Democrats urge supporters to 'fight,' too

Another example of right wing whataboutism.

“witch hunt"

Once again a term from the alt right glossary intended for Trump's base to parrot. Because so many are unable to understand and unwilling to try to understand the complexity of what's actually happening.

We were invited here,” said one Capitol invader. “Trump sent us,”

Words have consequences. Trump's the poorest communicator the White House has ever seen. But as a lifelong huckster hawking dreck to mass markets he knows full well how to reach and rile his base.

Democrats also pushed the false "Russian collusion" narrative for years, which undermined the integrity of the election and the nations institutions.

It was a divisive misinformation campaign designed to sow doubt and confusion.

-16 ( +15 / -31 )

Their presentation included a blizzard of their own selectively edited fiery comments from Democrats.

Sure. Trump’s team selectively edits, while the dems are all angles. I get it.

-15 ( +8 / -23 )

The prosecutors described in stark, personal terms the horror they faced that day and showed the many public and explicit instructions Trump gave his supporters

the other day.

Their presentation included a blizzard of their own selectively edited fiery comments from Democrats.

Nice to see impartial and fair reporting.

-14 ( +7 / -21 )

What a nonsense. We all know the intentions of Trump was to over throw the election and discussed using the military to help achieve it. Why did he even hold a rally on Jan 6, sore loser.

8 ( +18 / -10 )

If Trump says go march peacefully then that is a call for attack..

But if Biden says go and fight then that means do things very very peacefully ..

Ha ha ha ..

This is called Banana republic .

I am not talking about China or North Korea .. our OWN USA...

-14 ( +9 / -23 )

Rebels without a clue went to D.C. to right a wrong that never happened, led there by someone who lied to them, used them, and hung them out to dry, and most Senate Republicans have done the same. The Republicans in the Senate, 80% of them anyway, are aware of the lies Trump told, and betrayed their country and sense of integrity anyway, because integrity and honest service is less important to them than power and safety. It will take a while to find that the ship they have boarded doesn't sail to a destination they will be happy with.

10 ( +15 / -5 )

The one thing I am really loving about this is, and it was made extremely clear in the opening arguments of the defense, if he is acquitted it means accepting that he lost the election. The only way to continue the falsehood of the election being fraudulent and stolen is to find him guilty.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

The only thing trump cared about was his damaged ego when he lost bigly and the impending criminal law suits breathing down his neck. He didn't give a damn about the presidency and his last days in office proved it by him playing golf most of the time; all this while the number of deaths and infections kept soaring. He used the big lie to milk his ignorant supporters of donation money which went into his own coffers. With all the money he swindled from his followers you'd think he would have been able to hire a competent defense team, but nope. He got the farm team because his first string all quit on him. And yet his followers and enablers are sticking to this lie and to their god figure. The spineless senators probably will not convict him but trump will get them in the end. There is no reciprocity for blind loyalty to the orange man, just look at all those he's betrayed.

donald’s team trying to outdo donald in lying!!!!

Fat chance this bunch will get paid!!!!

6 ( +11 / -5 )

donald knew that his puppy pence was being evacuated.

But like the psychopath he is, he still wanted to be cruel to his pet.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

@nonparty

But Trump told them to "fight like hell" or they wouldn't have a country. Sounds peaceful.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Loved Bernie’s question, van dear Veen went into a meltdown!!!!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

It’s nice of them to do all this lawyerin’ pro Bono. They know their chances of getting paid are slim to none. Maybe that’s why they’re making such a mess of it.

Did you watch Castor? Awesome. Get him on again.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Democrats also pushed the false "Russian collusion" narrative for years, which undermined the integrity of the election and the nations institutions.

It was a divisive misinformation campaign designed to sow doubt and confusion.

They sure did

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

Anyone who denies that donald is Putin’s puppy is living in an alternate reality.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Can we just skip to the part where the GOP solidifies Trump and his supporters as the face of the party?

7 ( +10 / -3 )

What a nonsense. We all know the intentions of Trump was to over throw the election and discussed using the military to help achieve it. Why did he even hold a rally on Jan 6, sore loser.

As I recall the Dems tried that with the phony Russian delusion collusion, the first impeachment hoax, the failed 14th amendment, and now the 2nd impeachment farce, so yeah, they have been trying for 4 years to overthrow Trump.

