God willing the Navy SEALs now have all your names and addresses from Bin Laden's little black book and you'll soon be getting that little "midnight double-tap" too!

"Reaction in the Islamic world to bin Laden’s death has been relatively muted compared with the rage that he long inspired, raising questions about his relevance in a region that has been changed by a wave of pro-democracy uprisings."

This is Al-Qaida's worst nightmare: The Islamic world doesn't give a damn about them anymore.

Quote from group statement above: “The soldiers of Islam will continue in groups and united, plotting and planning without getting bored, tired, with determination, without giving up until striking a blow,” the statement.

Sounds like they have some serious catching up to do on those Hollywood action DVDs then...

saying Americans’ “happiness will turn to sadness”

All these guys do is plot ways to kill innocents. Are we to believe they were holding back because they didn't want to be mean, but now they're going to go at it 100%?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And now we can enjoy more and more safety regulations because of this. Who wants to fly any more. This is only good to force more control on innocent people, assuming that anyone can be a terrorist. Thank you very much.

So just because Al-Qaida confirmed UBL death NOW all of a sudden makes it legit or gives real legitimacy to his demise??! As if we needed their blessing or approval. Whether they want to believe it or not or get their information at Fri. prayer is totally irrelevant. While radical Islam is still an ongoing threat, Al Qaida is increasingly becoming less of a factor in the war on terror.

I would think that the bigwigs in Al-Qaida have to be more than a little nervous now. What did OBL have on them at his house? Could it lead the Americans to them?

The decision to send in the SEALs vice a missile strike was a gamble, but I think it's really paying dividends.

Bin Laden was always keen on martyrdom, albeit for people other than himself and his family. Now he has joined the gullible fools who took him at his word. I wouldn't worry too much about Al-Qaida "revenge" attacks: they were always threatening mayhem anyway.

Obama made a courageous decision by sending in personnel and those personnel were the best. Al Qaida members had better stand down or they two will get a double shot of Obama love.

"raising questions about his relevance in a region that has been changed by a wave of pro-democracy uprisings"

Errr, didn't hear any pro-democracy uprisings in the already democratical Pakistan... Closest pro-democracy urprisings are in Syria, more than 5000km away.

All I have seen so far is hundreds of angry Muslims rioting in London, in fornt of the US Embassy.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I have been under the assumption that Al-Qaeda would be after the USA along with all the western worlds.

Hope I am wrong in this one.

"All I have seen so far is hundreds of angry Muslims rioting in London, in fornt of the US Embassy."

And according to wikipedia there are between 1.2 to 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, so things like this don't mean very much.

If Al-Qaida confirmed the killing of Osama bin Laden, does that mean they are working together with the US government now? Why didn't they know that the body of OBL was already buried at sea then? Where is the logic of the story?

I pretty much agree with just about all of the posters on here, regarding this topic thus far.

Especially NuckinFutz comment "God willing the Navy SEALs now have all your names and addresses from Bin Laden's little black book and you'll soon be getting that little "midnight double-tap" too!" LMAO... I love it. The sooner they are gone, the better off the world will be!!

For different perspectives across the Arab World, and views in different Muslim communities on how bin-Laden's death is perceived, try al Jazeera. Stock shots of "angry Muslims in London" aren't going to enlighten anyone. Those that would divide the world into two camps, the "for us" and the "against us" kind of simplistic thinking, are the voices that shout the loudest in a lot of the press. If you want access to a range of thought, try reading/watching more widely.

As far as I heard it, there were dozens of nationalities killed on 9/11. Why is this supposedly all about "Americans" and "Muslims", as some posters seem to be trying to suggest? Is "America" a religion or an ideology now?

as_the_crow_flies,

Good post, you are completely correct. Unfortunately because of 9/11 the US seems to think it has a monopoly on being the brunt of terrorism. Yes they suffered a tragic series of attacks on their soil and have been attacked around the world. But in this we seem to forget the bombings in Britain, the Bali bombings, other bombings aimed at western cultures in Indonesia, the Mumbai attacks. This isnt a US vs Muslims this is a radical group of Muslims vs the west. As you said it wasnt just Americans that died in 9/11 and this seems to be sadly forgotten.

all I can say is hahahahhahaaaa

"Unfortunately because of 9/11 the US seems to think it has a monopoly on being the brunt of terrorism."

Not quite true. There has been talk in the US of bin Laden's death being vengeance for ALL the innocent people worldwide killed by him and his ilk. Maybe that's why not many(not even in Muslim countries) are protesting or shedding tears for him.

All Al-Qaida stands for is death and destruction and they have the gall and in addition are the very essence of stupidity and ignorance in trying to claim the support of God in all this. God does not seem to want to get involved so it is earthlings that will have to do the swatting. I have never seen or heard any evidence of Al-Qaida having built, constructed anything. What is it they are really after and why? And what is it that creates humans so absorbed by hatred and the urge to destroy?

