Iran could easily do a fuel swap deal, get the nuclear power they say they want, and drastically improve their standing in the West, the Middle East, and the rest of the world. The only thing they would lose is the option to create a nuclear weapon, which is what they say they have no interest in doing anyway.

But we all know they won't take that route.

What now? Sit by and wait for Ahmedinejad to get his nuclear bomb, of course. And while we are doing that, Western politicians will continue to make fools of themselved by their bombastic and empty talk.

Israeli officials now talk of a three-year window—until 2014—before Iran can make a bomb.

Why is there no mention in this article that Israel did not even join the NPT and secretly built hundreds of nuclear weapons, yet no sanctions. But Iran get lots of sanctions because some people say that they could potentially one day in the future build some, but there is no evidence they are planning to do so.

Something is not right.

My question is:

Has anyone verified the claim that Iran is running out of crude-oil reserves and thus wants a nuclear plants to replace existing ones before those run dry?

Personally I think if Iran wanted a Nuke they could have already gotten one from Islamic countries that got those already.

I think the root of this ongoing diplomatic spat is very simple: hypocrisy. Every major power demanding Iran give up their program to build nuclear weapons has nukes themselves. And the same nations tacitly allow Israel to keep its U.S.-supplied nukes but won't let Iran have the same right. Supporters of this situation are clearly totally cool with the hypocrisy of the situation, and sit pretty embracing a completely hypocritical argument themselves. There will be no clear solution until the hypocrisy ends or some nutjob attacks Iran. But hey, where is the proof Iran has a nuclear weapons program (as opposed to a nuclear energy program)? And no, foreign observers' forecasts, assumptions and white papers aren't hard evidence. Sorry. We need hard evidence otherwise we'll see another Iraq-WMD debacle. And anyone who wants to take me to task on this: hard evidence ONLY, please.

The sad thing is - and we see this every time in debates about Iran - is that Iran's detractors NEVER present any hard evidence. And when they are challenged, they usually start to get upset and testy because deep down they know they do not have a case. At that poinnt, often earlier, there will be some advocating a military strike. But I ask: where's the evidence of Iran's nuke program?? Iraq proved that lack of evidence turns an attack into a debacle. Once is enough. Evidence.

How many wrong statements can you squeeze into a paragraph? Iran signed the NPT and then proceeded to violate it. Iran lied about its nuclear programme, it only came to light when defectors reported it. Israel never signed the NPT so did not violate anything. And difference between Israel, which is a tiny democratic country surrounded by hostile regimes, which has never threatened anybody, and Irans virulent theocracy which has sworn to "wipe out" the "dirty bacteria" Israel should be obvious even to the most casual observer. And no, Israels nukes are not supplied by the US, they are a domestic development.

Have they done it? Any leader can spout off. And to cap off your truly bizarre post, you admit Israel has nukes, while clearly being against Iran getting any. Iran signed the NPT and has since followed its rules, Iran even accepted additional stricter standards. Iran has been hit with harsh sanctions and was not allowed to take advantage of the benefits of the NPT (Other NPT members are required to help fellow members); yet Iran has always followed the basic NPT rules.

Iran announced its new facilities long before it was required to.

Israel never signed the NPT so it is not entitled to any aid from the US according to US law. ALL American aid to Israel is illegal.

And difference between Israel, which is constantly showing great hostility towards its neighbours and allies, and has been wiping Palestine off the map for the past 60+ years, Iran has not attacked anyone in centuries.

At this point one can only conclude that you're a propagandist for Iran and your goal is to spread as much disinformation as possible. My goal is to try to make sure that people who only take a passing interest in the issue don't actually fall for your bullshit.

The only reason Iran announced its secret nuclear enrichment facility buried in the side of a mountain on a military base was because it had been discovered.

May have something to do with them attacking Israel and some of them openly declaring they want to wipe Israel off the map. What do you expect Israel to sit on their hands???

You also have to remember Iran does sponsor a lot of terrorist organisations so maybe that is a good reason for them not to have nukes.