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

The good old conservative defense of, “they do it too!” It’s a variant of, “they did it first!”

Sophomoric.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

There’s a difference in launching a legal investigation and calling on a bunch of bigots to go on a murderous rampage.

Not a surprise donald’s idiots don’t know the difference.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

As I recall the Dems tried that with the phony Russian delusion collusion, the first impeachment hoax,

Legitimate uses of power that did not involve force or violence, which mean you are pushing the logical fallacy of a false equivalency.

the failed 14th amendment,

Equal protection under the law is alive and well, so I’m not sure what you’re on about.

and now the 2nd impeachment farce, so yeah, they have been trying for 4 years to overthrow Trump.

There is a huge difference between legitimate exercises of power to remove someone from office and encouraging a violent mob to disrupt the certification of the electoral college. There’s that logical fallacy again.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

As I recall the Dems tried that with the phony Russian delusion collusion, the first impeachment hoax, the failed 14th amendment, and now the 2nd impeachment farce, so yeah, they have been trying for 4 years to overthrow Trump.

There were no impeachment hoaxes. He has been impeached, twice. You have some trouble recognizing the difference between impeachment and impeachment trial. Impeachment already happened. Twice.

And they did overthrow the ex president. That has also already happened. He lost the election and now Biden is the president.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Can we just skip to the part where the GOP solidifies Trump and his supporters as the face of the party?

That's already been established. It's clear the Republican Party is the party of Trump, that the Republicans have made room in their 'big tent' for the Qanon, Oath Keeper, Proud Boys among others of the dozens of white nationalist, anti-American, anti-democracy, far right extremists. The battle for the republic is underway. Look at posters on this site who use Trump's 'Patriot Party' flag, one where a bunch of bananas replace the 50 stars to represent Maga-stan, one nation under their Trump.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

The good old conservative defense of, “they do it too!” It’s a variant of, “they did it first!”

Oh, don't give a pass, keep the eye on consistency.

There’s a difference in launching a legal investigation and calling on a bunch of bigots to go on a murderous rampage.

To the Democrat hypocrisy point of view, that is what they would have you believe, but in actuality, that argument fell flat and that's why they kept failing and with this lastest attempt as well, but watching it does bring good comedy relief.

Not a surprise donald’s idiots don’t know the difference.

Who?

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

donald’s lawyers had another humiliating day, not a surprise that others didn’t want to touch it with a barge pole.

Wouldn’t matter to donald’s idiots though, they wouldn’t understand an argument if it bit them on the nose.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

As I recall the Dems tried that with the phony Russian delusion collusion, the first impeachment hoax, the failed 14th amendment, and now the 2nd impeachment farce, so yeah, they have been trying for 4 years to overthrow Trump.

The American voters won the day by voting Trump out of office and a historical landslide win by Biden. Trump refused to accept the result, probably never will.

Trump was impeached twice, another first in history. Probably again the republicans who fear Trump won't vote to convict him, but not based on evidence.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

I couldn’t agreed more. I just wished immigrants stayed out of domestic politics, don’t you?

You’re unequivocally and unambiguously sauntering precariously approximate a one dimensional segment of separation, upon which you, per happenstance, descend into the logical fallacy of pertaining the fallacious view that immigrants are wooden structural two dimensional surfaces upon which they are to be placed and maneuvered in tandem with the will to power to see your end goal materialize.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Not a surprise donald’s idiots don’t know the difference.

Who?

You.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

Oh, don't give a pass, keep the eye on consistency.

Not giving someone a pass is far different than stopping to the same low as that person. More of your airtight “logic.”

To the Democrat hypocrisy point of view, that is what they would have you believe, but in actuality, that argument fell flat and that's why they kept failing and with this lastest attempt as well, but watching it does bring good comedy relief.

No, rational adults with the slightest intellectual capacity understand the difference between using legal means to remove someone from office and using a mob of barely educated morons.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Trump was impeached twice, another first in history.

Acquitted once and the second one as well.

Probably again the republicans who fear Trump won't vote to convict him, but not based on evidence.

