Moral of the story: Always carry nets and bottles and funnels in your emergency locker. Collect rainwater and urine and mix as appropriate.

After the tragedy of the NZ mine disaster, some good news of people surviving as if by miracle. Fifty days adrift at sea beggars belief. I now have an old Far Side cartoon in my head, though. The one with the two men, the dog, and the short straw...
Survival note: When there is no fresh water, both seawater and urine can be absorbed by the body through rectal tissue.

It is truely amazing that they lasted for so long; a tremendous story of survival. It must have been a terrifying experience with seemingly no hope of ever being found.

Wow. 50 days adrift. That just staggers the mind. I'm glad they made it back alive.

Nice to see a tiny smidge of good news amidst all the bad. Amazing, these three teens. I hope they get a bit of a holiday in Fiji once they recover -- with the family flown over to be with them, of course. Wow... and a tip of the hat to the seagull that landed on their boat.

Wow! This is the kind of story I wish a saw more of. Congrats to the kids for making it through this ordeal. I'd say this counts as a definite second chance at life. Hope they all go on to do great things with this new opportunity.

Tough and resourceful teenagers! Great for them. Imagine catching a wild seagul.

Hope they see, that their survival was a gift. Now boys, go out, fall in love, have a wife, have children and do the best of your life.

Nessie, that is a very good bit of information and makes sense. Thanks.

I've read that it's okay to drink if you mix it with freshwater up to about 2 parts fresh water to 1 part seawater. This was famously tested during the Kon Tiki expedition.

I bet you these kids wont be trying to row from one island to another for a very long time if they have any sense or brains, to keep them out of trouble.
