only 6 of those were US soldiers, the majority of those killed of the 30 were Afghans. The Taliban have been killing a lot of people as well but most Afghans are too scared to even ask for the "blood payment" for the death of innocent civilians caused by those groups. Like I said, welcome to the corruption of Afghanistan.

the $50k was offered by u.s. govt. the $10k you are referring to was offered by a private group. big difference.