Not just that, they don't have a case and this is not a criminal trial, this is in the words of Turley a snap political and illegal impeachment process on a former President that left office and without any witnesses or cross-examinations and depositions, there is no way the Dems are getting a conviction, none.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Trump is damaged goods with the lowest approval rating of any ex president.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Not giving someone a pass

Oh, yes you are, if not then call out all the liberals that caused so much damage and mayhem last year, be fair and if you want to condemn one radical group, condemn them all.

No, rational adults with the slightest intellectual capacity understand the difference between using legal means to remove someone from office and using a mob of barely educated morons.

Well, it seems the Dems with their so-called smarts seem to never, ever learn and are about to get another disappointment again.

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Trump is damaged goods with the lowest approval rating of any ex president.

Yep. That's why the Dems win despite whether he's convicted or not.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

There’s that logical fallacy again.

Ah ah. But doth thee bequeath the burden of responsibility upon the interloper. Let’s resume with the illogical-ity, the fallacisity of the thing in itself, if you will, of which cognitive dissonance is suspended in relation to a belligerent, albeit, disturbed by a an anti-theoretical disposition in concert with an intuitive nature of a tendency, tangent. The fallacy of fallacy, of and within, coming from within, and ascending into true being, is therefore counteracted and subdued.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

Oh, yes you are, if not then call out all the liberals that caused so much damage and mayhem last year, be fair and if you want to condemn one radical group, condemn them all.

You really don’t get it. The democrats used legal means to exercise their constitutional duty of oversight. Trump tried to use an unruly mob and extralegal means to interfere with the election.

Also, let’s be a bit mature and not cut up people’s posts to take things out of context.

Well, it seems the Dems with their so-called smarts seem to never, ever learn and are about to get another disappointment again.

You love repeating this, almost as if you think it will come true. Try demonstrating some of the sophistication you must have given how rich and successful you claim to be.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

In other words, it is OK for Trump to stage a violent coup attempt, because Democrats do it too.

Uh, no, they didn't, and they don't.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Whatever the vote outcome, Trump is out and down. Soon to become yesterday's stale bread. Just another as been with a loud mouth.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Yep. That's why the Dems win despite whether he's convicted or not.

Yeah, funny how you don't hear Dems gloating about the House and midterms in 2 years.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Yeah, funny how you don't hear Dems gloating about the House and midterms in 2 years.

We can’t hear things that will happen in the future.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Well, I see the usual suspects have clearly learned all their talking points from Fox News and are hammering them like the good little boys they are! Jeanine Pirro would be proud of you. (And the FSB too, of course.)

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Whatever the vote outcome, Trump is out and down.

For now

Soon to become yesterday's stale bread.

Naw, he's already establishing a new base of operations in Florida. With 75 million followers that's a heavy weapon and the Dems, even the GOP knows it.

We can’t hear things that will happen in the future.

But when it comes to an impeachment conviction, you can hear well, right?

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

donald’s future is already bleak, there are a bunch of bankruptcies coming up within the next few months, few more criminal charges , so the impeachment trial is nothing compared to what’s coming.

He’d better save up for getting a better bunch of lawyers, these guys would plead out manslaughter for a parking ticket!!!

Time for donald’s idiots to send him his pocket money!!!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Well, if the Democrats also stormed the Capitol, according to him, then, we have to believe him (sarcasm). Not. Where's his evidence? Did he interview these "Democrats?"

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Well, I see the usual suspects have clearly learned all their talking points from Fox News

You guys always say this. Yet you know more about fox’s talking points than others. Same qanon and all these other sites that you guys are so familiar with and able to spot any trails of their philosophies. Please, tell us more about fox’s talking points. What are the other sites saying today?

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Just because 75 million voters voted for Trump equates that there are no 75 million followers. Many have started to abandon him, like people in the QAnon, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers.

He will never be a president ever again. His history is very tainted. His business is failing and losing millions. Owes $350 million in debts.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

But when it comes to an impeachment conviction, you can hear well, right?

We can hear things that happened in the past, or are happening now.

It’s somewhat endearing how you just have to get the last word in no matter how irrelevant it is to the conversation.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

With 75 million followers that's a heavy weapon

You're right. We saw this weapon used in the insurrection at the capitol.

Trump followers love to crow about how much sway their man has, but when a mob invades the capitol, these people deny that Trump had any sway over that.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Just because 75 million voters voted for Trump equates that there are no 75 million followers.