At a first glance, and at the risk of being optimistic; it would seem killing bin Laden has been even more of a success than we could have hoped to imagine.

Not that I kid myself that there aren't any nutters remaining, but cutting the head from the serpent has shown them to be the hotch-potch bunch of stragglers I've always thought them to be, al Qaida just being a franchise to any Islamic crank with a grudge against the West and/or the US.

Anwar al-Awlaki is already being replaced as head of the franchise by the mainstream media. Watch that name as we'll all be hearing a lot more about the new bogey man. The media should act more responsibly in these matters, they don't deserve the publicity, or the push into the lime-light.

And sadly, the latest drone attempt on al-Awlaki just missed.

Osama bin Laden is dead and body laid in the deep blue sea off Saudi Arabia. It is interesting that Saudi Arabia, the country of his birth and source of wealth refused return of his body by the US before the US gave a respectful Islamic burial at sea from one its greatest warships. He was treated as a combatant. The fact that the US soldiers were able to capture his computer hard drives and other vital data means that any sensible al- Qaida actives will choose to disappear into Society and hope they are not captured. As when any charismatic leader dies, the organization collapses. There may be a few stray grenades thrown on the way out the back door but al-Qaida is finished. It never had the support of the 1.2 billion Moslems, just a handful of young hotheads, most of whom are also now dead. The Moslem world is going democratic, so he failed dismally. All he did was bring death and misery and terror to Moslem and non- Moslem alike.

Don't be so quick Bruno. All our governments need to keep selling all the arms they make so much money from, so the idea of a perpetual, un-seen enemy will continue to be propagated through the media.

But I agree in principle.

"they, too" Not "they, two."

I'm sure the terrorists try something yet again. But it's better to stand up to them in any case.

he always wanted other to die for Allah & sacrifice themselves for their Beliefe, BUT the coward was in hiding & didn't Fight. Let them seek a Revenge, We'll DO the SAME thing! US & our Allies will continue Killing Brainless Terrorists. this is bad because theres seems to be NO End in sight. & this "Brainless holy war" will last for years.

Since I'm overseas and don't have cable I was stuck with the live BBC feed on the internet. I watched the first couple of hours and I was amazed that they did not once mention any other attack except for 9/11. It just seemed odd to me, especially with 7/7 and the dozens of other countries where Al Queda has planned attacks or carried out attacks.

But in reality it made sense. The War on Terror has always been billed as "the US's war" with Europe playing the card of an innocent bystander being dragged into it. It got to the point where it was obvious the BBC made a conscious decision not to mention any other country. Hundreds of attacks in dozens of countries doesn't just get "overlooked."

Another interesting take on what all this means, try "Osama bin Laden's death - What the Arab papers say". It has analysis from various countries across the Arab world. Interesting to know what different commentators are saying, in the light of events over the past couple of months.

I forgot to say, try Googling the article headline or visit the Economist dot com.

Especially ironic seeing as bin Laden wasn't even wanted for 9/11, and America has said itself they have no evidence linking him to the attack. No wonder they didn't want a trial...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Can anyone explain the difference between planning deliberate attacks and revenge attacks? At least one participant won't be at the meeting!

“happiness will turn to sadness”

What Al-Qaeda does best!

"Especially ironic seeing as bin Laden wasn't even wanted for 9/11, and America has said itself they have no evidence linking him to the attack. No wonder they didn't want a trial..."

I don't particularly care if they had no evidence linking him to September 11th. There is a lot of bullshit on all sides regarding that day and we'll probably never know the truth.

Incredibly, the shocking events of 9/11 pale into comparison with the carnage incited by Oussama bin Laden and his sick followers, mostly upon fellow muslims to boot.

He got off lightly with a bullet to the head. They even made an attempt to make his disposal correct vis à vis his religion. More than he deserved.

Now America was going after BL for some random crimes he committed somewhere in the world were they? There are thousands of people all over the world who have committed carnage, go after them too. And arrest them and give them a trial. Otherwise the US govt is just as likely to go after you next, come into your house in the middle of the night, shoot some of your family, you'll get no trial and be shot straight in the head.

We got Bin Laden?

Wow. This is really good news.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

oikawa, if ya pull a 'Pearl Harbor' on us, yeah, we'll be lookin' for you, too.

Just keep your hands where we can see 'em, and everything'll be alright.

@oikawa

Now America was going after BL for some random crimes he committed somewhere in the world were they?

He admitted to planning 9/11 in October of 2004 IN A VIDEO to his minions. LEARN TO GOOGLE.

Otherwise the US govt is just as likely to go after you next, come into your house in the middle of the night, shoot some of your family, you'll get no trial and be shot straight in the head.

How do you figure? Are you planning to murder thousands of innocent people too? If so, then I don’t really feel bad for you or your rights.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It's pretty silly to fear the US government sending a SEAL to to your house all because you're not quite sold on the fact that Bin Laden's organization was involved in 9/11. Sounds like two nutty concepts wrapped up into one neat package with the "I love justice" cherry on top for good measure.