Uh-huh...lol

Many have started to abandon him,

Seems like many people are leaving Biden already as well, this helps Republicans in the long run

>

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

You're right. We saw this weapon used in the insurrection at the capitol.

me too. I watched all 75 million. I counted myself while watching on tv.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

He will never be a president ever again.

If he is convicted, you are right, but he won't and stop with the predictions, you guys said that in 2015 as well.

His business is failing and losing millions. Owes $350 million in debts.*

Since Trump's new soon to be son in law is a billionaire, his money can do a lot, so that does come in handy.

Trump followers love to crow about how much sway their man has, but when a mob invades the capitol, these people deny that Trump had any sway over that.

Wonder when the Dems will call out the rioters from last year and apologize for not doing anything sooner to help the communities most harmed by these people especially the minority communities.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

“You can't incite what was going to happen,”

Thus ironically confirming and proving Trump's incorrigible incompetence, negligence and ultimate dereliction of duty and violation of his oath of office by his taking no action to head off the riot and disperse the crowd, except there is more: the defense has nothing to offer apart from the usual lame right-wing boilerplate whataboutery, which totally avoids the question, "what about the "Trump change" (by no means "chump change"), i.e., the purported $50,000,000 from the $250,000,000 (?) Trumpscam spent by the 45th to incite his followers in the weeks before January 6 as part of his campaign to "invite" them to the Capitol (it'll be WILD!), "co-incidentally" the exact day and time of the final confirmation of Biden's election. If we just follow this money, we will find plenty of malice aforethought. This sham impeachment trial that the Republican "oath-breakers" have turned into a dog and pony show sends a terrible message to the children of America who will learn from their history books a text-book lesson in hypocrisy and political skulduggery. To teach a more salutary lesson the Dems could rectify the travesty of justice about to be played out in the Senate by giving Trump another "first" by impeaching him for a third time, selecting a mix from Trump's smorgasbord of past high crimes and misdemeanors, thus making him also the first Potus to be impeached after leaving office. But more likely the Dems will use the 14th to bar him from public office and initiate criminal proceedings to put Trump back in his box and firmly nail it down while we watch the GOP implode.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Just because 75 million voters voted for Trump equates that there are no 75 million followers. Many have started to abandon him, like people in the QAnon, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers.

Let's assume that 10% of his moderate GOP supporters have left since the election. That leaves him with 67 million voters. He's left behind.

And Biden is looking professional and in control. Someone the world respects and doesn't mock.

Trump is left like a humiliated joke.

The Trump Qult will probably try to nominate him again, guaranteeing another four years for the Democrats.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

The 75 million followers won’t save him from bankruptcy and criminal prosecution in the coming months.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The lawyer has an interesting balancing act. Any questions relating to watching it all on TV and not calling out the national guard, declaring he won by a landslide with no evidence or why not a single one of his lawyers was willing to declare fraud in court are all "irrelevant" questions. But something a dem house member 99% of the population has never heard of once said. OMG, the horror.

The GOP is filled with greedy opportunists. What Trump did or did not do the day of the insurrection won't come out before the vote. It's going to be yet another must read book complete with wall to wall media tour. Because heaven forbid any of these cowards come forward when the country actually needs them to tell us what happened. Screw that, there's money to be made.

This won't end by the way. Congress has a duty to hold hearing about why the pentagon refused to authorize the DC guard. Why they refused to let Maryland send its guard across the boarder. Were any agencies witholding intelligence from capital police? Did any house members or staff give insurrectionists information ahead of time.

If the GOP truly wants this to go away they would let this stuff coming out now. Have full truth and reconciliation. But it's not going to. Because even when you look bad to dems, moderates and independents there's still plenty of money to be raised by playing victim.

Its political theatre, rule of playground, oh no it wasn’t, oh yes it was, oh no I didn’t, oh yes you did,

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

If he is convicted, you are right, but he won't and stop with the predictions, you guys said that in 2015 as well.

ROFL

Since Trump's new soon to be son in law is a billionaire, his money can do a lot, so that does come in handy.

We all know how good Trump is at scamming other people's money. He's been doing it his entire life.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The 75 million followers won’t save him from bankruptcy and criminal prosecution in the coming months.

But he's down that path before, he'll be fine.

Let's assume that 10% of his moderate GOP supporters have left since the election. That leaves him with 67 million voters. He's left behind.

If that is even the case which still no Republican alive can get, especially now and more than ever most conservatives won't back an establishment Republican.

And Biden is looking professional and in control. Someone the world respects and doesn't mock.

As with most Democrats, the world comes first over the US and all the more reason why Trump had a huge following.

The Trump Qult will probably try to nominate him again, guaranteeing another four years for the Democrats.

At the rate Joe is going, I seriously doubt it, the House is pretty much gone for the Dems, that's why they're worried and for very good reasons.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Naw, he's already establishing a new base of operations in Florida. With 75 million followers that's a heavy weapon and the Dems, even the GOP knows it.

Do you truly believe his number of followers hasn’t fallen over the past 3 months? Do you think it has increased? Oh my...smh.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Do you truly believe his number of followers hasn’t fallen over the past 3 months?

A little, but that's with every politician, but they can also pick up as well, goes both ways.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Wonder when the Dems will call out the rioters from last year and apologize for not doing anything sooner to help the communities most harmed by these people especially the minority communities.

The president already did that. No need to keep repeating the question.

Trump's lawyer confirms that under the precedent to impeach former officials people like Hillary Clinton could be impeached to stop them from running for further office.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

If Trump is using these clowns as his defense team in his upcoming tax and insurance fraud case, and his criminal trial for the Georgia phone call to change the election, then he may as well reserve his cell now...'

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Trump's lawyer confirms that under the precedent to impeach former officials people like Hillary Clinton could be impeached

You can't impeach someone who holds no position. Trump was impeached when he actually was still president. Which proves that Trump's lawyers are as bad at constitutional law as anonymous posters on an internet message board. (Also, republicans tried to "Benghazi" Hillary dozens of times and it all led to absolutely nothing, so you have to wonder what she would be impeached for... Except living rent-free in republicans' heads?).

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The president already did that. No need to keep repeating the question.

Calling out and trying to do something is not really the same thing. Trying to block the President to quell the unrest of unruly rioters and looters is not exactly showing strong faith and leadership in trying to quell the unrest, so it needs to be addressed and can't be overstated.

-10 ( +2 / -12 )

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing. The Dems and Repubs have morphed into the same party set out to just confuse the people.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

At the rate Joe is going, I seriously doubt it, the House is pretty much gone for the Dems,

Watch those predictions, Bass. Your track record is shocking.

Just get this thing over with whatever the decision, consign Trump to the dustbin of history and close the lid, and try to get the GOP back from QAnon and Jewish space lasers to something approaching sanity, hygiene and decency for democracy’s sake.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Trump's lawyer confirms that under the precedent to impeach former officials people like Hillary Clinton could be impeached to stop them from running for further office.

Then he’s an idiot as is anyone who believes this.

Again, one more time for those who don’t understand; impeachment happens during office. Impeachment TRIAL follows the impeachment later.

Its really quite simple.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

These Trump impeachment lawyers make Rudy look like Clarence Darrow. It's hard to imagine someone who shows more bad judgment, stupidity and utter incompetence with lawyers. Michael Cohen, Crazy Rudy, Sidney Powell, Lin Wood, now these impeachment idiots...they all must be Trump U law school grads...

Two things stood out for me yesterday;

Trump knew Pence and his family's safety were in jeopardy - Tuberville told him at 2:14 - yet Trump tweeted out at 2:24 "“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution,” As soon as that tweet went out, the mob started searching and yelling ""Hang Mike Pence"..... Donald betraying his most loyal supporter...

The Capitol Police Union stated in addition to the death of Officer Sicknick, 140 police officers sustained injuries battling the pro-Trump insurrectionists. This from the party that says they support Blue Lives Matter - they sure didn't matter much on Jan 6th...

The current crop of spineless Repubs likely won't convict - but it will put them on record subverting their integrity (again) - and speed up the split of the party - into the GOP and GQP...and irrelevance thereafter...

6 ( +9 / -3 )

It's hard to imagine someone who shows more bad judgment, stupidity and utter incompetence with lawyers.

Competent people know a losing case when they see one and they tend to not want to look like idiots in front of the whole country trying to justify the unjustifiable and excuse the inexcusable. That's why Trump has always been stuck with the worst lawyers money can buy (and that he doesn't even pay in the end).

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Just get this thing over with whatever the decision, consign Trump to the dustbin of history and close the lid, and try to get the GOP back from QAnon and Jewish space lasers to something approaching sanity, hygiene and decency for democracy’s sake.

It’s too late. In the late 00s to mid 10s, the GOP lied about birth certificates to drum up support from Tea Party weirdoes. Then those weirdoes ran for office, then they got elected, and unlike older GOP congresspeople didn’t understand that the Tea Party was a scam to drum up votes - they were true believers. And at that point, unless they wanted to get primaried by another Tea Partier, the older GOP types had to parrot their lines.

Then the Tea Party types pulled the same move, appealing to white supremacists and conspiracy theorists, just trying to rile the base and drum up support. But then they saw actual lunatics get elected. And now they have to parrot pro-fascist propaganda unless they want to be primaried by a Q whackjob.

They cannot break this cycle. The GOP is now the political wing of a large domestic terror cult. The best thing it can do is die.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

I agree, his lawyers aren't that good

Do you realize why?

He can no longer get legit good lawyers because the lawyers know he's toxic to try to defend in his view that he was cheated out of a fair election and being a traitor to democracy and the constitution.

A top lawyer would understand the guilt of Trump is already established, the pig circus of the Republican's doesn't allow for a conviction, so defending Trump is an all loss cause for them.

It's been like that for awhile, actually and Trump's only recourse was Rudy. HIs current lawyers are a rung lower than Rudy. LOL.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

There was a clear sign yesterday that while the current Senate Repubs may still be under the MAGA spell, one Repub isn't...

The only Repub that can match McConnell for cunning and craftiness is Nikki Haley, she went from being a moderate Repub Governor to embracing MAGA world as Trump's UN Ambassador to bolting when the crazy got too much and could damage her...

Yesterday she said of Trump; "We need to acknowledge he let us down," she told Politico magazine in an interview published Friday. "He went down a path he shouldn't have, and we shouldn't have followed him, and we shouldn't have listened to him. And we can't let that ever happen again."

If you want to know which way the political winds are blowing in the Repub party, just look at which direction Nikki Haley is facing. He statement speaks loudly and clearly to where she's calculated the political benefit is WRT MAGAworld...

6 ( +7 / -1 )

It's an aquital for sure, but there is some good that comes out of it.

The spineless, craven, power hungry Republicans have revealed themselves to all.

There is little doubt that they care not for the US, the constitution and the electorate.

45 and his band of standby supporters and Quacks tried to overturn democracy.

The whole world saw peak crazy on Jan 6th.

45 and his cultists hate democracy.

Never forget this.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

You can't impeach someone who holds no position. Trump was impeached when he actually was still president.

So in your view, was the impeachment of William Belknap unconstitutional? He held no position as a civil officer at the time he was impeached.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

So in your view, was the impeachment of William Belknap unconstitutional?

No it wasn't, because he only resigned his post with the sole intent of evading his inevitable impeachment. Which he didn't, since he was impeached on the same day. It was an unprecedented case at the time and it still is today, and using it as an example for anything is completely irrelevant.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

It really doesn't matter why in the end because this is not a political trial, if it were, Trump should be very worried, but this will end in an acquittal and while I agree these people are not that good, in the end, it really doesn't mean anything.

That is correct and the reason he is on the golf course every day.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

That is correct and the reason he is on the golf course every day.

No change there, then.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Lawyers for Donald Trump defended him against impeachment Friday by accusing Democrats of waging a campaign of “hatred” against the former president and manipulating his words in the lead-up to the deadly siege of the U.S. Capitol.

And they are correct. I especially liked the one who listed the long line of media lies about Trump, including the "fine people" hoax.

Their presentation included a blizzard of their own selectively edited fiery comments from Democrats.

Well, if they selectively edited fiery comments from Democrats, they just gave them a bit of their own medicine.

It is amazing that a fiery opinion article like this is published in the "news" section.... but that is media world we live in.

The spineless, craven, power hungry Republicans have revealed themselves to all.

And by doing so could attract even more Qanon, Proud Boy, and other more white nationalists further crowding the Republican 'tent' with America's most violent and anti-democratic, those who want a craven authoritarian like Trump to lead them. And drag the US even lower.

There are many options and ways this could play out.

I hope that people will look to history and learn from past mistakes. Education, context and critical faculties are essential to combat apathy, ignorance and the deliberate spread of misinformation and falsehoods.

Failing that, if the US is to become a rogue state, then maybe it is time to impose sanctions and as a last resort, a global military coalition against the US.

The latter is really unlikely but then again, the last few years have been full of unlikely and it could never happen here scenarios.

In the meantime, dialogue, education and a crackdown on the malicious super-spreaders of conspiracy theories/untruths, who seek to unravel the fabric of democracy, is the way forward.

The president already did that. No need to keep repeating the question.

Calling out and trying to do something is not really the same thing.

Trump called out the National Guard but failed to quell the protests. So you are saying he was weak because he failed.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Trump threw his faithful servant, Pence and his family to the wolves, when his thugs attacked the congress and were calling to hang him. That alone is bad enough without the rest of the sedition.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

No it wasn't, because he only resigned his post with the sole intent of evading his inevitable impeachment. Which he didn't, since he was impeached on the same day.

So according to you it's unconstitutional to impeach a former office holder,... except if you decide the reason for their resignation was to avoid a possible future impeachment, which then occurs on the same day? Where in the constitution can I find this?

It was an unprecedented case at the time and it still is today, and using it as an example for anything is completely irrelevant.

Belknap is one of the leading authorities being used to justify the senate's jurisdiction here. It's hardly irrelevant.

Now Nimrata 'give the guy a break' Randhawa is criticizing the fat guy. Unable to decide which face to show, she's giving Miss Lindsay a run for her money when it comes to flip-flopping. Most of these GOP politicians would stab their own mothers in the back if it meant they get to keep their jobs and the money.

Trump called out the National Guard but failed to quell the protests.

I understand he called for 10,000 national guard troops but was denied that request. Do you have other information?

In the event, I understand there were 3000 Capitol police around the building. Are you claiming they would have been unable to prevent a bunch of unarmed rioters to enter the building? Seriously?

If you look outside the selective media coverage, you find plenty of videos showing how the police stood back, allowing the crowd to enter the building, like here:

trump’s been hiding and stewing for more than a month now. Not long before he comes out and resumes his crimes.

The bankruptcies this time around will be worse because there’s no money coming in, and the my pillow guy will be too poor to do anything!!!

Do you have any link to a video showing how anyone was calling for Pence (or anyone else) to be hanged, or are you just letting your imagination run free?

There was no hoax. Trump called Nazis fine people.

YouTube removed the video because it was against terms. But it was widely seen and broadcast across news media. Also verified by Snopes and several reputable journalists who were there.

Eh, not imagination, at all.

Obviously you didn't bother watching the house managers presentation on the insurrection, as the crowd was chanting 'hang mike pence' and made a makeshift gallows. I realize Trump supporters often have proof and will then somehow believe opposite to proof, but there's plenty of footage of calling for Pence to be hanged.

@willb Do you have any link to a video showing how anyone was calling for Pence (or anyone else) to be hanged, or are you just letting your imagination run free?

In your state's Yandex, I typed in:

"mob yells hang mike pence"

and got many hits, some even to videos. Caveat: I'm well aware Putin's various media use deep, malicious fakes.

A few GOP senators and house members gave the excuse that they don’t read Twitter.

Your ignorance does not excuse donald, it just reveals you to be ignorant!!!!

So according to you it's unconstitutional to impeach a former office holder,... except if you decide the reason

"I" didn't decide the reason. Belknap went to president Grant literally crying and begged him to accept his resignation to escape being impeached. Which Grant did in the morning of the same day Belknap was actually impeached. It's all in the history books. His case is an clear exception and unless you need to absolutely interpret the constitution to the very letter without any form of nuance (which is a policy I wouldn't follow or recommend), it is irrelevant to the current proceedings. The only people who want to use him as an example for anything are doing so in the baddest of faiths. If president Trump had resigned on January 12th to escape a second impeachment that he knew was coming, I would absolutely support said impeachment. That doesn't mean I support impeaching President Bush Jr. today for having shamelessly lied about the war in Irak.

What a totally 3rd grade level Defense! It boggles the mind that most Repub Senators intend to aquit Trump. The Republican party is dead. It has become the party of whackos.

A Trump supporter's view of the world...

Videos of pro-Trump insurrectionists with Trump banners assaulting police officers, yelling "Hang Mike Pence", and destroying property - those aren't real...

Jewish-funded space lasers, Deep State Alien Lizards, and The Kraken - those are all real things...

Is it any wonder Nikki Haley said "I'm out'a here"....

The Dems weak and rushed case was eviscerated by the defense. Their hypocrisy was exposed and the the prosecution presented zero evidence of collusion with the rioters. All hate all the time. Exoneration this weekend.

They weren't allowed to stop the protesters, the Dems saw to that.

So you are saying he was weak because he failed.

No, I was saying if the Democrat leadership didn't block Trump from using the Troops then a lot of the unrest could and would have been thwarted.

Hmmmm.......

3:19 p.m.: McCarthy explains in a phone call to Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Miller has already approved full DCNG mobilization. Miller later releases a statement saying, “Chairman Milley and I just spoke separately with the Vice President and with Speaker Pelosi, Leader McConnell, Senator Schumer and Representative Hoyer about the situation at the U.S. Capitol. We have fully activated the D.C. National Guard to assist federal and local law enforcement as they work to peacefully address the situation.” No mention is made of Trump’s involvement.

If 45 is acquited, however, it will send out a clear message that violent rhetoric is now acceptable.

Not just to the 45ists who continue to use it, without fear or consequence. But perhaps those who oppose the cultists, might fight fiery rhetoric with fiery rhetoric.

Imagine that.

Non-stop, daily violent rhetoric and those who use it will be tolerated.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

"I" didn't decide the reason.

If you didn't create this standard, can you point us to a source which supports your claim that a former civil officer (like Clinton) couldn't be impeached years after leaving office but someone like Belknap could? Where did you hear/read this?

The only people who want to use him as an example for anything are doing so in the baddest of faiths.

Bad faith actors like celebrated Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe? He cites Belknap to support the proposition that former office holders can be impeached (regardless of their motives for resigning).

If president Trump had resigned on January 12th to escape a second impeachment that he knew was coming, I would absolutely support said impeachment. That doesn't mean I support impeaching President Bush Jr.

Needless to say what you or I would or would not support is irrelevant. The only question is whether it's constitutional.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Non-stop, daily violent rhetoric and those who use it will be tolerated.

You've read posts on this site from 'American' 'journalists' and other Trump supporters who've threatened violence, even a second civil war. Not surprising one of the issues they mention is anything that would question their ability to own private arsenals they need to take over the government. The American far right have long been associated with violence. Their Proud Boys and the dozens of other white supremacist organizations brought out of the woodwork by Trump examples.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Any "trial" in which the presiding judge is also a member of the jury, and has also decided the guilt of the defendant BEFORE hearing any testimony, is a farce.

Any "insurrection" where the insurrectionists don't carry guns isn't an insurrection.

I would also like Pukey2 banned and removed from this site for his homophobic slur at 12:16pm. There is no place for that kind of anti LGBTQ language in this discussion.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Yesterday's "fight" video performance was akin to a form of visual and audio torture designed to brain wash the viewers. Trying to find just about anyone who had uttered the word. But in Trump's case, he was serious and meant it in full.

Insurrection is a violent uprising against the government. The Trump thugs were well armed, including explosive devices. The Oath Keepers entered the Capitol in full combat gear.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Zichi, how do you define "well armed" and with "explosive devices"? Picking up a chair and carrying a firecracker? Not gonna topple too many governments like that... Plus, let me assure you that "full combat gear" includes more than cammo pants and a helmet you can buy on e-Bay. Again, no firearms. The rioters didn't kill anyone. The only person killed that day was an unarmed protestor who was shot by the police.

Not to mention, can the uprising be said to be "against the government" when they are openly supporting the legally elected leader of the government?

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Not to mention, can the uprising be said to be "against the government" when they are openly supporting the legally elected leader of the government?

In his attempt at having the legally decided election thrown out. So you agree Trump is responsible for them being there?
